The General Secretary’s thoughts.

'Use what you have, for your Master'Dear Outreach readers,

Greetings to one and all. Another academic year has begun. We are very glad to hear that many of our missionaries' and our believers' children enter into colleges of repute, pursuing their dreams. Thanks for praying for them.

The recent disaster in Uttarakhand, caught the authorities napping. People were literally swept away as the swirling waters of the Ganges inundated the banks. The tragedy became all the more gripping as innocent people lost their lives, when whole buildings collapsed. Actually, the buildings should not have been there in the first place. We seem to be having the habit of flaunting rules to get short term benefits which shows nothing but selfishness at the core. When rules are violated, we inevitably have to face the consequences. Consequences that not only affect 'me' but also my surroundings. Will we ever learn?

Wouldn't it be the ache of the Lord too? As He would have seen hundreds of people heading towards eternity without getting into a relationship with Him. As we celebrate the independence day this month, we need to carry this heartache of God and show our people that freedom and solutions to our problems can only be found at the foot of the Cross. But some how we, the ones who have experienced freedom have our own reasons and excuses for not sharing the gospel. Isn’t it another form of selfishness? We need to be involved in this work urgently before the deluge of God's fury strikes.

There are a few places in this planet, that are blessed with constant water supply which makes these places extremely fertile and beautiful. One such area is Punjab which falls on both sides of the border. This area is watered by five rivers hence the name Punjab. The people here are hardworking and loving, harvesting the bounties of the land year after year. The Apostle Paul chose strategic places to preach the Gospel for he knew that those who encounter the Gospel at such places would eventually be carriers of the Gospel to their own lands. Following his footsteps, our forerunners also have preached the Gospel in this strategic place.

One such is Rev. Robert Clark, an honors graduate from Cambridge who laid his ambitions at the Cross and landed as the first CMS missionary in Punjab.

As much as the land is fertile and the harvest plenty, it seems the Lord has prepared the hearts of the people to receive the good seed of the Gospel. And it is bearing fruit. Rejoice with us.The Lord is building His Church. We are featuring our work in Bhatinda field which is part of Punjab. We need more labourers to gather in the harvest.

May the Lord burden you to get involved all the more.

Happy Reading, From all of us hereNelson Dinakaran, Editor

Gerald was ecstatic as he came from the Youth Missionary camp. His heart was thumping for action. However, he told, 'Pastor, I want to hear God's voice audibly about what I should do for Him.' The Pastor calmly said, 'You may or may not hear an audible voice. But that is not a criteria to serve the Lord.' Gerald responded, ' I need to have a supernatural experience, then people will know who I am and respect me. I am not going to do anything until I hear from the Lord.' Many of us don't do anything for the Lord, we have our excuses.

As a young man, William Carey had an unquenchable desire to take the Gospel to the then unreached world. Though he had many impediments, he wasn't quiet; he hung a world map in front of him as he was mending shoes as a reminder to increase the burden of the great calling.

All of us, who are interested in our Master's business, have the natural and spontaneous desire to do something for our master. But, the major excuse we share to others with pride is we do not possess the qualities required for the work of the Lord. 'If only... 'and the list of excuses goes on. Jesus who was intentionally following Simon, wanted him to grasp this truth; that he needs to begin with what he has. Therefore Jesus commanded Simon: 'Let your net down into the deep.'

Recognise what you have: Simon the fisher man was put on the spot, by a carpenter saying, ‘use your net’. In the parable of talents, we see all were given talents to do something. Often we fail to see what we have. Human tendency is always to see what we don't have. We tend to compare with others and complain, forgetting what we have. Are we thankful to God for the life, opportunities, time and talents? The American World No. 1 tennis player, Arthur Ashe said: 'Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.' None of us will dare to say, 'God has not given anything to me.' Yes, God has given everything for us, even His son.

Return the resources to the giver: The Lord is neither unfair nor has unrealistic expectations. He does not ask accounts for what is not given us. First of all, we have not brought anything into this world. [1 Tim 6:7] Therefore, what we have belongs to God. Secondly, God does not need anything from us. All the wealth of the world belongs to him. Look at the gentleness of Jesus; he comes and asks Simon to use his boat for His ministry. Thirdly, God is not selfish; He gave his best, His son, therefore why not we, as regenerated people give back our best to Him?

Reward and resourcefulness is for sure: Peter gave his empty boat , cast the empty net and in return both got filled and overflowing. Christy lane in her song beautifully renders “Shattered dreams wounded hearts... Give them all to Jesus, and He will turn your sorrow into Joy”. Peter learnt this lesson and applied it when he was confronted by a crippled beggar: "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you:

In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene-- walk!" [Acts 3:6] He understood the power in the name of Jesus Christ which is sufficient in any situation Once we learn this truth 'what we don't have' is not a problem. In worldly terms, we may not have anything, but the name of Jesus can meet every need. We become resourceful to bless others. By giving to Mission work, no one has gone bankrupt or poor, however, by hoarding or with holding no one can find satisfaction and happiness.

Charles T Studd the famous cricketer had so much of wealth, but gave it all to the Lord's work, for he had found a greater wealth. "I cannot tell you," he later said, "what joy it gave me to bring the first soul to the Lord. I have tasted almost all the pleasures this world can give. Those pleasures were as nothing compared to the joy that the saving of that one soul gave me."

