Homeowners are moving outdoors, and landscape architects and builders

are helping them create leisure spaces that are not only luxuriously

appointed and welcoming but which are also professionally equipped and

functional. At the center of the action is the outdoor kitchen--long gone are

days of the simple barbecue grill! Today’s top designers and builders are

crafting amazing outdoor kitchens that rival--and sometimes surpass--

indoor types. If you need ideas, you’ve come to the right place. The world’s

elite outdoor kitchen designers and builders have opened their portfolios for

you to view their best work--and we thank them for allowing us to share

their concepts with you. We guarantee that as you flip through the following

pages, you will be inspired to make your own wish list.

Don’t be left behind: the party is moving outdoors!

Homeowners are discovering that the once

untapped space outside their home is actually a

fabulous place to entertain family and friends--and at the

forefront of this movement is the outdoor kitchen.

Homeowners are creating functional yet inviting lifestyles

on the other side of their sliding glass doors. Studies show that

outdoor kitchens are becoming one of the most desired backyard

renovations--in fact, over 75 percent of homes in America include

at least some type of grill or smoker. On decks and patios and

under pergolas and open rooms, your neighbors are adding

everything from simple grills to fully-equipped food prep stations.

It is no longer a rarity to see indoor kitchen accessories

outdoors. And, as the demand for these types of products

increases, manufacturers are producing all types of appliances

that are not only visually attractive, but also UL-listed for

outdoors (the electrical outlets should be Ground Fault

Circuit Interpreter, or GFCI).

The Amenities

Before determining what type of outdoor kitchen you want

for your home, you have to decide how you will use it. Let your

personality steer you in the right direction. Do you often throw

big parties or do you prefer more intimate affairs?

The next step is to make a wish list. What do you want in your

kitchen? Don’t hesitate: put

everything on the list. When you

hire a professional landscape

architect or designer to develop

the project, your list will act as a

guide. Over the years, the selection

of outdoor kitchenware has

most certainly be obtained. Here are a few of the more

popular choices:

Flooring

When it comes time to choose a floor for your

outdoor kitchen, keep one thing in mind: safety.

Because you will be moving around as you prepare

and serve your guests, you need a non-slick surface

underfoot. Stylish choices are also safe additions to any

room; they include tumbled pavers, travertine, exposed

aggregate, brick, and flagstone. Concrete is another

attractive selection, plus it’s inexpensive and can be

colored and/or stamped to match natural materials

and your home’s architecture.

A luxury feature that many homeowners include

in their outdoor kitchens is one that must be done

before the floor is installed: radiant heating. When the

weather is not quite cozy, a warm floor underfoot is a

treat your guests will appreciate over and over. Talk to

your contractor in the early stages of development in

order to make sure this option is possible for your

outdoor kitchen.

Cabinets/Storage Drawers

You can never have enough cabinet and drawer

space--especially outdoors. The whole idea behind

an outdoor kitchen is convenience: everything you

need for backyard dining should be at your fingertips

so you don’t have to return to the house repeatedly to

obtain necessary items. Think about how you plan to

use the kitchen and convey that information to your

designer, who will suggest the right amount and

configuration of cabinets and

drawers.

Many outdoor kitchens feature

stainless steel accessories because

the material is durable and can

handle the elements. Some

homeowners choose cabinets made

of hard-wearing woods like teak

and cypress while others want the

best of both worlds and choose

faux wood--they get the look of

real wood along with the long-

lasting beauty of a manmade

material.

Countertops

Kitchen countertops serve a

multitude of purposes: catchalls,

prep areas, and dining nooks,

to name a few. However, the

countertop is one of the best ways

to add pizzazz to your outdoor

kitchen setting. There are a variety

of countertop materials, but most

designers suggest outdoor-graded

ceramic tile, sophisticated natural

stone like granite, travertine, and

marble, as well as concrete because

they can handle extreme weather.

Don’t be turned off by concrete’s
