I am excited for the teams selected and look forward getting to know them as we prepare for the journey ahead of us. There is so much to do in a short time but I know these groups will be ready and be great representatives for District 5490.” Said Alex McEachern. ”We had a great slate of candidates to choose from and we are fortunate to have wonderful young professionals on both teams to represent Rotary, our District and Arizona” said team leader Charlie Tegarden.

Reach Within to Embrace Humanity

Saturday September 17th the GSE committee and outbound team leaders to South Korea and Taiwan met at Landscape Mart in Peoria to interview candidates for the upcoming Group Study Exchanges. Alex McEachern will be traveling as team leader to District 3590 in South Korea March 8, 2012 through April 9th and Charlie Tegarden will be visiting District 3520 in Taiwan April 1, 2012 through April 30th each with a team of 4 non-Rotarians.

DG REMARKS

FOR OCTOBER

OCTOBER

IS

VOCATIONAL

SERVICE

MONTH

October is Vocational Service Month—Vocational Service focuses on:

• Adhering to and promoting the highest ethical standards in all occupations

• Recognizing the value of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians

• Contributing one’s vocational talents to meeting the needs of the community During October, Rotary clubs are encouraged to focus on this

important avenue of Rotary service. Consider dedicating at least one meeting to discussing Vocational Service and plan a project or other activity to carry out through the year. Following are some suggested activities for clubs to consider: • Devote a meeting in October to examining Vocational Service,

including The Four-Way Test and The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions.

• After expanding members’ awareness, solicit their input in planning projects for the remainder of the year.

• Introduce a “classification talk” series in which each member gives a five-minute talk on his or her vocation. These presentations give members the chance to learn the inner workings of jobs other than their own, including the various problems that arise and the solutions used to address them.

• Present a vocational award to someone in the community who has exemplified outstanding professional achievement and high ethical standards. Promote the presentation in the community, and consider making it an annual event each October.

• Help young people prepare for their careers by sponsoring a character building project, career day, job shadowing day, or mentorship program.

• Support professional development in the community by sponsoring a professional networking event or workshop, or start a career counseling program to help unemployed or underemployed adults compete in the job market.

• Have club members volunteer their vocational skills on a community or international service project. Many volunteer opportunities can be found on ProjectLINK, an online database that allows Rotary clubs to publicize projects in need of assistance. For more ideas, consult An Introduction to Vocational Service (255-EN) or visit www.rotary.org. If you have questions or success stories to share, contact RI staff at [email protected].

Rotary Club of Anthem Helps Humane Society of Joplin, Missouri

In early June, the Rotary Club of Anthem initiated a find raising

project to help the Humane Society of Joplin, MO in the wake of the catastrophic tornado that struck them in May. The money would pay for the medications they acquired to treat the nearly 600 displaced, homeless and injured animals in their care.

Our efforts raised $900, including the greatly appreciated contribution from the Sun City West Rotarians. We applied for a District Simplified Grant of $900 on August 9th and expect to receive their decision within the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, we decided to send an initial check for $500 to Joplin immediately. We arranged with the Rotary Club in Joplin to present the check on our behalf. They not only agreed to present the check, but they invited the Humane Society Director, Karen Aquino, to speak to their club about the problems they faced in the aftermath of the disaster and how they met them. Greg Crawford, president of the Joplin Rotary, presented the check to Karen at the club’s weekly meeting on Thursday, August 25th

Recognition Points & Other TRF Updates

Starting Octobe 1, Rotary Foundation recognition points will be awarded for

contributions to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the sponsor portion of a Foundation grant. One Foundation recognition point will be given for every U.S. dollar contributed to these funds, which can then be extended to others to

help them become a Paul Harris Fellow. Donors will no longer need to be a Paul Harris Fellow themselves before Foundation recognition points are awarded.

Updated and streamlined reports are available to club and district officers on Member Access, including the following:

• Benefactor Report

• Club Recognition Summary Report

• Donor History Report

• Every Rotarian, Every Year Eligibility Report

• Monthly Contribution Report

Enhancements include forms for new Rotary Foundation Contributions, Recognition Transfer Requests, and additional contribution reports. In addition, donor recognition processing time and associated costs will decrease as the benefits of a new system are fully realized.

Rotarians who register for Member Access by 14 October are eligible to win 1,000 extra Rotary Foundation recognition points. Registrants will be entered into a drawing, and the winner will be announced after mid-October.