The Golden Harvest [GHI]: GHI is a mission multiplication methodology whereby it gives courage, commitment and passion to each worker of IEM to enlarge their vision, double their efforts and sharpen their tools in order to reap a golden harvest of seekers, believers and churches which will impact community and nation. Small teams of trainers will go to different mission fields to train missionaries to evolve a strategy planning for 'Vision 2020.' By the end of this year we will have a document with goals and road map for each mission field. In doing this, we have to invest around Rs. 15,00,000/-. We are boldly venturing into this initiative since it has the potential to double our efforts and add thousands of souls. we aim to plant 2000 churches in seven years. If any of you is moved to support this worthwhile cause please contact us.On August 15 we celebrate the 67th Independence Day of India. 'India has one third of the poorest' says World Bank. Let us pray for prosperity, peace and eradication of Bible poverty. IEM is committed to 'Make every believer a Literate.'

Please take a minute to stop everything and pray for the people of India the 2nd largest country.

Among the unreached people IEM focuses on Sikhs in Punjab. Please read on to see how the Lord has encouraged us by giving many souls and churches.

Let me conclude with an interesting experience. An elderly couple came to see me with their grand children in my office. They came to handover the money for the church building construction. They brought Rs. 3,00,000/- in three bundles. The grand mother gave each grandchild a bundle and asked them to hand it over to me. And each child gave the money in my hands with a broad smile and joy. It was an unforgettable experience for me. How are we teaching our children to give for the work of the Lord?

We thank each one of you for your sacrificial giving and prayers. Let us give ourselves to the Lord and extend the kingdom of God in our generation,

Our Sovereign God acts on a divine timetable, to fulfil his

purposes, and chooses people to fulfil this task. In this stirring Bible

study Rev. Dr. M. Mani Chacko, Ph.D (Lond.) General Secretary,

The Bible Society of India takes us into the barriers that pose a great challenge in

getting engaged in the Mission of God.

While shepherding the flock of his father in law Jethro, Moses received the call of

God and receives a mission mandate when God told him “I have observed the misery of

my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry… indeed I know their suffering…I

have come down to deliver them… to bring them out of that land to a good and broad

land, a land flowing with milk and honey…Behold, the cry of the people of Israel has

come to me, and I have seen the oppression with which Egyptians oppress them.

Come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites out of Egypt” (Ex:

3:7, 8, 9, 10). This mission mandate was met with a true confession of certain fears by

Moses. It is those fears which may grip us even today as we engage ourselves in God's

mission.

Moses' words "who am I....?" (3:11) stem from a feeling of inadequacy for the task. It

is the spontaneous response of Moses who senses the gaping discrepancy between

his own ability and the enormity of the task. The first fear of Moses is dealt with by

giving him an assurance and a sign: "....I will be with you; and this will be the sign for

you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall

serve God upon this mountain" (3:12). Moses is assured that God will accompany him,

that the basis for his being sent does not rest on his ability, but on his being a vehicle for

God's plan. The sign 'serving on this mountain' which is given is to confirm the act of his

commissioning. The sign which is futuristic has caused scholars to differ in their

understanding. However, the text is clear in one aspect-the fact that the divine

presence is promised to Moses.

The second fear concerns the unknown future. It is an indication of his fear of the

unknown that if the people should ask him the name of "the God of your father", he

would have nothing to tell them: "If I go to the Israelites and say to them 'the God of

your fathers has sent me to you' and they ask me 'what is his name?" What shall I say to

them?" (3:13). There has been a great deal of debate as to the exact implications of this

question. B.S. Childs, a Bible scholar expresses the possibility that the query raised by

Moses would have been influenced by the issue of the true and false prophet, in the

course of its transmission, as it is clear that early in Israel's history, the test for being a

true messenger was linked to prophesying in the name of Yahweh (Deut.l3; I Kings

18:19 ff). If this were correct, then the point of the query was to elicit from Moses an

answer which will serve as the ultimate test of validity of himself being a prophet..

This fear of the unknown is dealt with in the form of an idem per idem an emphasis

formula: "I am who I am" (vs.14a). There has been again considerable discussion as to

the meaning of this expression. D.N. Freedman, a Bible scholar recognising the parallel

with the idem per idem construction in Exodus 33:19, renders the enigmatic

expression in Ex. 3:14 as "I create what I create" or more simply "I am the Creator".

Th.C. Vriezen has argued that the formula is not simply an expression of indefiniteness,

but emphasises the actuality of God....: "I am there wherever it may be....I am really

there!" , thus expressing divine presence.

Moses already concludes that he will face, anger and

reproach from people when he goes to carry out God's

mission and therefore he is gripped with the fear of

reproach. He says"....they will never believe me or listen

to me, because they will say 'Yahweh did not appear to

you' “(4:1). This fear of Moses is dealt with by the introduction and function of the rod.

The rod stands for the authority of Moses as the leader. At times, the rod is described

as the "rod of God" (Ex. 4:20; 17:9). Thus the rod not only symbolises Moses' authority,

but also the source of his authority. The signs performed by the rod become the

equipment of God's messenger. It functions not only to convince the people of Moses'

office as leader, but also basically to convince his own self that God has called him to

assume the leadership role.

