There are many ways to add shade to your outdoor space. You could go traditional, what

everybody else has...or you could try something new and unusual. Here at Pacific Shade Sails

we like to create shade using new and innovative shade solutions. When we started this

company we only offered one choice, shade sails. Now after 9 years in the business, we have

several shade options, all unique and cool in their own way.

Today we are spending a lot of time creating great shade with a product called SkySpan

umbrellas. These are not your typical umbrellas...oh no...these are beautiful structures that

look and feel like an umbrella. Originated in Australia and now licensed to be made in Georgia,

SkySpan umbrellas are made out of steel, aluminum and the canopies are a pvc membrane.

They are rated at 75mph when open and 95mph when closed. With this is a product, you can

add lighting, cooling, heating and logos to the canopy.

We have installed these at both residential and commercial locations. They are gaining in

popularity as the world gets to know them better. There are many colors to choose for the

frame and canopies.

gone As the ever-present drought continues to loom over most of California,

many residents are making the decision to do away with their water-

hogging lawns. But what are the alternatives?

Sophie Sears from Cal Wild Landscape Design collaborates closely with

Ben Huffines at Environmental Landscape to provide solutions for

customers looking for water-saving landscapes.

Tearing out your lawn can give you a blank slate, repurposing

how you use your outdoor areas. Your yard doesn't have to be

all plants . Rocks and other hardscapes provide dimension to

your yard and offer low maintenance.

For front yards, consider how you want to use your space. You may want to consider adding a pathway for better access to your home

or even a seating area for relaxing out front while you watch the kids play or visit with neighbors.

drought tolerant plants. Their simple, low mainte-

nance designs use a variety of natural materials,

rocks and stone walls. Environmental Landscape pro-

vides the construction and installation of the designs.

Ben and Sophie work together with their clients

throughout the project ensuring everyone is on the

same page collaborating each step of the way on the

best possible solution for their clients.

It’s ok to keep some lawn. A low or no-mow California native sod provides

a great alternative to those not willing to ditch their green lawns. This

native sod can be left to grow on its own or mowed like a traditional turf

lawn. Once established, it only needs to be watered a couple times a

week to keep its deep, green color. Native sod does well in partial shade or

full sun and recovers well from occasional wear. Its medium leaf texture

provides a deep glossy color that is also tolerant to cold temperatures.

The Delta Blue Grass

Company out of

Stockton, CA grows

the sod locally and

distributes the

product throughout

California.

Furniture

A well designed outdoor space is both beautiful and functional.

When planning your outdoor areas consider how you will use

your space. Choose accent pieces that can double as storage for

frequently used items. Having these items conveniently stored

outside limits hauling everything back and forth.

An outdoor storage cabinet assists to discretely

stow away pool towels, sunscreen, hats and other

pool items. This coffee table wins an award for

extreme multi-purpose use! It can be used as a

coffee table, extra seating and storage. Garden

stools can also serve different functions. Use them

as end tables, a coffee table or extra seating.

Year Round

OUTDOOR LIVING

Darrell & Ann Webster wanted

a place to entertain family and

friends. With 8 children of their

own and 34 grandchildren they

needed a space to be large

enough to accommodate big

groups and also be kid-friendly.

Their son-in-law ,Casey Cox, led

the vision and teamed up with

some of his past colleagues from

when he participated in several

backyard renovation TV shows.

The result, an entertainer’s

dream backyard. The Webster’s

new outdoor space boasts

several areas for entertaining

and hosting parties. Having the

ability to use the space all year

round was also on their wish list.

evening dinners. The tile fireplace creates a stately, focal point at the edge of

the patio. Just a few steps down the from

the patio, a huge playground structure sits

beside a large pool equipped with a grotto

and slide providing hours of entertainment

for the kids. Don’t forget about the s'mores.

A wood burning fire

Welcome to a new series of articles

about great outdoor dining

experiences! For this first article, I

thought, what better place to write

about than my own back yard? After

all, I spend most of my free time

enjoying it with friends and family.

