IDENTITÄT Generated Design

Driven by communities like Flickr, Facebook

and MySpace, an artificial world of virtual

identities has emerged. ~IDENTITÄT makes this

world visible in three-dimensional form. Web-

crawler programs search the web and accu-

mulate personal data of digital identities. The

interpretation of this data gives each identity its

unique form, fixed in a generated sculpture.

Thirteen years ago, whilst sitting on my sofa

during my student days in Bremen, I came

up with an idea for a diploma project. In the

meantime, this idea has turned out to be a real

success story. Today, :output is considered to

be the most important global platform avail

able for presenting those works developed at

universities pertaining to the fields of design

and architecture. Each year, more than 1,000

students located in over 40 different countries

submit their works in order to participate in

the :output competition, and each year a jury

chooses the best works for publication in the

:output yearbook.

However, since 1998, not only has :output been

subject to continuous development, but also

the media landscape has experienced dramatic

changes. Thirteen years ago hardly any univer

sity had an internet page that showed the actual

works of its students – not even to mention stu

dents with their own portfolio webpages. There

was no such thing as design blogs, and no social

media for the exchange of ideas. In 1998, it took

almost an eternity to download a reasonably

large image.

It was precisely due to this that we decided to

develop :output in a book form. Thirteen years

ago, it was absolutely impossible to find out

what was happening at universities – unless of

course one made the effort and actually visited

them physically.

Today, things are quite different, and works,

also those developed at universities, are pub

lished more and more on the web. Furthermore,

the internet offers far greater potential for the

exchange ideas.

It was against this background that we

developed the online platform openoutput two

years ago with the aim of enabling students to

create their own online portfolios free of charge.

In the meantime, more than 4,300 projects from

different universities throughout the world can

be found on this platform.

Now we have decided that the time is ripe to

reconceive the :output yearbook, and to esta

blish a stronger connection between the print

version showing the results of the competition

and the online platform.

The book has become smaller and, conse

quently, significantly less expensive. It is thus

hoped that it will be even more attractive,

especially for students.

The real advantage is, however, to be found

in the presentation of the works: One or two

photos accompany each work, together with

a brief project description. Each project has a

five digit numeric code that is used to provide

a quick link to the online platform and a direct

connection to the corresponding work. Here

more comprehensive background information

is available than used to be possible with the

yearbook and, in addition, it is presented in a

multimedia form. More images, texts, videos,

links and downloads can be viewed here,

depending on what the individual author has

uploaded onto the platform.

We are still of the opinion that :output in a

book form is justified and, furthermore, fulfils an

important function – in particular as recognition

of the works of those students chosen by the

jury. It also plays an important role as an archive.

After all, paper is still the most lasting means of

storing data.

Moreover, the link between the book and the

online platform enables us to make the works

available on an even greater scale, and thus

overall provide a better and more comprehen

sive presentation of the individual works.

käUflIch Photography, Book

The book shows women from Dortmund,

Düsseldorf and Essen working as street prosti

tutes. The work focuses on the human beings

who, owing to a combination of portraits and

interviews, become the centre of attention.

In addi tion, photographs depicting where the

women work partially give an impression of

the general atmosphere.

response to a typographic tradition known as

the ‘Irish Type’. The result of this process is Nib,

PRA FORA/OUTWARD is a project providing

children between the ages of 8 and15, living in

the favelas of Brazil, with a chance to depict

their everyday lives using artistic means. In work

shops, simple items such as camera obs cura,

remnants, cartons etc, were used to produce

photos, objects and drawings which were sub

sequently documented in a book.

In the installation „for those who see“ pressure

is created by a loudspeaker located in a rectan

in the air. Upon formation, the vortex rings

move linearly through the air and after a short

while slowly turn into smoke and their strength

de creases.
