Outreach and engagement are not the same.
Outreach tends to be in and out. Engagement is a long-term effort, a relationship.

Outreach Examples• Providing new needles and bleach in an area
frequented by intravenous drug users• Bringing a mammography van into a rural area
without a hospital• Demonstrating correct child car seat
installation at a busy discount store on the weekend
• Handing out coupons for condoms at a coffee shop that is popular with teens
• Training individuals to provide health education in their own communities

Engagement means participating or becoming involved with others. This looks like• Being connected to others through a
defined purpose/plan• Being committed to a common
cause/purpose• Caring about similar issues
Engagement Example• DC Promise Neighborhood. The point
is to have the community working toward one goal, a collective goal. To make immediate and lasting positive change in a neighborhood.
