Discussion of working groups

As a result of the survey sent to members for comment and discussion yesterday with Commission members the following was decided:

OUTCOMES FROM THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL COMMISSION MEETING

- all working group member lists to be reviewed and updated where necessary

- Chairman of STC to draw up a formalized structure and procedure for the working groups

- The frequency of working group meetings to be left to the descretion of the Chairperson of each group with a minimum of 2 meetings per year.

- The number of members on each working group will not be restricted. All volunteers will be

welcomed.

Position paper on fruit juice nutrition policy

- Approved paper in general subject to further discussion at combined CL-STC

- Agreed to support addition of actual GI figures for fruit juices in the document. However, as there was concern to some of the figures, it was agreed for members of STC to submit any documentation that they have access to on the GI of fruit juices to Bill STINSON for collation by the end of September.

- Discussed positive publications on the health benefits of fruit juices:- United Kingdom food standards agency

- Success of Five a Day logo

- Nutrient Profiling for childrens’ diets

- USA FDA and HHC workshop on perspectives on marketing, self-regulation and childhood obesity. Healthy beverages include water, seltzer and greater than 50% real juice.

Pesticides issues

- EU reduces MRLs - STC supported a proposal to build up a

pesticides/insecticides database of all national and regional regulations to be controled by the IFU

- Suggestions to encourage processors to obtain documentation from growers on pesticides used

1) Approval of the General Standard for fruit juices by CAC

- CCMAS still to endorse the inclusion of analytical methods

- CCFL to approve footnote that processing aids with allergic potential are subject to ingredient declaration

- CCPR to clarify MRLs for processed fruits

2) CCFACCCFAC approved proposal made by IFU/Task Force:- Coconut water to be considered as a fruit juice- Footnote for sulphites (only for dispensers and according to

national legislation) - Polydimethylsiloxane as a processing aid- Include isinglass, sodium and potassium caseinates as

processing aids (in case carry over ingredient declaration necessary)

- Proposed maximum level for tin 150 mg/kg for canned beverages (ongoing discussion to lower this level)

OUTCOMES FROM THE COMMISSION ON METHODS OF ANALYSIS MEETING

The Commission on Methods of Analysis has concentrated its activities in the following areas:

An extensive revision of the methods has taken place. This will allow the methods to be placed in the private area of the IFU website in the future.

New methods and recommendations have also been prepared.

OUTCOMES FROM THE COMMISSION ON METHODS OF ANALYSIS MEETING

A method for Artificial colours by TLC (No 24) and one recommendation for high intensity sweeteners (Rec.8) have been approved.

Two further recommendations, one for Sensory assessment and the other for Tristimulus Colour Measurement, need slight modification prior to publication.

OUTCOMES FROM THE COMMISSION ON METHODS OF ANALYSIS MEETING

A collaborative study for the quantification of limonin (a bitter material) has been undertaken. Although the previous protocol had been amended, which improved the method’s performance, the data were still not acceptable. Further evaluations will have to take place.

A method to determine the colour of hazy juices has been identified, which will be collaboratively assessed next year.

Next year’s activities

A method for the quantification of low levels of polyols in fruit juices and one for the detection of artificial colours by HPLC will be carried out.

Revision of the methods handbook will be completed.

Proposal of new categories

Based on the proposal of new categories (Observer and Media) PRMC came to the following conclusions:

- Media category will be considered as associate member (2 000 Euros flat fee/year)

- IFU President can allow potential members to be Observers for one event (attending internal meetings free of charge).
