SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE NEWS AND VIEWS

What’s Ahead in Colgan Counseling?

Career Field Trip October has arrived, and our counseling department will be diving into different activities we have planned for our Colgan students. On October 6, counselors will take sophomore and junior students to the 12th Annual Transportation Career Fair for High School Students hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The event, "Transportation: Your Ride to the Future!" will offer students a wide variety of information about careers in transportation-related fields such as engineering, aviation, transit, architecture, technology, construction and the environment. The career fair is for students who are college bound as well as those wanting to enter the workforce immediately following high school. There will be over 75 exhibitors and a variety of activities, hands-on experiences and giveaways for every student. 9th Grade Counseling Curriculum On October 11 and 12, counselors will visit all 9th grade HPE I classes for a Colgan counseling orientation, as well as a presentation on bullying and harassment. Counselors will review the functions of the counseling department and other support resources at Colgan High School. Students will understand graduation requirements and how important their 9th grade year is in building the foundation of their GPA. Additionally, counselors will discuss what bullying and harassment looks like and how students can report it. Students will also view two videos to help them understand potential consequences. The bullying and harassment portion is a district-wide preventative program to help eliminate bullying in PWCS. During the week of October 27, qualified professionals of Colgan’s Counseling staff will present the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Prevention Program to 9th grade students in all HPE I classes. SOS is a universal, school-based depression awareness and suicide prevention program designed for high-school students. In this program, students learn to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others. The goals of the SOS program are to 1) decrease suicide and suicide attempts by increasing student knowledge, 2) encourage personal help-seeking and/or help-seeking on behalf of a friend, 3) reduce the stigma of mental illness and acknowledge the importance of seeking help or treatment. The program includes a video (Friends for Life) which informs students about how to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell). The program emphasizes the importance of contacting a responsible adult whenever students observe signs of depression in themselves or others. Students will receive follow-up counseling upon request. Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Two counselors sponsor Healthy Communities Healthy Youth (HCHY), which is a Search Institute initiative developed to motivate and equip individuals, organizations and leaders to unite for the purposes of nurturing competent, caring and responsible youth. The Students Learning Essential Assets of Development (L.E.A.D.) Team is comprised of students from each high school in Prince William County, focusing on the 40 Developmental Assets®. These assets serve as a framework that is used to energize youth and radically change the traditional problem centered approach to working with youth to a strength based approach. The program focuses on engaging and empowering youth. The students will meet at least once a month as the District Team to communicate and plan for asset building in the schools and in the community. Acedemic Letter Ceremony The Academic Letter Ceremony will be held on Monday October 17 at 7 p.m. in the Colgan Auditorium. Letters are being mailed home to invite eligible students and their families. Academic letter award eligibility is based on 2015-16 final grades. Current 10th and 11th grade students who were enrolled in at least six classes last year, earned a grade point average for the year of at least 3.5 (non-rounded), and earned a grade equivalent to 3.0 or better in each class meet the criteria for Academic letter awards.

Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Creative Writing- Colgan creative writing students were invited to speak at Open Mic on Sunday, September 25 at the 18th annual “FALL for the BOOK” sponsored by George Mason University. Students Jennifer Prue, Zaire Hall-Hamilton, Caroline Vincent, Madison Petty, Isha Hill, Sophia Elhadid-Idi, Saskia Willut, and Samantha Dawkins presented their original poetry at his event. Creative Writing teachers Garrett Carlson and Kitti Pratt arranged this amazing opportunity for our creative writing students to participate and host the event.

Vocal Music: McKenna Stenson- I am extremely excited to announce that 28 students were accepted in to all county and we also have five alternates. I am so proud of every student who auditioned and look forward to helping students prep for district chorus auditions coming up November 7 at Forest Park High School. The following Colgan students were accepted: Tya Robinson, Tessa Ramirez, Katie Huber, Maria Pittella, CJ Monroe, Dean Barton, Benn Lynn,Clay Ward, Jeremy Thomas, Xavier Howard, Jordan Roderick, Adellaie Jung, Julia Worthen, Peyton Weil, Kate Bresnahan, Rosie Hagan, Maddie Burner, Kiki Juma, Jhilian Bremby, Emily Rotramel, Suprove Chowdhury, and Kiara Grove. Alternates are: Tyler Pierson (first alternate), Kayro Mendoza (first alternate), Natalie Basham - (4th alternate), Nicoletta Karamanis - (4th alternate), and Rachel Meltzer - (5th alternate).

The Colgan Choir fall concert is Thursday, October 20 at 7 p.m. in the Colgan Auditorium. Please come out and support our choir students, admission is free!

Orchestra: Ben Bernstein- Five Colgan Orchestra students successfully auditioned into Senior Regional Orchestra. The Senior Regional Orchestra event is an honors orchestra that auditions students from 17 counties and five independent cities in the North Central Virginia region. The event will take place on November 4-5 at Massaponax High School in Fredericksburg, VA. A huge congratulations go to these students: Madelyn Kline – Violin, Ashley Deng – Violin, Kana March – Viola, Katie Huszcza – Cello, and Morgan Blanks – Cello. Congratulations!

The following student also successfully auditioned into Junior Regional Orchestra: Ethan Calangi, Erika Cho, Rachel Ometz on Violin; Millie Prince on Viola; Daniel Aviles and Stephen Martin on Cello; and Milysha Castaneda on Bass. Also Emily DeGroodt placed as a violin alternate. Congratulations to all! The first CFPA concert in Colgan history was held on Wednesday, October 5. The evening chamber concert featured our Orchestra musicians performing in small groups and was held at Jirani coffeehouse in Old Town Manassas. The concert was a unique opportunity for the students to experience chamber music while also getting out into the surrounding community.

