Important Health Warning About Playing Video GamesPhotosensitive seizuresA very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued.

The Main Menu screen is the starting point for all areas of the game.Here you can choose: New Game to start a new game; Continue Gameto resume from the last checkpoint; Level Select to replay an unlocked level;Options to adjust game and controller options; or Change Gamer Profileto modify your profile.If this is the first time you are playing Shellshock 2: Blood Trails:• Select New Game.• Select Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty.• Press > once the level has loaded.

You play Nate Walker. Get to know him well and use these characternotes to try to understand the special bond he has with his olderbrother Cal.

Private Nathanial (Nate) WalkerNate’s father was dishonorably dischargedfrom the US Army in World War Twofor cowardice, after suffering shellshock.Nate’s older brother Cal always resentedhis father. As soon as the US was suckedinto the Vietnam conflict, Calvolunteered to fight, to provethat he was not a coward like his father.It was not long before he was decoratedfor bravery at the siege of Khe Sanh.His father was overjoyed at the newsof the medal and Nate found himselfunder increasing pressure to volunteer.But before Nate could decide whatto do, he was drafted.

Sergeant Caleb (Cal) Walker

When the brothers were young, Cal alwayslooked after Nate, especially when they weretaunted by other kids about their father’sreputation for cowardice.In the Army, Cal was always the firstto volunteer for the most dangerousassignments. This “first into the fight”mentality generated furious loyaltyfrom the soldiers he fought with.Cal worked his way up to Squad Leaderof a Special Ops squad, the squad that wassent in to track down “Whiteknight.”

When the game begins, you have to hit the ground running.Initially, you won’t know what’s going on. You will be briefed by MasterSergeant Griffin, a fiercely patriotic psychotic who would willingly diefor his country.You are in the frontier town where Cal is quarantined. Griffin takes youto meet your incoherent brother. Cal’s first moment of clarity occurs when herecognizes you. There is a connection—but then an explosion blasts throughthe cell, showering debris into the room. When you come to, you spot Calescaping with Griffin racing after him.There’s very little time for basic training. You must chase them and learnthe basic game controls FAST—your life and the life of your brother nowdepend on it!

Shellshock 2: Blood Trails has a large number of intense levels. Each levelhas a number of mission objectives that you must complete before you canprogress to the next level.New objectives are added to the list as you progress. When added, they areshown briefly on-screen and then listed in the Objectives Menu.Completed objectives are checked off.

M I S S I O N O B J E C T I V E S

The game screen is deliberately left clear and uncluttered, enabling youto see and hear exactly what Nate Walker is experiencing. This conveysthe atmosphere of being there, deep in the jungle, surrounded by hostiles,the VC after your blood and a terrifyingly contagious virus primedand ready to infect you.Some HUD items and text messages will appear on-screen briefly, then fadeaway to clear the screen for action. The screen also graphically reflectsNate’s state of health, shock, stamina, etc.

You will find a numberof different US and VC weapons; those that can be picked up areclearly indicated.• Once you possess more than one weapon, you can scroll through them(put them into your hands) with s/o.

C r o s s h a i rEach pistol, rifle or automatic weapon you are currently holdinghas an on-screen crosshair sight icon that allows you to aim

and fire at a specific target.The crosshair is permanently on by default, but you can choose to switch itoff via the Options Menu. It will then appear on-screen only when youbegin to fire.

I r o n S i g h tEach pistol, rifle or automatic weapon also has the option of an Iron Sight.This raises the weapon’s sight up to your eye line, and allows you to firean accurate, finely controlled shot.• Pull w to use the Iron Sight.• You cannot use the Iron Sight while running, and you will not seethe crosshair.

C OMBAT

C o n t e x t u a l B u t t o nThere are many objects, items, and structures in the game that you can use,pick up, or interact with in some specific way. When you are nearthe object, an on-screen contextual button prompt will appear.• Press the contextual button shown on-screen to use, pick up, interact,and so on.

S t a n c e I c o nYou have two stance positions in the game: standing andcrouching. Standing gives you more mobility but makes youmore vulnerable. Crouching makes you slower across the groundbut puts you in a better defensive position. An icon appearsbriefly on-screen to show the changed stance.

• Click j to switch between standing and crouching.

Amm o a n d R e l o a d i n gAmmo is at a premium in the game. There’s not much of it around,so try not to waste it on indiscriminate fire.When your weapon is low on ammo, the weapon icon flashes upon the HUD. When your weapon is out of ammo, the weapon iconappears with a red cross through it.• Press X to reload the equipped weapon.

M e l e e A t t a c kIf an enemy jumps out at you tooclose for you to aim your weapon,you can use a melee attack to smashthe enemy in the face with whateveris in your hands.• Press B when close toan enemy to melee attack.

If you are not carrying a weapon,you will use your fist to smashthe enemy’s face.

