INT. CLASSROOM. MORNING.

Focus on Mr. Ankeny, mid-twenties, dressed in a plaid blue-and-

white striped shirt, sitting at his desk, pencil in his ear,

looking slightly disheveled, hair wild, and a slight scruff. Heleans with his head on his hand, and his eyes are struggling to

stay awake. A pile of papers surround him. Behind, tacked into

the wall sits a giant snowflake, random drawings from students,

little hand-holding people cutouts. A clock behind him ticks,

and it shows 6:00AM. He holds in his hands a note.

NARRATOR (V.O.)! ! Mr. Ankeny had taught middle school for nearly four! !  months. He arrived early, he left late, and he slowly! ! fell into the slow routine of a teacher’s existence.

INSERT:

A sheet of paper—a ransom note, with cut out magazine letters

that reads: “If you want you’re student back, you’ll do what we

ask...”

NARRATOR (CONT’D)! ! But on the morning of January Fourth, he followed the! ! instructions of a note that would forever change his

! ! teaching career. When he first read it the day before! ! he did not know what to do.

CUT TO:

Mr. Ankeny, at his desk, holding the paper, looking very

similar, but in a green-and-white striped shirt. Note in hand,

with a red pen looking it over.

MR. ANKENY! ! What in the world am I going to do? Ooh. Typo.

INSERT:

The ransom note, close-up, with a red circle around the “you’re”

corrected to “your.” Pan down to the end of the note that says,

in the same magazine letters, “Be in your classroom at 6:15AM,

1.4., and be ready for outer space.”

INT. CLASSROOM. MORNING

Charles and Samantha enter the class. Charles is dressed as a

savvy scholar, with his hair parted, a red and blue sweater vest

over a sharply pressed white shirt. He wears khaki pants thatare pressed with a severe crease mid-leg, and brown loafers. In

one hand he carries his bookbag, the other his skateboard.

Samantha is dressed similarly, in preppy, slightly masculine,

but still fashionable dress. Black shorts over tights, and a

purple dress shirt.

CHARLES! ! Mr. Ankeny, you don’t look so good.

Mr. Ankeny, holding the note at arms length, looks panicked. The

clock behind him says 6:14PM. He slowly looks over at Charles.

MR. ANKENY! ! I can’t believe it’s you, Charles.

SAMANTHA ! ! ! (surprised)! ! Mr. Ankeny, we’re the first ones to class every! !  morning.

MR. ANKENY

! ! ! (serious)! ! Not this early.

CHARLES! ! Well, no, but you said we could come in early to work! ! on our project. You said yesterday, after Richmond was! ! called out of class.

[PART TWO: CLIMAX AND TURNING POINT]

AFTER FINDING ANOTHER NOTE TAPED ON THE WHITE BOARD, THE TWO

STUDENTS [SAMANTHA AND CHARLES] AND MR. ANKENY BEGIN A SCAVENGER

HUNT THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL. DURING THIS TIME, WE ALSO FLASH TO

THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE RANSOM NOTE, RICHMOND HIMSELF [WHO WAS

NEVER KIDNAPPED AT ALL]. HIS MOTIVE IS NOT YET REVEALED, BUTHERE AT THE CLIMAX THE STUDENTS AND MR. ANKENY HAVE A CLASH THAT

COULD BREAK THEIR TEAM SPIRIT, OR UNIFY THEM IN A FINAL EFFORT

TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY.

EXT. ROOF OF SCHOOL. DAY.

INSERT:

Close up of another note, same magazine cut-out look, reading:

“Spin as you may, you slip and let go. The faster you rotate,

the farther you throw.”

CHARLES is sitting on the edge of the room, looking dismally

sad. He swings his feet and hangs his head low. SAMANTHA comes

to his side, while MR. ANKENY is pacing behind the two. MR.

ANKENY is holding the latest note from the kidnapper. All

three’s clothes are tattered and worn, as if they’ve been

through quite the ordeal.

SAMANTHA ! ! If we give up now, we might as well call him dead.

CHARLES! ! (adamantly)! ! If we keep looking, we’re going to kill ourselves.! ! This is crazy. We’ve made no progress at all. We’re! ! spinning in circles.

SAMANTHA ! ! Like centrifugal force...

CHARLES

! ! You know what, I’m out. We don’t have a chance at! ! rescuing him. And, in the process, we’re destroying! ! ourselves.

SAMANTHA ! ! Out where?

CHARLES

Page 5: Outer Space (Full Script)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/outer-space-full-script 5/8

! !  Are you joking? I’m out of this hunt, this game,! !  whatever we’re doing. I’m not saving Richmond. I don’t! ! care if he lives or he dies.