The fourth fear echoes a note of incompetence: "Oh Lord, I have never been

eloquent ... "Oh Lord, please send someone else" (4:10, 13). This fear seems to be more

akin to the initial objection as it refers again to his personal qualifications. This fear is

met with by an assurance which comes in the form of a wisdom saying, making Moses

aware of the reality of Yahweh as the creator God and by giving him again the promise

of divine presence. God's reply reflects the same patient dealing with the chosen

leader, but this time a note of urgency is sounded, which is evident by the use of the

imperative: "Now go, and I will be with your mouth and I will teach you what you shall

say" (vs. 12). God's presence underwrites Moses' mission and authority and it is out of

that presence that he is to exercise his role as leader. When he further refused to go

with a desperate, "Oh Lord, please send someone else", Aaron is introduced as a

helper to Moses: "He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your

C. Fear of Reproach

D. Fear of Incompetence

mouth and as if you were God to him" (4:16).

The Mission of God takes place in varied contexts. First, there is the context of

Globalisation. On the one hand, Globalization has a considerable impact on all aspects

of societal life: economy, politics, culture, communication and the individual's sense of

value and morality; Globalization has brought a number of benefits on different

aspects of life. On the other hand, with its promotion of individualism at the expense

of the community, globalization has widened the gap between people, nations, the

wealthy and the impoverished. Secondly there is the context of technology. Along

with Globalization has come an increased use of technology and greater access to

information. Information technology has both positive and negative aspects. On the

positive side, people can communicate with each other more freely and immediately,

and the ability to store, retrieve, process, and disseminate information has increased.

On the negative side, 'virtual contact' may become more important than personal

contact. Moreover Information technology runs the risk of increasing the gap

between those who have access to this technology and those who do not. Thirdly,

there is the context of Health. Advances in scientific knowledge and technology have

led to considerable progress in combating various diseases and other threats to

health. Nevertheless the world continues to struggle with health issues. One major

health hazard is the spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic. It has reached pandemic

proportions in many countries and even in India. The fourth context is the context of

Violence. God's mission has always taken place in the midst of a violent world.

Violence is a potent tool used by those with power or seeking power to control,

suppress, or enforce change for their own benefit. It takes place in different forms:

War and Conflict, Structural and Systemic Violence, Violence against Women, Children

and the weak; Violence in Religion and the Church etc. Fifthly, there is the context of

Religious Pluralism. The church existing along with other faith traditions is a reality

today. In this context, how to live as a Christian and how to present the Gospel of Jesus

Christ is a continuous challenge.

It is in such a context as above, we are being called by God in co working with God in

God's mission. In this process, we may be gripped with fear as in the case of Moses-

Fear of Inadequacy; Fear of the Unknown; Fear of Reproach and Fear of

Incompetence. In the midst of fear, God comes to us as “I am what I am” and gives us

the assurance that God is with us as we partner with God in God's mission of

transformation.

As we step into the 67th Independence year, Lord we thank you for your sovereign wisdom for giving us a land so rich and

beautiful, and also the freedom. We want to thank you for giving us the gift of

democracy and a rich Constitution, where the rule of the people governed by the law is

binding on one and all.

We thank you for the rich Diversity you have put into this ancient land, where we

have so many races, languages, cultures, religions and boundaries, factors that can

easily divide us but we are still one country! some thing that is baffling!

We thank you for your sovereign plan of including India in the plan of salvation and

sending your servants for the past 2000 years. We know had it not been for the gospel

and the Love of Christ multitudes would have been still shackled to the age old

superstitions and devilish bondages.

We want to thank you for those visionaries who selflessly worked compelled by the

love of Christ amidst adverse circumstances, establishing schools colleges

orphanages, hospitals, and most of all gave the Word of Life in the many native

languages of our country so that we could enjoy the spiritual freedom learn to live with

dignity, reap the benefits of health, knowledge and development

We want to thank you for loving our country and keeping the doors for the Gospel

open where we can freely go to worship you, and share about you. Thank you for

raising leaders from time to time to kindle our spirits with the passion for taking your

gospel to unreached areas.

We thank you for the Leaders who have ruled us, some good and some bad, who

have managed to pull us for the past 66 years. We want to thank you for a remnant of

righteous people who fear you, who are your salt, quietly influencing the power

corridors

We want to thank you for the families you have given to us, the foundation of a

vibrant society remaining intact still and for the children whom we love,

We want to thank you for the restraining power with which you have zealously

protected us from all the attacks of the enemy, whose sole aim is to steal, kill and

destroy, nullifying his schemes and exposing him for who he is.

We want to thank you for the generation that is passing, who have given us values

that we cherish and want to follow. We want to thank you for the church which is the

bulwark of truth to stand tall as a light house amidst all the gloom and hopelessness of

