CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Strong ties between business development and communityChambersburg Area Development Corp. (CADC) announced a new strategic plan during its Annual Meeting in June. CADC’s plan outlines eight key priorities to guide the economic development corporation in a new direction. These include strengthening the balance sheet, building projects, workforce development, maintaining a strong partnership with the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, providing match funding for infrastructure upgrades to downtown, an investment program, downtown home ownership and membership. CADC also confirmed the closing of land sales to Sheetz and Matrix Development Group at United Business Park off I-81 Exit 24, which laid the groundwork to set the strategic plan in motion. Many elements of the strategic plan have already been set in motion. CADC has negotiated a letter of intent with TST Impreso for the construction of a 100,000 square foot manufacturing building in the United Business Park. CADC also provided a $90,000 loan for b.developed to purchase the Fort Chambers building downtown, and is working to support the Rose Rent Lofts project in a portion of the former Central Junior High building. To support workforce development programs that have a direct impact on workforce readiness, CADC made a pledge at the Annual Meeting to contribute $50,000 to the Coyle Free Library and $15,000 to the United Way of Franklin County’s Stepping Forward Works program. A partnership with CADC and Habitat for Humanity has been formed to target deteriorating and former single family homes in the central core for upgrades with a new initiative, their Home Again program.

I’m excited about the future of the CADC, and our community can look forward to a long and prosperous relationship between the Chamber of Commerce and Chambersburg Area Development Corp.

Leadership seeks to help nonprofitsNonprofit, education, government and business organizations in need of volunteer help on a project may apply for assistance from the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community program.

Part of the experience for participants is completing a service project to enhance teamwork skills while giving back to the community. Past projects include: organizing the Icefest 5K Run, marketing the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Chambersburg, creating a database for veterans burried in Franklin County and more. Participants in the 2016-2017 class will choose their community service projects from submitted proposals.

If your organization would like to submit a request for a project team, please complete a Request for Project Application, available online at www.chambersburg.org/ChamberFoundation.

Proposals must meet the following criteria:• The project must have a definable goal that can be achieved in

less than nine months (October 2016 to May 2017).• The organization has a single contact who will provide

background, materials and support for team members.• Applications are submitted no later than July 22.

The LFC Community Steering Committee will inform organizations by August 10 if their proposal will be forwarded to LFC students for consideration. If so, the contact person will be required to make a 10-minute presentation to the class on September 10. Organizations will be notified by September 12 if their project was selected by a Leadership team. LFC Youth welcomes 25 studentsThe Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth class of 2017 got a jump start on the year with an orientation in May. The 25 sophomore students spent the day getting to know each other with icebreaker activities and learning how different personality styles interact.

The students will continue getting to know each other at a July summer retreat focused on team building. They will begin digging into the curriculum once school begins in September.

Students attend the program at no charge thanks to sponsor Wilson College. The program is managed by Chamber affiliate, the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation.

Coyle breaks ground on new projectIn May, the Coyle Free Library broke ground on the $5.5 million renovation and expansion project of the downtown public library. The library will remain open at a temporary location, 340 N. Second St., called Coyle on Second. The library on Main Street is expected to be completed and reopen in late 2017.

Second Saturdays continue with more music and moviesSecond Saturdays returned this summer on June 11, attracting a large crowd downtown to Chambers Fort Park. The free Second Saturday series begins with Concerts in the Park from 5 to 8 p.m., presented by Volvo Construction Equipment, followed by the Downtown Summer Movie Series at dusk, presented by Summit Health. Both the concerts and movies are held in Chambers Fort Park, located between North Main Street and the Rail Trail and is at the confluence of the Conococheague and Falling Springs Creeks.

Paint a mural for downtown!Downtown Chambersburg Inc.’s mural project is underway and you can contribute! Area artists are invited to create an individual mural to be displayed at various outdoor locations in the downtown area.

1864: The Burning6 to 10 p.m. - Downtown Chambersburg As darkness approaches, the town will transform to 1864 and the story of the town’s ransoming will come to life with a light show. Gov. Wolf signs historic liquor reform bill

The House passed historic liquor reform legislation that Gov. Tom Wolf publicly signed on Wednesday, June 8. On Tuesday, the House voted 157-31 on concurrence in favor of H.B. 1690, which provides for the private sector sale of wine in grocery stores with a restaurant license; allows takeout wine sales in licensed restaurants, bars, hotels, supermarkets and delis; and lets about 14,000 holders of takeout beer licenses to sell up to four bottles of wine; among other improvements to the current state store system. The new law makes no changes to the current sale of liquor and does not close any state stores. Governor Wolf issued a statement calling the bipartisan effort “the most significant step the commonwealth has taken to reform our liquor system in 80 years.” For its part, the PA Chamber has long advocated moving Pennsylvania’s antiquated liquor sales system into the 21st century to give consumers the convenience and choice they overwhelmingly want; and make the state competitive in alcohol sales, in order to keep critical sales revenue in the Commonwealth’s borders each year. Following the governor’s action, PA Chamber President Gene Barr released a statement thanking elected officials for enacting the popular reform legislation and allowing the private sector to responsibly sell wine. “We applaud the governor for signing this important reform legislation into law – which will help keep revenue within our borders and will expand private sector opportunities to responsibly sell alcohol and compete on equal ground with neighboring states,” Barr said. “This effort – which had bipartisan support - shows how the spirit of compromise can bring about positive change in Pennsylvania. The PA Chamber is encouraged by this action and looks forward to working with elected officials to enact other smart, pro-growth policies.”

