Dear readers,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Over 55s Newsletter; and welcome back to your Centre!

The first quarter of 2015 has been very busy at the Seniors Centre; as you will discover, the refurbishment is finally over and we are open again. The Centre reopened its doors on Monday 23 March, it was a welcomed return to a newly refurbished senior centre. The alterations included a coat of paint, new carpet, relocated lift and more accessible stairs, making our centre more open and user friendly. We would like to thank and acknowledge the amazing help we received from the Art Gallery, Mosman Bowling Club, Youth Centre and Children Services (Drill Hall) have all contributed to help maintain the services and activities running throughout this period. We would also like to thank all the seniors for their patience, as well as all volunteers who assisted, and particularly the Community Restaurant.

Back by popular demand, we are re-running our balance program in April and May, find all details in this newsletter, and book early with Olivier. We have 2 different times available, 1.30pm and 3pm, next term starts Thursday 16 April; if you need help with your balance and movement or if you simply want to know more about what you can do to prevent a fall and stay safe at home, then this program is recommended for you.

Also back on the agenda, we have more Saturday trips, lunches and exciting activities coming up. Keep an eye out for our popular Anzac lunch on Friday 24 April, please book early. Also in this newsletter you will find some more exciting lunches you may wish to attend.

Seniors Week 2015 was a great success, we were lucky to have the Gunners Barracks and would like to thank the Mosman Jazz Ensemble and their teacher Todd who came and played for us, they were absolutely amazing! We also had a superb cocktail party with Greg Poppleton and his crew, and a wonderful Mayoral Lunch at the RSC in Mosman. A very busy week, well attended and lots of good fun had by all.

Remember in July (and until the end of the tax time), we will be hosting the ATO Tax Help Program, bookings are essential, please contact Olivier on 9978 4128. The appointed ATO volunteer can provide assistance with your tax returns.

Hello from the Community Restaurant. We are back on our home turf at last!!

Thank you all for your patience while we made a few changes in the Centre. I hope the changes are beneficial to everybody. It was a nice change moving to the Art Gallery for a few weeks. It is a beautiful setting, just not so easy for the chef. I'm sure we're happy to be back in the Seniors Centre.

The Australia Day Lunch was a lot of fun, followed by the Chinese banquet at the Art Gallery. The fabulous dancers who joined us again from Chatswood were marvellous and had more room to spread out. Seniors Week overall was a wonderful event. Activities included a Tea Dance, which the Art Gallery provided wonderful space for lots of dancing, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelight Orchestra were fantastic and great entertainers. Having the Mayor's Lunch at the RSC Mosman, was great fun and a lovely change. Many thanks to Councillor Corrigan for representing the Mayor and attending lunch with us.

Coming up on Friday 24 April is our special Anzac lunch celebration. Always a special occasion and very well attended, so remember to book your seat with Olivier. This year we have decided to have a Best of British Lunch, scheduled for Friday 29 May, and I'd love it if you all found something "British" to wear! Maybe a scarf or hat, something you have that might represent the British Isles. Following in June, is the Guringai Festival, this is a celebration honouring the traditional land owners of the Mosman area, The Guringai tribe, and we will celebrate this with our special lunch on Friday 28 June, another great lunch for your diary.

Thankyou all for your ongoing support of the Community Restaurant. It would be nothing without our wonderful Seniors!!

New start, new suburb – the challenges . . .

In previous newsletters we have discussed the issues to consider prior to making a move from your own home to something smaller which might include a unit, townhouse, self care unit within a retirement village. If you are an older person who lives in Mosman, maybe you have recently made this move.

Possibly you are new to the area and this can be very challenging. Apart from the fact you may be feeling a sense of loss – your old home, friends, friendly faces at the local shops, possibly driving, you can start to also doubt your decision to move and how you might manage. Be assured that support is available but that in ‘itself’ can be a challenge when you are feeling ‘a bit flat’.

Even if you are a long time Mosman resident the change to unit or self-care in a residential setting can mean you still feel a sense of loss. This can be the family home, a valued pet, possessions, known neighbours but it can also be a loss of privacy and self-sufficiency.

Many a decision to move can be precipitated by the loss of your spouse or partner and may involve pressure from family, who, feeling responsible for your wellbeing might see this as the ‘right decision for you’ at this time.

Any change can be difficult but as we become older and when health and/or mobility are also an issue, the change can feel overwhelming. The experience of grief, in response to loss, is very individual. Grief comes and goes which may mean that some days are better than others.

The challenge for anyone at any age is to try something new or different. This is even more challenging when you are overwhelmed due to changes in circumstances. Within this newsletter there are many activities and opportunities to enhance your life as it may now be. If you try something once and think this is not for me, we would encourage you to keep participating as sometimes it takes a little while to feel comfortable doing something different and meeting new people.

The Seniors Centre in Mosman Square is open every weekday and has been newly refurbished. Even if you do not wish to participate in an activity, feel free to call in and have a ‘cuppa’, chat to any of the staff, or make a time to see myself or Chantal by phoning 9978 4119. We would be only too happy to talk over any of your concerns and discuss the best options for you.

Getting in and out of cars is so much easier with a swivel seat! Aged and Disability Services office has a swivel seat that can be borrowed to assist with transporting someone in a car. We also have wheelchairs that can be borrowed for two weeks at a time. For Bookings please call Olivier on 99784128.