corruption. Just want to say a Big THANKYOU

In 1 Chronicles 12:32, the Bible says, “Men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do…” Understanding your place in the world is a must to faithfully live for God. Dr Sun Yet-sen once said, “there are some who can sense great things that will take place; others may realize what happened after the fact and what should have been done; still there are others who live in total oblivion!”As modern Christians living in a globalised world, we often have two realities. I wonder to which you belong: Do you sense the importance of participating in God's work today? Or are you so preoccupied with “making it” in the “Asian way” that you have no time or energy to focus on God's concerns? In our materialistic societies, most people know how to make more money, but relatively few are sensitive to the spiritual needs of this age. It's discouraging when Christians also focus more on the material gain of this world, and relatively few are willing to actively invest in God's work.In 1 Chronicles 12:32, we see the Issachar men knowing their place in history and then guiding Israel to action. Do you know your place in history? Let's have a look at the world today with a Kingdom perspective: This is a time when people move for economic benefit. We see an influx of hundreds of thousands of people immigrating from other countries to work and study. They are away from home and need support from Christians like you in their new environment. Even more, they need the grace and peace of a relationship with God. Likewise, millions of Indians move overseas to work and study each year. Have you considered reaching out to these people when they are overseas? Today we see many Asians moving overseas to work. Some of these are Christians and often they go to strategic places, where traditional missionaries have no access and the gospel presence is limited. What opportunity! In our organization SIM, we are passionate about equipping the next generation of missionaries, many of them from Asia to serve in our mission fields in more than 50 countries worldwide. It is our goal that professionals and business people from India be intentionally empowered for missions when they move overseas. This is a time when Asians are highly welcomed in many countries. As such, I challenge you with the following: We should intentionally engage in Reverse Mission: reaching out to the thousands of migrants at our doorsteps and those in foreign lands. These migrants who, when coming to know God as their Lord and Saviour, could in turn take the Gospel back to their own people. Churches should intentionally allocate resources, especially finances to world missions. We spend too high of a proportion on ourselves and our own internal church needs. It's time we invest in world missions. Jesus spoke to this in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When we give to world missions, our hearts will be there too. We need to be intentional and disciplined in this. Asian Churches should develop the talents of their members, encouraging youth and middle-aged people toward long-term missions involvement. This is a God given era. May we not waste the opportunity to seize the day, for His glory! SIM is an international mission organization of more than 1,600 missionaries from more than 30 nations, serving in Asia, Africa and Latin America. SIM is a partner organization with IEM and we seek to glorify God by planting, strengthening, and partnering with churches. As a partner with IEM in India we hope many labourers will be recruited for world missions through this partnership.

Bhatinda - an overview!!A survey team consisting of Rev. John Raj, Mr. M.

G. Daniel and Rev.Dr. Raja singh went to Amritsar along with Mr. Nicholson. They visited Bhatinda district, the southern most district of Punjab because it is one of the least evangelized districts. As per the 1991 census, the Christian population here was only 0.06% and the literacy rate was very low. After surveying Bathinda for a day, they went to Lehra Mohabbat of Rampura Taluk, which is 26 Kms east of Bathinda town. They found that no Christians live in that locality and decided to start the work there. Mr. YunasMasih the local Christian helped them in getting more information. He took them to the village president and shared about their purpose of

visit. God opened his heart. He gave his house for our pioneer missionaries Mr. & Mrs. George Oommen and Rev. & Mrs. Rakesh from where they could start their work. The campus is quite big where we can have all kinds of evangelistic, discipleship and leadership programmes and the house is big enough to accommodate 100 people. The ministry has grown and is spreading its wings. Presently we have adopted one of the Taluks named Phul in Bathinda district of Punjab which has got around 100 villages. By God's grace today we have 5 worship groups in some of these villages. These villages are looked after by 4 missionary couples and one evangelist.

The people of Punjab are very hard working and since the area is very fertile they mostly depend on agriculture. in fact Punjab is called the granary of India. They follow Sikhism and are very orthodox in their beliefs. They eat roti, made of wheat three times a day. The men wear long sleeve shirt, pajama and turban and women wear salwar and kameez . Their main festivals are Lorhdi, Gurparve, Deevali etc. They are known for their hospitality and gaity. Women are known for their weaving skills. They also love music and dance. In Bhatinda we mainly work among the Jat Sikhs and the Majhabi Sikhs. Generally, people here are receptive to the Gospel.

Apart from doing personal evangelism, we take the opportunity to reach out to children and youth with the Gospel. We conduct children's clubs, tuition classes and

other special programs weekly for children and weekly Bible studies, special youth programmes once in three months and special counseling sessions for youth. We also have special meetings from time to time for women. It's a special time of discussing different issues faced in families and society culminating in a good counseling time and sharing about Jesus, the Redeemer.

The Lord has been blessing our efforts and He has

God Prepares the WayOur Testimony

My wife and I belong to Nagercoil, in Kanyakumari District. I was born in a Christian family. After completing my Engineering education I worked in various reputed firms in Madras, Baroda, Bombay, etc.

In March 1984, at my age of 35, I attended a small gospel meeting, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab in which, I came to know that I needed to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and there I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour and we both witnessed in baptism. At that time I was working there as an Engineering Manager in Hawkins Cookers Ltd.

The Holy Bible, the Word of God, is the perfect and complete revelation of God to man. As we grew in faith we relished in the revealed truth of the word of God. The Lord led us to share these Truths with others, initially in Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Phagwara, etc. The Lord promised to us, “I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it (Rev.3:8).”

Later, in the year 1989 while I was working in Bombay, the Lord put the burden in my heart and led us to leave my job and go back to Punjab. From that time, our dear Lord is lovingly caring for us and guiding us. We went on outreach along with brethren who visited us periodically from Chennai, we preached the gospel in many villages and towns. Presently we are directly involved in four local churches in Amritsar District.

We, together with many local believers, regularly attend the Special Meetings and Youth Camps conducted in Mount Carmel School, New Delhi. In these meetings, brothers from IEM used to conduct sessions on Missionary Call. In these sessions, some of our youth have committed themselves to go as missionaries. Two such families are presently working with IEM.