MR. ANKENY

! ! Then go.

CHARLES! ! I’m going!

CHARLES rises from the edge of the room and begins walking

around the roof.

MR. ANKENY! ! Just leave.

CHARLES! ! I am, I’m looking for the ladder!

MR. ANKENY! ! Go! It’s on your left.

CHARLES! ! I’m trying. Still don’t see it.

MR. ANKENY! ! (quietly)

! ! You know, you’re a sorry excuse for a seventh grader.

CHARLES! ! You think you’re better?! !MR. ANKENY! ! (confused)! ! Seventh grader?

CHARLES! !  A teacher who lost his student? A man who’s failed at

! ! his one responsibility? Teach students, show them the! !  way, that’s your job. Inspire, educate, and provide! ! them the means to succeed. You think you’ve done that?

MR. ANKENY! ! I’ve tried. I only lost 1 of 70; that’s not too bad.

CHARLES

Page 6: Outer Space (Full Script)

! ! Well I don’t see it.! ! (pause)

SAMANTHA ! ! (quietly)

! ! I do.

CHARLES! !  And you just lost two. That’s 3 percent if you round! ! up. I’m gone.

MR. ANKENY! ! (surprised)! ! Oh, hey Samantha. Forgot you were up here.

SAMANTHA

! ! Charles, wait. We’re falling apart. But that’s exactly! !  what we need. We need to let go. Be open to anything.

She walks to the edge of the roof and begins to spin slowly in a

circle with her arms outstretched.

SAMANTHA (cont’d)! ! The note says slip and let go. If you spin in a circle! ! on the edge, then let go of something, it’d fly! ! outward in a straight line, that’s centrifugal force.! !  And if it flew outward, it’d be headed toward the

! ! greenbelt!

Quick zoom to the greenbelt, where RICHMOND is behind a bush,

tied up in duct tape. He struggles to free himself. Above, a

rock sits precariously tied with a string, about to roll down

the hill onto him.

SAMANTHA (cont’d)! ! There’s Richmond! Let’s go!

MR. ANKENY

! ! Wait.! ! (dramatic pause)! ! Charles, are you with us? Are you ready to let go,! ! open your arms, spin and throw yourself into this?

CHARLES! ! I’m back!

Page 7: Outer Space (Full Script)

MR. ANKENY! ! 100%. Full bore. No regrets. Mind like a parachute.! ! Ready for action. All pistons firing. No holding—–

SAMANTHA

! ! (interrupting)! ! Uh, the rock’s about to roll. I think he’s in.

MR. ANKENY! ! Okay, let’s go.

Resolution and Conclusion

[Continues from above point story]

Upon arriving at RICHMOND, the 2 students and MR. ANKENY quickly

untie him and disassemble the boulder trap. Everyone seems

relieved.

MR. ANKENY! ! Richmond, you’re a free man. Thank you for doing all! ! of this.

CHARLES! ! Thank you?

MR. ANKENY! ! Yeah, thanks Richmond, for setting up this whole

! ! scavenger hunt, feigned kidnapping, everything.

SAMANTHA ! ! Mr. Ankeny, we’re not tracking you right now. It’s! ! like a poetic QOTD. I don’t get it.

RICHMOND! ! It was all a ploy. Mr. Ankeny’s been in on it the! !  whole time.

CHARLES

! ! (furious)! !  Are you kidding me? You set us up?

MR. ANKENY! ! Well, when you put it that way, it sounds kind of! !  wrong. I (pause), put together a creative lesson.

SAMANTHA

Page 8: Outer Space (Full Script)

! ! For us?

MR. ANKENY! ! Yeah. That bit on the roof, the being open and free.! ! The spinning and letting go. That was for you.

RICHMOND! ! You guys need to relax. You’re the biggest geeks in! ! school.

At that, the bell rings, signaling the end of the school day.

Students pour out of the school, and begin passing by the four

main characters. All the students look cheerful, while SAMANTHA

and CHARLES are still perplexed.

MR. ANKENY

! ! I just want you two to be open to new ideas. I want my! ! students to believe the world can be better than it! ! is, if they see it from another angle, and act in! ! different ways. You two changed today, you learned to! ! see and think from alternative angles. That’s the best! ! lesson I can teach you.

CHARLES! ! (quietly)! ! I see now.

Camera moves slowly away from the students. They move throughthe crowd back toward the school, 3 students and a teacher,

going against the flow of the masses, and they look happy.