Last summer, I decided to give my

outdoor space a makeover and

provide that great al fresco

experience. Ahhhh, my own

personal paradise where I could

entertain and enjoy my favorite

foods al fresco. Nature provided a

beautiful template to start with; I

just wanted to make it my own retreat from the stresses of life. I set out to create a resort-like look and

feel by incorporating bright orange, aqua, crisp white and Mediterranean blue colors.

The lounge area is a special space to

enjoy a snack, beverage and some

great conversation. It’s set apart by a

vibrant orange and white chevron

rug, a neutral love seat, two club

chairs and a table.

To add even more color, I repurposed some old plant pots by spray painting them hues of blue and

orange.

Page 19: Outdoor Galore Magazine Summer issue 2015

At night, lighting brings the space to life. Large aqua blue

lanterns provide a beautiful glow that is also romantic and

practical. I use LED candles to avoid any mishaps with children

and pets. Desserts and a post-meal drinks are best enjoyed in

this space.

I hope you enjoyed this first article about outdoor dining!

suggestions on places to go, email me at

and enjoy some good food, family and friends! Michelle

The dining area is a large rectangular table with sling chairs and an

umbrella, perfect for serving BBQ meals. I repurposed my worn dining

set by buying a bright printed tablecloth with coordinating colors and

put new fabric on the sling chairs.

Grilling chicken, beef, pork or even salmon with corn on the cob

or mixed veggies as side dishes make quick and easy dinners. I like

to grill some extra food on Sunday and serve throughout the

week for lunches and dinners—it makes weeknights a lot less

stressful.

white, sea blue and green

bulbs provide a perpetual

party atmosphere.

Shade screens are something most people don’t think about until

the sun goes down and they are left to fry in the heat. I wanted to

show people how they could easily make a shade screen to provide

more shade on their patios. This photo was taken at 4:30 in the

afternoon. The screen not only provided shade, but it cooled down

that space tremendously.

I made this screen out of 1-1/2” PVC Pipe and fittings. I then painted it

with all purpose paint, then added shade material. You can use all

types of fabric for this project, it can even be curtains as long as you

use 100% Polyester. Shade cloth would be the best option.

I found these Adirondack love seat and chairs on a local Facebook

buying/selling page. The seller was asking for offers. I offered $50

and we settled on $60 plus delivery to my house!

Here is what I did to them…. 1. One of the boards was missing on a chair, so I cut an old

fence board I had to size and screwed it in.

2. Using 80 grit sandpaper, I gave it a good sanding with an

electric sander.

3. Next, I blew off the dust with an air compressor and

then wiped them down with soap and water.

4. Using Minwax dark walnut stain and a rag, I stained

all three pieces.

5. Lastly, I sprayed a thin coat of polyurethane to

seal it. Julie Iredell from Jules Jewels Repurposed Goods & DIY Ideas

The average patio cover can provide more pain than pleasure. With a typical low-pitched patio roof you can count on

having unwelcome leaks, debris accumulation, and eventual rot problems. Most covers trap summer heat and barbecue

fumes. Sight lines are reduced when sitting on the patio. Natural light is blocked from reaching inside the house. All of this

trouble is a high price to pay for some weather protection.

But not anymore! We are proud to introduce the SkyLift Roof Riser Hardware.

SkyLift roof riser hardware solves all major problems associated with typical low-slung patio cover designs by RAISING

THE ROOF to float over an existing house roof. Now you can build a patio cover you will actually enjoy using!

No more low-slope problems

Expanded view and natural light

Better air circulation

Excellent weather protection

Increased natural light and airflow

Higher roof pitch reduces leaks and debris accumulation

Gutter systems undisturbed, easy to maintain

Patio cover pitch can match slope of existing house roof

Uses standard roof jack flashing for water tight roof installation

Engineered bracket hardware provides structural integrity