In one such meeting the Lord prompted the IEM leaders Gladson Anchan and Raja Singh to open a mission station in Punjab. This they confided to Bro. V. K. Williams who readily gave his hand in support. Three brothers (Rajasingh, John Raj & MG Daniel) came to Amritsar for survey in Sept 2000. After the survey, the first IEM missionaries to this field came and stayed with us for a few months and then started working in Lehra Mohabbat from Nov 2002.We really have an open door here to preach the Gospel. There is a good response in the villages. By the grace of our Lord the work is spreading to many villages in Bathinda District. All the southern districts of Punjab have very low Christian presence. Please pray for these areas.Presently there are a lot of Christian workers in Punjab, but very few are presenting the gospel in simplicity and clarity. The dire need of the hour is servants of the Lord who have a very clear understanding of the Gospel with total commitment for selfless service. – Brother Nicholson was part of the team that surveyed Bhatinda

Evangelism and church growth in the Bathinda field. In the beginning when IEM surveyed the Malwa region of Punjab, Bathinda district

was the least evangelized area. But today, after 10 years of ministry, we have very good harvest among the Sikh community. We praise God for the wide open doors and opportunity for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ among this people group. We have used different methods to establish the ministry.First JOY:-In the initial stage there was no provision of motorcycle- so we cycled to many villages during hot summer and severe winter for tract distribution and making new contacts. During this time, God gave us the opportunity for personal evangelism. As a result of this today we have many contacts and seekers in different villages. We have screened films on Jesus' life, De-addiction and prodigal son; As a result, many have put their faith in the Lord.Ministry among children When we started tuition classes for children, God gave the opportunity to meet the childrens' parents and listen to their problems and pray for them. God miraculously worked in the hearts of people and they have experienced deliverance from the Lord. Through tuitions we have good relationships with village people. They have testified that the children who come to us have become good children. After 7 years of ministry today we have 30 children attending tuition, children’s club and Sunday worship. Among these children 12 accepted Jesus Christ, purchased a Bible, are reading Bible and growing in the lord. We praise God for the opportunity to develop the next generation. Special prayer

As we focus deep into the lives of the villagers- we have found that people are under the bondage of evil spirits, curses, black magic and blind faith. As we all have moved to different villages God is using us to deliver people from all of Satan’s powers and all his authority. We pray for the people and the wonderful hand of God delivers and sets them free from all bondages. Many believers are testifying to the miracles the Lord has done in their lives. We too need your prayer support as we are involved in this battle. Satsang meetings:

In this meeting, we and the audience sit together and sing a lot of meaningful Gospel songs. We tell them stories and give a brief Gospel message. At the end people come forward to be prayed over for their problems and sicknesses. Wonderfully God has answered our prayers and many have experienced the healing touch of the Lord. People have believed Jesus Christ

through this satsang and are now attending the church.

graciously given us the increase. we had the joy of seeing many people openly confess the Lord. The greatest joy for us is when people come forward and take this bold step to follow the Lord.We have the following two projects: (1) Tailoring: Tailoring classes for women are going on in 4

villages. In a few villages, classes will resume after the season of paddy plantation is over. So far 36 women have been benefited from this course. Apart from learning tailoring, our women missionaries also find time to share the gospel with them. As a result one of the women recently accepted Christ and attends Church regularly.

(2) Life Renewal Centre: In one of the villages named Lehar Cohabit, the Mission has purchased 13 cents of land. The purpose is to build a church building as well as to

put up some rooms to make it a training centre. There are a number of programs taking place from time by time in our field and in the northern fields of IEM as well. This could be a convenient place where missionaries and church leaders can come for training and even for other meetings. Continue to stand with us in prayer as we go forward in claiming the victory of our Lord in this part of our Land

CHALLENGESWeather: Bathinda is known for extreme climates hot during summer and extreme cold during winter. We need God's grace to cope up with the extremesDrugs : Drug addiction is a big menace here as more and more young people are getting addicted to this. Drug peddlers have a hay day. The challenge is to present the Gospel and act in compassion so that they can experience the deliverance through the Lord Jesus Christ.Evil forces :People are under the bondage of witchcraft and black magic. Many people are possessed by evil forces. This is our spiritual warfare .We need to claim the victory over forces of darkness.Pray ferventlyThat the church will march forward gaining new grounds. Believers will be rooted in the Word and follow a life style that will glorify the LORD.Missionaries will be granted wisdom and discernment to patiently disciple the young church. The churches will catch the vision of Missions and be actively involved in evangelizing the people of Punjab Contributed by: Rev. Youth ministryOnce upon a time Punjab was known as a golden sparrow but today the situation is so

different and young people are under bondage of drug addiction, unemployment and

loneliness. Depression and suicide are on the increase. In the state of Punjab Malwa

region is affected very badly and is known for drugs and most of the young people are

in its bondage. In this very critical situation it is a great responsibility for the local

church and missionaries to counsel the youngsters, pray for them, and reach out to

them with the Gospel. Because, Jesus is the only answer.

When we look at the situation our hearts are filled with the burden to reach out to

these beloved young people. We praise God for our team in Lehera Mohabat,

Nathana, Mehraj and Kothaguru villages. We have special concern and plan for our

youths. We have around 50 youths attending our youth programmes and retreats. In

Nathana church we have a youth club managed by our youth. They plan for the

monthly youth meetings where they invite neighbors and young friends. They bring a

lot of contemporary issues for group discussion like dowry, drug-addiction and early

marriage etc. and we conclude it with a Biblical message. This is very good that every

month we get new young people and we teach them the word of God.