G r a p p l e A t t a c kIf a deranged enemy suddenly gets rightin your face, that foe will lock you intoa hand-to-hand grapple.• To successfully grapple attack the enemy, press the on-screen buttonprompts in sequence.

• Once you manage to beat down the enemy, pull w / x to performthe finishing move of your choice.

T h r o w i n g G r e n a d e sYou can pick up and throw various different objects, such as grenadesand flares, but in combat the explosive grenades are by far the mostimportant.• Select the grenade (scroll through your items with m / q).• Turn and look in the direction you want to throw.• Press z to throw the grenade.The grenade is thrown in an arc in the direction you are facing:• If you are looking forward, level with the ground, the grenade will travelin a low trajectory arc.

• If you are looking up, you’ll get a longer distance on the throwby pressing, holding and then releasing z. Increase the effort you putinto throwing the grenade to increase the thrown distance.

A grenade is fitted with a detonation timer that initiates as soon as yourelease z. This means that a grenade thrown a great distance with a largetrajectory arc can explode in the air above an enemy, making himvulnerable even when he is in good cover.

H e a v y M a c h i n e G u n sAt certain times, you may have to firea mounted high-caliber weapon such asa heavy machine gun. These weapons cando a lot of damage in a short spaceof time, and can be very useful againsta strong, determined attack.• Approach the mounted gun by facingthe handles, and press Y. You willgrab hold of the gun.

• Aim with L.• Fire with x.• Press Y to release the mounted gun.

Wa l k i n g a n d R u n n i n gWalking is the default character movement in Shellshock 2: Blood Trails.You can also sprint by pressing and holding y.• Be aware that running tires you out and uses up stamina.

S t a m i n aMaintaining stamina is very important; it affects everything you do. Prolongedsprinting, the effects of shellshock, and taking damage all reduce your staminalevel. Reduced stamina affects your combat efficiency, reducing your reloadtime and the accuracy of your aim. You can preserve (or top up) stamina bywalking slowly, remaining still or crouching for a period of time.While there is no specific indicator on the HUD to show your stamina level,you can get a good idea via realistic audio feedback and on-screen effects.

B r e a t h i n gThe heavier and more frequent your breathing, the lower your stamina.When your stamina is at its lowest point, your breathing will changeto an unhealthy wheeze and you will only be able to move very slowlyacross the ground.

F l a s h l i g h tYou are carrying a useful flashlight that will help light your way throughpitch black tunnels and dark sections of the game. Remember: usinga flashlight will also make you visible to an enemy, so turn it off when it’snot essential to your progress.• Press A to turn the flashlight on/off.

H e a l t hYou are able to see your current state of health without affecting your fieldof view: as health decreases, the edges of the screen turn red and beginto close in. If you continue to take damage and die, your view will gocompletely dark. As you regain health from injuries, your field of vision isgradually returned to normal.

I n j u r yA number of full-screen effectsshow the effects of injury,impaired vision, drug useor shellshock. If Nate is badlyaffected by gas or smoke, youwill hear him cough and gaspand the screen will flash.

You can access the Pause Menu at any time to freeze the game and takea break from the intense action. The Pause Menu also allows you to:• Restart the level.• Return to the last checkpoint.• Access the game options.• View your current objectives.

WARRANTY CLAIMS & PRODUCT SUPPORT

The medium (i.e., disc/cartridge) on which an Eidos gamesoftware product is recorded (“Game Disc”) is warrantedto the original purchaser of the product to be free fromdefects in materials and workmanship for a periodof ninety (90) days from the original date of purchase.If the Game Disc is found to be defective in materials andworkmanship within 90 days from the date of purchase,Eidos agrees to replace the Game Disc to the originalpurchaser thereof, free of charge, upon receipt of theGame Disc and required proof of purchase. The foregoingreplacement remedy is the sole and exclusive remedy forbreach of the foregoing limited warranty, and Eidos shallhave no obligation to provide such remedy (i.e., freeGame Disc replacement) with respect to (i) any recordingmedium damaged by abuse, mistreatment or neglect (e.g.,cracks, scratches, damage from application of chemicals),(ii) any defect arising after ninety (90) days from theoriginal date of purchase of the corresponding product or(iii) in instances where the original purchaser cannotproduce a copy of the original sales receipt dated noearlier than 90 days preceding the date of return.

This limited warranty is in lieu of all other warranties,whether oral or written, express or implied, including,without limitation, any warranty of merchantabilityor fitness for a particular purpose, and no otherrepresentation of any nature shall be binding on orobligate Eidos. If any such warranties are incapable ofexclusion, then such warranties applicable to an Eidossoftware product are limited to the 90-day perioddescribed above. In no event will Eidos be liable for anyspecial, incidental or consequential damages resultingfrom possession, use or malfunction of an Eidos softwareproduct, including damage to property, and to the extentpermitted by law, damages for personal injury, evenwhen Eidos has been advised of the possibility of suchdamages.
