INTELLIGENT MOTION FROM THE CLEVER CAR COMPANYThose in-the-know have long recognised Mitsubishi to be the clever car company. Over the years we have beenquietly innovative in terms of automotive engineering: our name is synonymous with both road-hugging andterrain-taming four-wheel drive technology; we’re known for our intelligent use of space (it’s not widely knownbut we were the very first manufacturer to introduce a layout now known as the MPV and we pioneered theconcept of tall cars with a small footprint); and we’ve approached the hybrid concept from a totally differentangle, resulting in a vehicle which has revolutionised EV sales in every country where it is available.

This Mitsubishi ingenuity is personified in the Outlander. For starters, this is no MPV in racy clothingsince every single Outlander benefits from Mitsubishi’s electronically controlled four-wheel drive.This AWC (All Wheel Control) system offers three selectable four-wheel drive modes, and is an ‘ondemand’ system, which means that the car automatically calculates the optimum amount of torquerequired at each wheel, depending upon driving conditions. So, in 4WD ECO the Outlander operatesin front wheel drive for fuel-efficient driving but, if the system detects a deterioration in roadconditions, torque is automatically allocated to the rear wheels to help maintain safe progress. Forimproved traction on slippery road surfaces 4WD AUTO controls the distribution of power to allfour wheels, as well as enhancing stability whilst towing under all road conditions. To cope withmore challenging off-road terrain such as mud, sand or wet grass, 4WD LOCK increases the amountof torque sent to the rear wheels to ensure maximum traction. As you’d expect from a Mitsubishi,this is an SUV with a four-wheel drive system man enough to actually take you off the road.

In the Outlander, comfort is the name of the game. It is refined and relaxing for driverand passengers alike, with little noise from engine, road or wind whatever your speed.Handling is predictable, thanks to a wide track and a chassis designed for accuracy, whilst its suspension is forgiving over bumpy roads and provides a notably polished ride;steering is light and there’s always plenty of grip and traction, even in two-wheel drive.

The 6-speed manual transmission is fine and precise, and the automatic equallyimpressive, with steering column-mounted shift paddles providing a manual option for when the mood takes.

A 2.2 litre engine delivers decent punch (147 bhp and plenty of torque to hustle alongwhen you feel the desire to put pedal to metal) with a frugal and clean running nature:manual models with their Auto Stop & Go function deliver over 53 mpg and automaticsin excess of 48 mpg. Furthermore, an Eco Drive Support System helps to maximiseenvironmentally responsible driving pleasure at the flick of a switch, instigating energysaving controls for the engine (where it prohibits excessive acceleration), air conditioningand four-wheel drive systems (by only utilising 4WD when the wheels slip).

AND A VERY SAFE PAIR OF HANDSAwarded the full five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests, theOutlander is undeniably a safe pair of hands. It features a stabilityand traction control system which identifies and corrects anyoversteer or understeer caused by overly ambitious acceleration,as well as particularly clever brakes which include ABS with EBD(adjusts the loading on each individual wheel to accommodatethe location of weight), power assisted emergency braking, and an Emergency Stop signal System which automatically engagesthe hazard warning lights.

But, should the worst happen, the Outlander has been designedand engineered to meet the most stringent safety requirements

whilst improving pedestrian protection, minimising damage tolighter vehicles and reducing repair costs in the event of low-speedimpacts – a tall order which has been met by a variety of structuralmeasures. For example, a particularly high proportion of high-tensile steel is used to increase body strength whilst keeping theweight down, and energy absorption is optimised with a reinforcedgirdle body construction which, in combination with additionalunderfloor reinforcement measures, is so effective in dispersingimpact energy that Outlander occupants are protected whilstdamage to a smaller car is reduced. Further occupant protection is provided by no fewer than seven airbags.

A SETTING FOR CALM AND RELAXATIONMitsubishi vehicles have always been built for durability, with a typically Japanese emphasis on the use of long-term quality materials, but there is no denying that each year the Outlander’s interior becomes a little moreEuropean: surfaces are ever more tactile and gloss black styling accents look truly sophisticated. It’s quiet too,thanks to the extensive measures to reduce noise and vibration, and the attention to detail is typical of Mitsubishi:wipers automatically adapt to your speed and door mirrors are heated for clear vision on damp mornings, as well as being linked to the central door locking system to automatically fold neatly out of harm’s way when parked.

Of course, it’s the luxuries which make travelling a genuine pleasure: heated seats you might expect, but it’s theheated steering wheel which is a real joy on chilly days. Dual zone climate control air conditioning is standard on allmodels, the multi-function navigation system and DAB tuner are state-of-the-art, and the controls for Bluetooth®and audio are mounted on the steering wheel for safety.*

BEST SEATS ALL ROUNDSize matters, of course, but probably the Outlander’s most appealing aspect is its incredibleversatility. The front row of seats are perfectly set at hip height for easy access, whilst the secondrow recline for greater comfort, slide backwards and forwards a full 25cms* to benefit people orparcels at will, split 60:40 and fold-and-tumble forwards. Finally, the third row* of seats aredesigned to disappear individually into the floor, simply and swiftly, to leave a vast and completelyflat loading area. Of course, that elevated seating position gives a panoramic view, and everyonegets to enjoy it with progressively higher seat squabs the further back you sit.