By the Grace of God we get a lot of opportunity to pray for the young people who are

under drug addiction. After much prayer we have seen the positive response and the

wonderful work of the Lord in these young lives. We hear many good testimonies from

our missionaries during our team prayer meetings.

In Mehraj 16 youths gather every week and have special Bible classes . As a result of it

4 young people started reading the Bible systematically and 1 has taken baptism. We

started it this year with 2 people and God is adding more. Glory to Him alone.

Continue to pray for the youth of Punjab, the church needs these youth who are going

to be the future pillars of our church in Punjab. Pray that we may reach these with

special plans and different strategies. Pray for Gods guidance to deal with youth.

Bravo! Honouring the commitment of Robert Clark to come to India, his mother said, “It is easy to give 1 or 10, but not to offer a child. I hope the Lord has put it into your heart to choose the most noble service but you must count the cost. It is no light matter to be servant to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I feel as if I could not give my consent to part with a child into a distant country, for any worldly motive. This, however, seems a different case, and I hope that God will make us willing to part with him by His power, if it be His will to make use of Robert.

read. You're not going to be equipped Christians until you read the Word of God for

Missionary Testimony

I was born and brought up in a Hindu family. My father was an ardent believer in Hindu belief systems and hence very strict in bringing me up in performing rituals to appease the family gods. But life took a turn when business failures and sickness overpowered him. He lost his faith in the gods and superstitious beliefs. It is at this time that he turned towards worshipping the Living God and surrendered his life to Him. The transformation in him was so wonderful that it drew me also to the Living God Jesus Christ. I too surrendered my life to His lordship and joined a Bible school. There the Lord challenged me for North Indian ministry. After working for sometime with CEF in Kerala, I got married and I joined my husband Stephen to serve in Kullu valley in Himachal Pradesh. Since 2008, both me and my husband are stationed in Bhatinda, Punjab and are laboring among the Sikh community. Many families are under demonic oppression and in the bondages of Narcotics and seek deliverance from its clutches. I have a good opening among the ladies and children and see many possibilities for the Gospel to take roots in this place. My husband and I have fixed our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and are sowing the seeds of the Gospel. By faith we live and move in Him and foresee a good harvest in this community.

Testimony of local evangelist

My name is James. I come from Amritsar district of Punjab. My coming to know the Lord is quite interesting. My wife invited me to church one day in April 1995. I went there reluctantly. In that service, a pastor spoke from Rom.6.23 and Rev.21.8. I felt as if the message was directed to me as my heart was gripped with fear and on the same day, I confessed my sins and accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour.Soon after, I started helping the pastor in the ministry along with my secular work. From the 1st of December 2008, I joined IEM as a local evangelistand was stationed in Nathana village for 3 years. Then I moved to Kothaguru where I am right now with my family. We gather here for worship every Sunday and there are six families who attend worship regularly. I go around distributing tracts, visit homes for prayer and take Bible studies in 11 villages around Kothaguru. Please pray that the Lord will graciously establish the work of our hands.

Mrs. Rani Kaur is from Nathana village. She is a Sikh. She is blessed with three children. Her husband left her and the children. She is taking care of her children alone. Suddenly one day she fell sick. She went to the doctor for consultation and treatment. After check-up the doctor wrote some medical tests for her. When the results came, the Doctor saw her medical test results and told her “you are suffering from cancer”. One question that came to her mind immediately was ‘who will take care of my children?’. She was afraid and she became discouraged. She did not realize that she had had cancer for a long time. Her relative is a believer in Jesus Christ. He shared about Jesus Christ to her saying , “Jesus Christ loves you, if you will believe in Jesus Christ he will heal you from cancer”. Than she came to Church to be prayed for. She prayed to Jesus Christ, “Heal me from cancer, I trust you Jesus”.After some days she felt some difference in her body. She went to the doctor for a review. That doctor examined her with the fresh lab results, to his utter disbelief there was no cancer in her .She was healed from cancer. Jesus Christ healed her. She started to come to church every Sunday and she started to pray every day. She has accepted Jesus Christ as her personal saviour on 14 April 2012.Now she is growing in the Lord and testifying

to others.

Mr. Pappa singh is a believer. In the month of January 2013,an evil spirit disguising itself in the form of a pagan deity came to him and asked him to offer worship .But Mr. Pappa told that evil spirit, “I will not worship you, nor give any thing to you, because I am a believer of Jesus Christ. Then that evil spirit told him, “You will be in trouble”.

Mr. Pappa replied to the evil spirit, “Even If I have to die I will not worship you”. After some time he became sick, he was mentaly disturbed. But he prayed with us and he was healed by Jesus Christ. Then the evil spirit tormented his wife Mrs. Shalo and his daughter Miss. Kulvant. But he kept his faith in Jesus Christ. And we prayed continuously for three nights in the Church and his wife and his daughter were delivered from the evil spirit. Now the whole family is experiencing the peace and joy

Short Term Bible School, Bathinda Field

The Need:- The Lord has been good to us, He has been graciously adding souls into His church through our ministry. The greatest challenge for us as spiritual fathers was to feed the young church with the Word of God. From the begining the Lord had laid a burden in our hearts to give systematic Biblical teaching so that the growing church would stand strong. To do this we started the short term Bible school where believers come and they are taught from the Word of God.