Band: Donald Magee- The Pride of Colgan Marching Band will give their debut performance at the Stafford Showcase of bands on October 8. The students have worked very hard and we’re extremely proud of their efforts. Congratulations! The Colgan High School Concert Band and Wind Symphony will present a Fall Concert on October 26 in the Colgan High School concert hall. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Amphitheatre Performances- Colgan’s talent is being showcased during lunch shifts in the beautiful outdoor Amphitheatre. Students are entertained during all lunch shifts while they are able to relax and enjoy the variety of performances by their fellow classmates. Tyler Plazio played acoustic guitar with vocals, Hip Hop dancers Gianna Flores, Vicky Beach, Jalyn Evans, and Amaya Dickens performed and invited students onto the stage to learn their Hip Hop moves, Kiera Grover sang while playing piano, and Nicoletta Karamanis sang and played guitar.

Photography: Lauren Braney- Photography students transformed an unused science room into a Camera Obscura. Students used black trash bags and tape to cover all light sources. A small circular opening was cut into one of the bags covering an exterior window to create an aperture. Students experimented with contrasting sizes of openings examining light on an overcast day and a sunny day and the relationship of the size of the aperture to the contrasting light. A white screen was hung to capture projected images from outside of the building. Examining depth of field, students experimented with the perfect location for the white screen to capture a clear image which is projected upside down. This hands on experience provided a clear understanding of the function of a camera in preparation of creating pinhole cameras.

*Please arrive by 7:15 a.m.* PSAT (Preliminary SAT) Test Information: PSAT scores are useful in determining how you will prep for the SAT or ACT. The AP Potential web-based tool from College Board utilizes PSAT scores to help school administrators find potential AP students from among PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9 takers. The PSAT has two sections: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. You’ll encounter passage-based questions—sometimes accompanied by tables, graphs, and charts—and math problems drawing upon algebra, geometry, and a little trig.

An information presentation on the PSAT is available at: http://tinyurl.com/gwm2ura

The test usually takes about 4 hours to complete. Please bring at least two #2 pencils. You may bring a standard scientific or four-function calculator for the math portion of the test. Home-schooled students are required to present an acceptable photo ID to be admitted to the testing area. Cell phones must remain off during test administration and brakes.

Dear Colgan Families:

On Wednesday, October 19, we will administer the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT/NMSQT at Charles J. Colgan, Sr. High School through first period homeroom classes. The PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT/NMSQT provides a practice test similar to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) used for college admission. The PSAT 8/9 will be administered to ninth grade students and establishes a baseline measurement of college and career readiness as students enter high school. In a grade appropriate format, the PSAT 8/9 gives students a chance to preview the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and connect to AP courses. It will help students and teachers indicate academic areas students should focus on most in preparation for college.

The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered to all tenth and eleventh grade students. Students will receive scores in the areas of critical reading, mathematics, and writing. They will see how their scores compare with those of other students across the country. Juniors taking the test are entered into scholarship competitions sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The tests will be provided free of charge this year.

The College Board and Khan Academy® have partnered to make practicing easy and personal. Through Khan Academy students can access thousands of questions approved by the College Board, take four official SAT practice tests, and create personalized study plans based on results. Taking an SAT practice test is beneficial for the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT/NMSQT because the measurements identify the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for the different grade levels.

Right to Special Programs/Services This notice is intended to inform the community of a student’s right to a free, appropriate public education and the availability of programs and services, including a special education. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) are federal laws that give the School Division certain responsibilities with respect to providing such educational programs to students with disabilities. Under the IDEA and Section 504, the School Division has the responsibility to actively and continuously identify, locate, and evaluate those children, infant to age 21, living in Prince William County who may be in need of special education and/or related services, or adaptations or accommodations to regular education services. These laws also require the School Division to:

• Refer for possible evaluation any student of school age living in the School Division who a school staff member suspects may be disabled.

• Provide appropriate educational and school‐related opportunities to students with disabilities in an inclusive setting to the maximum extent appropriate.

• Provide notice of the availability of services and types and location of services to nearby private schools, pediatricians, and the Health Department.

• Provide parents/guardians of students with disabilities with notice of their rights annually, and prior to their student’s evaluation and placement, or any significant change in their student’s placement.

• Develop and implement procedural safeguards with respect to actions regarding the identification, evaluation, and placement of students with disabilities.

• Provide procedures for the reporting, investigation, and resolution of student complaints of discrimination or harassment based upon disability, which were revised by the School Division in April of 2016 and are contained in Regulation 738-1, “Complaint Procedures for Student Claims of Discrimination or Harassment.”

• Provide written notice of the School Division’s procedural safeguards to parents or guardians.

If you suspect that your student may have a disability affecting your student’s development or academic performance, or may have a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, please contact the Director of Special Education at 703.791.7287 for further information.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

Happy Fall! As the seasons change we see an increase in students who are complaining of runny nose, sore throat and coughing. There can be multiple causes of these symptoms. Please make sure that you are monitoring your temperature and stay home if it is over 100 degrees F. The best way to stay healthy is to eat healthy, get enough sleep and WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!

I hope that you find this chart helpful, it is just a guide. If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Pam in the clinic.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year…Let’s stay healthy and enjoy it!!!
