2. 2. Local History & Legends The first English child born in the New World was Virginia Dare of Fort Raleigh in 1587. Fort Raleigh would later become known as The Lost Colony of Roanoke after all 115 colonists mysteriously vanished from the island. Orville and Wilbur Wrights historic flight occurred just south of Kitty Hawk. Blackbeard the Pirate met his demise at the hands of Lt. Maynard of the Royal Navy near the present day town of Hatteras. His ship the Queen Annes Revenge was just recently found off the coast. Blackbeard is rumored to have buried a vast treasure in the area prior to his death. Wild Ponies near Duck are the descendants of Spanish Mustangs which survived early shipwrecks. A cemetery on Ocracoke island jut west of Hatteras is officially British soil. It contains the graves of British sailors washed ashore after the wreck of the HMS Bedfordshire during WW2. The Grey Man of Hatteras is a local Ghost Legend. Its said that a shadowy figure walks the beaches of Hatteras Island to warn the islands inhabitance that a major hurricane is approaching. The waters surrounding the Outer Banks are known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic. Over 3,000 shipwrecks decorate the coastline, some are still visible from shore today. Some of the darkest night skies in the US are found in the Outer Banks making it ideal for Star Gazing. Sea Turtles nest on the beaches of Hatteras Island from May September. The Average High/Low Temperature in late August is 83/70.

Hatteras National Seashore The first national seashore in the country covers 70 miles of shoreline and 30,000 acres. ($10 For Crabbing License 16+) Pea Island Nature Preserve This Wildlife Refuge has more than 400 species of birds and is a prime nesting area for many species of sea turtle. Within 30 Minutes Hatteras Lighthouse - At 208-feet this is the tallest lighthouse in the US (Tickets can be purchased to climb it both during the day and at night).