How It is Conducted:- Once in three months, believers, seekers and contacts ( both literate or illiterate) are gathered in their respective places of worship by the concerned missionaries for Bible study, apart from the regular Bible studies done in the believers' houses. During this time missionaries use different ways and means such as pictures, visual aids etc, to teach the word of God. These studies emphasize faith received only through Jesus Christ, which is the very foundation of Christian life. People are also taught how to be firm in Christ and stand strong and steadfast in their faith, whatever may be the circumstances they go through.

The Selection:- But, at the same time, for a thorough, deeper and comprehensive study of God's Word and its doctrines, we select a group of people, mostly the young, who are literate and potential from the above said group. This group will consist of 10 to 12 people. Twice in a year, this selected people are brought to a particular place in the field itself for a systematic Bible study. Prior to this, all missionaries sit together to prepare a curriculum. The missionaries handle different subjects and take turns to co-ordinate the entire programme.

The purpose:- There are, mainly, threefold purposes why we hold STBS on the field. (1) To see that this selected group may be imparted and the knowledge of God's

word calculated in them thoroughly. So that they may get a proper understanding of it and will not deviate from the basic principles and doctrines of it as well.

(2) To see that their potentialities and leadership qualities are tapped out and the God given skills and talents are developed.

(3) To see that they may grow and be matured in godly character and also be an exemplary people in their church and society where they live. The Expected Results:- (1) That they may stand on their own and take up the

full leadership of their own local churches. (2) That they may teach God's Word to others

systematically. Contributed by Rev. Sunny

Field happenings for August

On June 23rd we took all our believers and seekers to Jagdalpur, Bible mission church which is interested in our IEM ministry. We attended the church service with the Batra believers of that church. Bro. Kirivasan shared the word of God. After the service, we all had a fellowship lunch. Oh how our believers enjoyed and basked in the fellowship of other believers! They just loved it!! Then we took them to Chithrakote waterfalls. Our believers were thrilled seeing God's mighty handiwork and they praised God. We were back home, the same evening. Our believers were very much encouraged. It was our long time dream to take our believers out of their village for exposure. Praise be to God who made this possible. Samuel & Ragini Ebin, Bhatra field

'As singles , how are we going to visit the villages since we don't know the language and places', we wondered, when we came to Raxaul Field. We had our own apprehensions!! Opportunity soon knocked at our door when the Roshni project staff of the Duncan hospital took us along to visit different villages. We were very surprised to see the people receive us with much welcome and acceptance. Especially, the three daughers of Mrs. Sunena Family living in Tumaria Tola became our friends and also are helping us to learn the language. Actually we didn't expect this to happen so soon. But our God is proving each moment and each step that He is always faithful! Miss. Pavithra and Aibahunlang, Raxaul, Bihar

Mr. Bunti Paswan's wife from Tikkulia village was very sick. The sickness became a great disturbance in the family. One day I met Bunti Paswan and he shared all his problems and said, “ I have consulted almost all doctors at Gaur. But there is no healing so far. We are so much discouraged”. I told him to believe on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and receive healing. I prayed and gave her a pain killer. After a week I visited them and to our surprise, she was healed and had begun working in the field. Now Bunti is requesting us to start worship at his residence. Praise the Lord for His healing touch Mr. Hausawmthang, Gaur, Nepal

14 IEM supporters from Singapore under the leadership of Mrs. Tamil Kodi and Mr. Solomon ministered 4 days from 23rd to 26th June in the field and believers and hostel children were blessed by their visit.

On June 20, the team from Singapore conducted a Family retreat at Poovathi Church. 120 people participated and responded saying they like to have more programs like this. The team from Singapore really put their heart to teach not only the Church believers but also the children in both hostels, along with providing gifts and uniform.

The verses in Rana Tharu Calendar are slowly taking root in the hearts of the people who memorize them. Mrs. Sabada of village Bankatti had opened her house some years ago for house worship every Sunday in her village. Not long after that she got baptized and became an active Christian woman in her village and was instrumental to bring many people to worship. Although an illiterate believer she has always shown interest in retaining God's word in her memory. Recently we started Wednesday Bible study meetings in her village. She commented, “Yes, we need to abide in Christ and know more about him, then only he will remain in us”. This was the verse (John 15:4) she had just learned on that Sunday morning from the Church. When we heard this, we were glad that she could not only recite the Bible verse accurately but also that the Word is taking a deeper root in her life when she had understood the meaning of the verse memorized.

On the morning of June 9, my wife was washing utensils outside the kitchen while our eldest daughter was standing beside, watching her. Suddenly, my wife had a strange feeling that the mud above might fall upon them because it had been raining all night. She grabbed our daughter put inside the kitchen and went back to take the utensils. No sooner had she taken the utensils, than the loose mud from a mound above fell on the same place where she was washing the utensils. If she had not gone inside, surely the mud would have completely buried her and our daughter alive!! It was surely a miracle that saved them. My wife and I praised God for His mighty protection and together reminded ourselves of the verse God has given us for 2013, “Fear not”.

Around 50 women participated in the Ladies' meeting in Chandana Chowki village on 14th June, 2013. We really had a good time in discussing God words and sharing one another's personal needs. On 22nd June we had a seeker's meeting in Mr. Ramdhiraj house, our believer in Bhavanipur Village. 35 people attended the seeker's meeting. There is a good progress in our ministries and an open door for the Lord’s work. We distributed Bibles to all those who attended these meetings. Pray for a good response and follow up. In the Apostle Paul’s footsteps…Robert Clark was born in Lincolnshire, England. He was raised in a

godly home and came to know the Lord in his early years. He was trained in commerce and was engaged in a lucrative career prior to his committment for missions. He graduated from the university of Cambridge, with high honours. He joined the CMS and landed in Punjab, India in 1851.