GIVING BACK

Patriot Federal Credit Union recently partnered with the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Chambersburg Inc. to help raise funds for the Chambersburg Community Mural Project with Isaiah Zagar. The project will feature the creation of two mosaic murals located in downtown Chambersburg. Patriot is providing a $5,000 community challenge donation for a gofundme (online fundraising) campaign. The project has raised more than $20,000 to be used for this project and future downtown art projects.

As Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County continues to grow, so does the need for enhanced print and copy services. Centric Business Systems provided a Sharp machine to Habitat with expanded capabilities. Centric reduced the selling price by $1,000 and made a cash gift to Habitat in the amount of $500. Both organizations belong to the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce and see the benefit of working together and giving back to the community.

First Energy Foundation presented a check for $11,086 as a direct corporate match for funds donated by local employees to the United Way of Franklin County Community Campaign. First Energy has participated as a Pacesetter Company in the past three campaign efforts and is already making plans toward the upcoming campaign effort, which will kick-off at their locations this summer.

During a 10-week period recently, nine teams consisting of more than 50 Patriot Federal Credit Union employees participated in

a “Biggest Loser Challenge” designed to promote and encourage healthier food choices, exercise and ultimately lose weight. The Patriot teams collectively lost a total of 450 pounds, with the winning team called “Mission Slimpossible” losing 6.5 percent of their total weight over the span of the challenge. Patriot employees donated $1 for each pound lost, and along with other donations, gave $613 to the Healthy Communities Partnership of Greater Franklin County.

United Way of Franklin County plans to begin their Pacesetter efforts in late June and will launch their 2016 fundraising campaign officially in September. Patriot Federal Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 to a Patriot Member as part of their Grand Opening Contest. Greg Woods and his wife Barb of Chambersburg walked into the credit union’s Lincoln Way East branch office in May thinking they would get a quick look at the newest branch location and pick up a complimentary Patriot coffee mug for their time. They walked to the teller window, handed over their “Scan & Win” promotion mailer, and ended up walking out of the credit union as the $1,000 grand prize winner! Located at 1536 Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg, the new branch provides members with greater convenience through extended service hours.

Totem Pole Playhouse’s opening night performance of the first play in their four-show subscription series, “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks,” served as a fundraiser for the Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance (CPAA). CPAA is a charitable organization composed of individuals and animal rescue organizations and shelters working together to end the killing of cats and dogs as the means of controlling animal population.

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation recently awarded Wilson College a $27,000 grant to support students age 25 and older who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree and need financial assistance. This marks the 30th year that the Newcombe Foundation has supported mature students at Wilson College. This year’s grant will be split into two funds: $20,000 for the Newcombe Scholarships for Mature Students program and a $7,000 endowment challenge grant for the Charlotte W. Newcombe Endowed Scholarship Fund, which helps to maintain scholarships in the future. Wilson, which matches the awards on a one-to-one basis, enrolls students age 25 and above through two programs: the Single Parent Scholars (formerly Women with Children) program and the adult degree program.

ACNB Bank is pleased to announce Thomas A. Holmes has joined their team as the vice president/trust investment officer. Fayetteville Contractors received a Notice of Bid Award for the construction of the North Chambersburg Improvements Project. The three-part project includes the extension of Parkwood Drive north into Greene Township, reconstruction and extension of St. Paul Drive to intersect with Parkwood Drive; and a series of improvements to the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Norland Avenue. The project will be funded in large part by a $2.4 million PennDOT Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) grant awarded to CHS in 2014.


Tuscarora Mountain Winery recently received two silver medals from Tasters Guild Competition for their Elderberry and No Name this year. Congratulations!

St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church is an affiliate food pantry of South Central Community Action Programs (SCCAP). A significant amount of the donations come from the Lions Club and other churches and groups around the area. These donations currently help serve 156 families through the operations from its Outreach Center every second and third Thursday of each month. Thanks to the local volunteers who donate over 2,300 hours each year by helping out with the operations of the pantry. Totem Pole Playhouse announced their 2016 Sunday Concert Series featuring the musical talents of four local arts organizations. The free concerts are scheduled for select Sunday evenings through early August. Each of the 2016 Sunday Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and lasts an hour. Performances are free and held under the tent located on the west lawn of Totem Pole Playhouse in beautiful Caledonia State Park. Free will offerings will be collected to support the arts organization on stage at each concert. In case of rain, concerts will be held inside Totem Pole Playhouse. Michael E. Kipe from Smith Elliot Kearns & Company, LLC was recently presented with the 2016 Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Hagerstown Community College (HCC) Alumni Association at the college’s recent Honors Convocation. Kipe graduated from HCC in 1999 and carried on to earn his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Salisbury University. Totem Pole Playhouse presented the third annual Totem Pole Playhouse Awards in May for outstanding production and performances by area high schools. One student from each school was honored with the Jean Stapleton Award given to the student who contributed the most to the production of their school’s musicals. Students from all eleven participating high schools took to the Majestic stage throughout the course of the evening with each school performing one production number from their musical. The ceremony was hosted by Totem Pole’s producing artistic director, Rowan Joseph.
