Outreach NEWS RELEASE September 9, 2014 PMINYC / NYU Career Panel Project Management: Your Career, Your Future PMINYC kicked off the Fall Season on September 5, with a panel discussion on project management careers. Co-sponsored by New York University, School of Professional Studies (SPS), the event brought out an enthusiastic audience of 40 SPS graduate students and PMINYC members on a Friday night. Suzan Cho, VP for Outreach, moderated the panel discussion by PMINYC mentors Larry Mantrone, Frank Saladis, Josh Lerner and Charlie Cirronella. PMINYC kicked off the Fall Season on September 5, 2014, with a panel discussion on project management careers. Co-sponsored by New York University, School of Professional Studies (SPS), the event brought out an enthusiastic audience of 40 SPS graduate students and PMINYC members on a Friday night. Suzan Cho, VP for Outreach, moderated the panel discussion by PMINYC mentors Frank Saladis, Josh Lerner, Charlie Cirronella and Larry Mantrone. The evening started with a lively conversation when panelists posed a question to the audience: Why are you interested in project management as a career? The desire for variety, innovation and challenge quickly emerged as a common theme. Suzan then engaged the panelists in a discussion of the global reach of project management. This topic led to the issue of virtual teams, along with challenges for communication and personal management skills. Communication skills dominated the discussion as a key factor in the success (or failure) of projects. other qualifications for effective project managers: leadership, relationship skills, organizational skills, flexibility and political savvy – predominantly soft skills. Aspiring project managers can also gain an advantage with PMP certification, business experience, industry expertise and technical knowledge. In closing, panelists summarized their advice to future project managers. Charlie emphasized what he called “The Four Pillars of Project Management,” based on ethics and responsibility. Frank advocated professionalism and the precept, “chance favors the prepared mind.” Larry recommended a thick skin and a poker face to cope with project challenges. Josh pointed to the trend towards transferable skills and encouraged people to “think big.” Afterwards, panelists and audience networked over wine and refreshments. A follow-up workshop will take place on November 7 with a focus on resume writing and the job search.