A land, languages, peoples, religions, all equally unknown, surrounded him when he set foot in Punjab. He knew that the secret of success was in seeing matters as the natives perceive and think . So he devoted himself assiduously in the study of the local language and of the people around him. He maintained mutual trust and co-operation with his colleagues.

During his time, Amritsar was a great commercial city. Her bazaars were thronged by men of all the countries under this part of Asia. So he made Amritsar his mission centre for he knew the Gospel preached in Amritsar would, as a consequence, penetrate into regions inaccessible to the missionary.

By 1854, almost twenty-three took baptism whom he trained in evangelism for he early recognised that evangelism was best carried out by native workers. . The converts were encouraged to learn in the best of ways, by himself becoming a teacher of others, and especially of the women of his household. Systematic Scripture instruction, was the first requisite, and he laboured diligently to supply it. He taught the church to deliver the Gospel faithfully, and authoritatively, as a direct communication and command of God to them, and then to leave all results and consequences in the hands of God. In his sermons, he hesitated never to do away with the offence of the Cross and always declared the whole counsel of God, whether men heard or forbore.

In addition, he cultivated a close personal touch with each convert and took time to know the strength and weakness, the special gifts, special circumstances of each individual.. The dire need of education caused him to found schools both in Amritsar and Peshawar. Clark also founded a Christian village, later named as 'Clarkabad' in Punjab (now in Pakistan). He became the first chairman of the Punjab Native Church council established in 1877.

He educated the local church he established, in the mandate of the Great commission and often journeyed to Peshawar, Kashmir, Tibet and the Himalayas with the local converts. He said “though to be stay put at one place is very tempting we must be like Abraham, we must strike our tents, and live by faith, build houses for others to live in, sow for others to reap . It is trying, but if it is God's will we must be content to have no abiding city or continuous work”.

He married Elizabeth Mary Browne, well versed in Sanskrit, Urdu, French, German, and Italian languages and together they pioneered a movement that resulted in the wide establishment of "Medical missions" throughout India. Their son Henry Martyn Clark became a medical missionary in Kashmir.

Clark died on the 16th of May 1900 at Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, at the age of seventy-seven. Source- Internet.

Seminar on Missions

Look up & See!!

The Indian Evangelical Mission Church Ministries organized a mission Seminar in the Englan Range Baptist Churches Fellowship at Riphyim Baptist Church Wokha Dist. Nagaland in April, 2013. IEM church ministies people were the resource persons. The Range Pastors, Deacons, Women leaders and Youth leaders participated in this Seminar. Right after the seminar was over, the Englan Range Baptist Churches Fellowship Pastors decided to support one IEM Missionary giving Rs.5000/- per month. Praise God. Uphold the Englan Range Baptist Churches Fellowship in prayer.

Indian Evangelical Mission and Yikhum Baptist Church signed a MoU on 30th May 2013 at Yikhum Baptist Church Wokha Nagaland for Dhemaji Mission field Assam in the presence of Mission and Deacon Boards. Jesus said, “Behold, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.” John 4:35.

Rev. Mangyang Chang, Nagaland.

We heard now we seeIt was a serene setting… about 60 of us,students from different parts of Tamil Nadu

had gathered to be challenged about what God is doing in our land in a missions conference. Right after the conference, 5 of us went to Chinnoor mission field to see what we had heard!

The joy radiating on the faces of the missionaries who received us in the scenic setting of Chinoor soothed us. The simple lifestyle of the people nestled in the lush green forests in this fast paced 21st century astonished us. We were amazed to see that believers walked many a mile to attend worship on Sundays. We were touched by the commitment of the missionaries who go long distances to meet a person or a handful of believers. We praised God for the churches that stood tall in the midst of a people absorbed in idolatry and spirit worship.

But our hearts ached within to see the unreached masses in the many villages hidden in the dense forests with no viable church nearby to sound the Gospel bells, the need of more missionaries to take the Gospel around and cater to the growing need of pastoral care for the church. Though we were very happy to take part in the evangelistic efforts with the missionaries, yet when the people mistook us for full time missionaries we had to tell them that we were not and that we had come only for an exposure!! We lamented, how rich we are to have the possession of all that is needed for spiritual growth and how poor we are, not to have passed it on to the needy very close to us in our own country!!

The verses that we heard in the conference, Rom 10.14,15 reverberated in us. We came back challenged, refreshed, offering ourselves to have those beautiful feet for the cause of Missions!! God, may you reign in our land.

Christian news around the worldIslamic militants attacked a boarding school in Northeast Nigeria, leaving at least

29 students and a teacher dead. Authorities blame that a radical Muslim group which is opposed to western education has been behind this attack and behind a series of other attacks in this region. 900 Nigerians were killed last year alone.

A New Mexico-based ministry has added eight more languages to its Scripture recordings, which are now available in 733 languages with the potential of reaching three-quarters of the world's population with the Gospel. The new releases represent more than 1.4 million people who now have God's Word in audio available in their heart language.

China's minority people have long suffered neglect and oppression, and since 2009 this has become worse. Minority peoples are losing hope for respect, religious freedom and freedom to continue valued traditions. One such group is the Tibetans, In some parts of the Tibetan world physical life is difficult and situations are harsh; disasters, such as earthquakes, are accelerating Tibetan migration around the world.
