Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Dear Friends,A Happy New Year to you all! I apologise if that sounds rather belated bythe time you read this, but I am writing this on 5 January and haven’t hadthe opportunity to say those words much to you so far.The New Year brings new faces to us. Our new Associate Priest, Yvonne, joins us in January and hopefully she’ll soon feel very much at home withus all here. Yvonne has been appointed so that I can be released from someof my parochial responsibilities in order to make space for the work I’ll haveto do as Area Dean. Yvonne is not a curate in training – she comes withmore experience than that, which will be a great bonus to me.The Director of Music and Organist for St John’s Chipping Sodbury, NickSherwood, will start working with us from 14 April. Nick comes withconsiderable experience and competence and we look forward to havinghim and his wife, Helen, with us.We begin the New Year with quite a lot happening in February. There willbe two Benefice services in February because Bishop Michael will be withus on two consecutive Sundays. He would very much like the Benefice tocome together for the Confirmation service on 10 February to support thosebeing confirmed and he is looking forward to being with us for his TeachingWeekend on 15-17 February. It is a great privilege to have the Bishop withus and I really hope everyone will take part in those two events. It is very easy in parish life to be busy all the time and allow God to besqueezed out. Lent, which begins in February gives us the chance to slowdown and be still before God. There will be an excellent Lent Course runningthis year. I hope you will seriously consider joining the course: it is a wayof nurturing our faith. If you are looking for an opportunity to rekindle your prayer life, or strengthenit, Morning Prayer takes place on Mondays to Thursdays and on Saturdaysand there is the fortnightly meditation group. Anyone is welcome to join inwith these gatherings. You will find all these things that I have mentioned here written of in fullerdetail elsewhere in this month’s Outlook. Happy reading and happy praying!

Meet our new AssociatePriest Greetings from Yvonne

Jane has asked me to write a few lines tointroduce myself. My name is YvonneBrae and I am about to join the SodburyVale Benefice as an Associate Priest. Icame to ministry a little later in life and Ifind myself with an intense sense offulfilment and enjoyment at God’s calling.I am a widow with four grown up childrenand 7 grandchildren, the youngest ofwhich is still only 6 weeks old. Mychildren live in Seattle, Paphos, Londonand Bishops Cleeve (though he will bemoving later this year.) I studied at theWest of England Ministerial TrainingCollege before being ordained in 2008.During my curacy I continued at theUniversity of Gloucestershire in order tocomplete my BA.

I have worked in two parishes coveringthree Churches. One of the Churches, set in an area that figured highly on theIndices of Multiple Deprivation, enjoyedan ecumenical partnership between theAnglican and Methodist Church. Theother was a town centre Church with agathered congregation. I then moved toa larger Church where most Sundays thecongregation numbered around 200.The worship there was a mixture ofliturgy and hymns played on the organand worship group led choruses with amore informal style of leading – all in theone service. My personal taste iseclectic (as you may imagine by now.) Ienjoy all types of Church services. I lovebeing at the Cathedral but am equally athome in a looser structured service. Ibelieve no one person or organisationcan hold the whole understanding ofGod, so for me it’s about the delight offinding God in a great variety of people, places and ways. As I look forward to

being with you my hope for the future isthat we will all grow together in commonenjoyment and respect of one another aswe reflect Christ out into ourcommunities.

2013 Lent Course

Bishop Michael recently published a bookentitled, “Jesus and Peter: Growing infriendship with God.” A study course hasbeen written to use with this book and wehave decided to use it for our Lent course. The Lent course itself will take place onWednesday evenings and be repeated onThursday mornings during Lent in the waywe have usually run the course in the past.Details are shown below. An additionalexciting thing about this course is that itcontinues beyond Easter looking at post-resurrection stories of Jesus and Peter. Itis proposed that House Groups will followthis course after Easter. If you do notbelong to a House Group at the moment, then here is your chance to join one – newgroups will be forming.

Copies of the book will be available to buy(priced around £6.99) in late January andearly February. All the meetings will take place in StJohn’s Church Centre in Wickwar Road.

Diocesan LetterOne of the most striking things about thepeople of our link diocese of WesternTanganyika is their desire for andcommitment to education, childrensometimes walking miles each day to getto school because they know thepossibilities education offers them andtheir community. It should be no surprise therefore that theyhave committed themselves to the buildingof a new school in Kasulu in partnershipwith the Cathedral there to allow studentswho have completed ‘O levels’ to continueto ‘A level’ study and be prepared forhigher education. This is an enormous undertaking for apoor community but one that is beingundertaken with dedication andorganisational skill. Now we have anopportunity to help them complete the nextphase of their building. So far they have built four classrooms. Thenext phase, costing £192,000 will see theconstruction of a further eight classrooms, dormitories, cafeteria, library, laboratory, staff houses… and a bore hole! They have committed to raising half thiscost locally and we have committed tofinding the other half - to change children’slives, to change a community througheducation. The Gloucester Diocesan Board ofFinance have made £45,000 available asa loan to get the project moving andBishop Michael has designated thisproject as the focus of this year’sEpiscopal Collections. That leaves around£30,000 that we are seeking to raise fromthe parishes, schools and communities ofthe diocese. That might seem a largeamount but if every parish in the diocesecommitted just £100 we would more than

meet this target and if every church schooldid the same….Once established the school will be selfsupporting, so this is a an amazingopportunity to make a difference to acommunity for the long term, and becauseof our links with the Diocese and throughour mission partners working there, to doso in the knowledge that the money will beproperly and wisely spent. Will your parish, your school, yourcommunity be a partner in this, with thecommunities of this diocese and ofWestern Tanganyika? More details will bedistributed soon and information can alsobe obtained from the Revd Debbie Formanon [email protected] or01386 830302.From the Archdeacon of Cheltenham,The Venerable Robert Springett

Journeying TogetherJourneying together is something wemuch need in the Anglican Communionand the Church of England at the presenttime. Because the Church is made up offallen human beings like ourselves, sometimes it finds itself in conflict, such ashas been happening with us, not least withthe issue of women bishops, but with othermatters too. We do not always seem to begoing in the same direction. Certainly wedon’t seem to be on the same road. ButJesus is calling us to come to him. He isthe one to whom we all, despite ourdifferences, are trying to journey. His callto us at the present time is, I am sure,“Travel together”. In travelling togetherthere is encouragement and strength.

There is a local version of this journeyingtogether that is crucial for the mission ofGod in our diocese. Here we are notdivided by conflict (praise the Lord forthat!), but we do sometimes seem to begoing our own ways, unaware of thejourneys of others, making our plans anddeveloping our mission independently ofone another. But a diocese is aboutbelonging together and journeyingtogether, for both the mission of God andthe vision of God are what we seek incommon. In 2013 every parish is invitedto explore our shared vision, strategy andobjectives through Journeying Together. Please join in. In our travelling in stepthere will be encouragement and strength.