Welcome to our new driver ! You might have already met Jaspreet, or ‘Jazz’ as he likes to be called. He is our new Community Bus driver and we welcome him to the team. We asked him to write a few words about himself. Jaspreet Singh

I was born in Punjab in India. In 2006 I left India, leaving behind everything and studied Diploma Community Welfare. Initially I was jobless but soon I got an opportunity to work in aged care as a volunteer which I did for around six months. Later on I worked as a recreational activities officer in Thompson Health Care for 6 years and I am still working part time with them. After that my life started to change, I became a citizen of Australia and I got an opportunity to work with Mosman Council working in Aged and Disability Services. I will always be thankful to Dianne and Mosman Coun-cil for giving me this opportunity.

Mosman Bowling Club

The Mosman Bowling Club was pleased to make our Clubhouse available for Seniors' Tai Chi and Art classes over the last few weeks while the Council's usual premises were under renovation. Those who took part enjoyed the positive ambience of the Club. Anyone who wishes to give bowls a try should contact the Club. Men and women play the game together, and all ages participate. Members will be pleased to extend their hospitality. The Club provides free introductory lessons. These can be followed up with coaching, and we ensure new and prospective members are well looked after and made welcome. The coaches will get you on to the green as soon as possible so you can enjoy the game and the camaraderie of fellow bowlers. Renovation update...

Dear clients,

We welcome you back to the new Seniors Centre at Mosman Council.

You will of course, have noticed all the changes to the Aged and Disability Services, and might have experienced some inconvenience whilst the programs were relocated. Firstly, we would like to say a big “thank you” to all, clients, volunteers and staff, who have made this possible. While we were closed for renovations, all programs and services continued running. This was not always easy, but all the seniors were wonderful and helpful and accepted the temporary changes. We are very grateful to the Mosman Art Gallery, Mosman Bowling Club, Mosman Council’s Children Services (for use of the Drill Hall), and the Youth Centre, for hosting some of our events. This would not have been possible without you!

So, what is new? You will find out throughout the next few weeks that there have been many improvements to the Seniors Centre. Besides the new coat of paint and the new carpet in the lounge area (long overdue), we have relocated the lift and built a new staircase leading upstairs to the seniors’ lounge. We have lost a little space in the main hall, but this has provided better and safer access to upstairs. The renovation has provided more privacy during classes held in the hall.

Over the years, we had noticed that new clients to the centre had difficulties finding our offices, this should not be the case any longer. Also installed new glass doors between the lounge and the hall, which provides so much light and makes the whole space very modern. Last but not least, we have a wonderful new PA (audio-visual) system which will allow many possibilities in the future, i.e., movies, conferences, live interactions with other groups, the possibilities are endless and we are all very excited. U3A and a couple of other groups have already used the system enhancing experiences at the Centre.

Entry to our office is accessible through the Seniors’ Centre upstairs room, please phone 9978 4128 to make an appointment with our friendly staff as this is now a restricted access door.

We are looking forward to having you back at the Seniors’ Centre, all activities have resumed, why not join us for a community restaurant lunch, a game of scrabble, a Friday movie, balance class and much much more…. The ADS Team!

Mosman Historical Society Meeting

It also considers the provision of land for road, drainage, street lighting, pedestrian crossings, divided roads and the shortest and longest roads. John Dansie was a registered surveyor with the Department of Main Roads and the Roads and Traffic Authority in NSW for 40 yrs. He is a longstanding Mosman Historical Society committee member and was the 2014 Mosman Citizen of the Year.

Mosman University of the Third Age (U3A) U3A provides an opportunity to enjoy the stimulation of learning in a relaxed atmosphere ... no stress, no exams. Classes cover a wide range of subjects including: • history • geography • art appreciation • creative writing • discussion groups and more. Locally, U3A classes are held in the Mosman Seniors’ Centre, Mosman Art Gallery, The Manors of Mosman, The Garrison and in private homes. Knitting Group This group contributes to a charity organisation called Wrap with Love inc. which dispatches quilts and covers to the four corners of the world. Our Mosman group has continued with their amazing efforts and produced over 50 quilts for Wraps With Love in 2014. The Mosman knitting group needs more squares and more wool! Your Hand

I can still feel it, your hand. I held it as I sat beside your bed, Yours fingers curled inside mine.

Your skin was softer than it had ever been, Weeks in bed had gentled it. As the sleep of coming death

Possessed your body, My thumb stroked your knuckles Trying with all my being to tell you

You are not alone. I am here. Did you feel it?

The Earth

I pushed my fingers into the earth

Into the damp leaf mould the sweet sticky clay. The rich living soil

spoke to me. It spoke of life

and how things grow. It spoke of death

and how things change. The rich living soil told me, it and all that grew in it

all that lived on it all that took from it and I, were one.

The computer swallowed grandpa Yes, honestly it’s true!

He pressed ‘control and ‘enter’ And disappeared from view . It devoured him completely, The thought just makes me squirm. He must have caught a virus Or been eaten by a worm. I’ve searched through the recycle bin And files of every kind; I have even used the internet, But nothing did I find. In desperation I asked Mr Google My searches to refine, The reply from him was negative, Not a thing was found online. So if inside your inbox. My grandpa you should see, Please copy scan and paste him And send him back to me. This is a tribute to all the grandmas and grandpas who have been fearless and learned to use the computer….. They are the greatest!! We do not stop playing because we grow old, We grow old because we stop playing…

WHEN ON COMMUNITY BUS OUTINGS ORGANIZED BY MOSMAN COUNCIL FOR THE OVER 55s

Saturday 25 January 2014. This was the first council bus trip I was on this year. Mosman Council is a particularly responsible council with regard to looking after the well-being of its senior citizens. These journeys from 9am until about 5pm may be to a n y t h i n g f r o m a reasonably close alpaca farm to a distant display of

rhododendrons in the Blue Mountains or to some beautiful gardens in the Hunter Valley or, as in the picture up above, to somewhere like Kiama’s annual country show, gymkhana and fair.