The success of the Gift of Life—AZ project depends on three factors: money, hospital bed, and staff availability, plus a pediatric cardiac surgeon. Take one of these away and the necessary life-saving heart surgery for an underprivileged child suffering with a congenital heart defect most likely will not happen. GOL_AZ board members are constantly involved with each of these factors and have ensured the project’s success of over 200 life-saving surgeries since 1985. Over the years, several dedicated and talented Pediatric

Cardiologists and Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons who have graciously volunteered their time and highly trained skills to the Rotary GOL-AZ project. One of these surgeons is Michael Teodori, M.D., Clinical Professor and the Director of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Department of Surgery in Tucson, AZ. He has performed over 40 complex corrective open-heart surgeries for GOL-AZ since 1989 both in Arizona and Mexico. Additionally, Dr. Teodori has recently traveled to Ethiopia to perform 18 surgeries for The Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia and Healing the Children project. Dr. Teodori was recently voted as one of the “Best top docs in

America” by his peers and was honored Saturday, October 1 with the prestigious Hon Kachina Award in recognition of his volunteerism in Arizona. Before moving to Tucson in 2009, Dr. Teodori was Cirector of the

Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at Phoenix Children’s Hospital working with children from newborn infants to teens with congenital heart defects requiring surgery where he helped develop the state-of-the—art Children’s Heart Center. With all this, he still found time to perform over 300 open-heart surgeries per year which is around 70% of Arizona’s pediatric heart surgeries and with a mortality rate under 3% - one of the best in the nation. Additionally, at Phoenix Children’s he was noted as a distinguished cardiovascular surgeon on the Summit for the Ross Procedure where only a few hundred cardiothoracic surgeons in the world have mastered this procedure and are so licensed. Vist the GOL-AZ website: www.giftoflifeaz.org for more

information on GOL-AZ and see us on FaceBook where we hope that you will let us know that you “like” this Rotary project of the Rotary Clubs of Arizona Districts 5490, 5500, and 5510.

Since this Rotary year began, the Rotary Club of Sun

City has presented 5 Paul Harris Fellowships. Some are multiple Paul Harris’ such as PDG Jim Green and Vicki Frye and three are new to the Fellowship, Jim Hargrave,

Shari Hargrave and Kelly Green. Kelly Green was a special presentation for the Rotary

Club of Sun City. Kelly’s husband was issued a posthumous Paul Harris in Mississauga, Ontario, last November by PRIP Wilf Wilkerson.

Below is the letter with Kelly’s Fellowship:

Kelly Green Peterson Paul Harris Fellowship

Sunday, September 11, 2011

You exemplify Rotary International with your life of Service

Above Self. Without seeking any special recognition, you were the constant advisor and ultimate soul mate to the world’s greatest jazz pianist, Paul Harris Fellow Oscar Peterson.

Your constant support helped Oscar to soar far above

political, racial and social issues to bring the meaning of classic jazz to many thousands of people throughout the world as Canada’s most internationally honored citizen.

The list of your selfless gifts to Oscar -- and through him, the

world -- is too great to list now. However, we are certain that people know about your wonderful contribution to jazz around the world.

This prestigious recognition from Rotary International is

another confirmation of your efforts. I make this special presentation on behalf of Rotary International and the Small and Mighty Rotary Club of Sun City in the presence of our

members and your devoted uncle PDG Jim Green.

ROTARY

DISTRICT 5490

CONFERENCE

Turn prospective members into Rotarians PDG, Marty Feldman

The article below is from the Rotary International website. It is one that all club should be able to use: In the last 10 years, more than 50,000 men and women have completed the

Prospective Member form to find out how they could get involved in their local Rotary club. Imagine how many more members we might attract if every club and district included a

link to the form on their websites and FaceBook pages. “I’ve had 50 to 75 people complete the Prospective Member form in the past two

years,” says Winston Connolly, membership development committee chair for District 7020 (Caribbean), whose district website includes a link to the form. “Many of them have gone on to become members.” Whether it’s community work, networking, or friendship, potential members are drawn

to Rotary for a variety of reasons. Connolly received a membership inquiry from a minister in his community who had contracted polio when he was three and was interested in joining Rotary because of its polio eradication efforts. Connolly forwarded the information to a club in his district, and the minister was invited to a meeting. And that’s exactly how the process is supposed to work. After a prospective member

completes the form, that person’s contact information is forwarded to the district governor and district membership development committee chair, who send the information on to one or more clubs in the area. If a club is interested, it invites the prospective member to a meeting. “This process has been well received by clubs in my district,” says Connolly, who

urges all clubs to take advantage of this resource. The form can also be used by club members who want to refer potential members,

and by relocating or returning members who are looking for a new club. Make it easy for potential members to find your club by embedding ads on your website for Club Locator and “Share Your Passion for Rotary.”

On September 10, the Glendale Council of Service Clubs recently hosted their third annual dinner dance fundraiser, topping last year’s total by a few hundred dollars. Harry Shapiro of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and Bill Kelleher, Past President of the Glendale Rotary Club were co-organizers of the event. The festivities began early in the day with the Knight’s of Columbus

Blood Drive (including blood pressure checks and fire and water safety information) from 9:00 AM to 1;30 PM. Hot dogs and hamburgers were available for lunch following the blood drive. The dinner-dance was held at the Knight’s of Columbus Hall was

attended by local dignitaries and leaders from Kiwanis and Rotary. The Glendale Council of Service Clubs is a coalition of service clubs in Glendale, including Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Knights of Columbus and Glendale Civic Pride Ambassadors. Funds raised at the event will be used for the Back to School

Clothing Drive and Glendale Kiwanis Key Clubs and Rotary Interact Clubs. Though final numbers are not available it is believed the proceeds of

the event will be around $3,000. Kelleher said he and Shapiro decided to organize the event because

they identified a need. “It is something that I feel service clubs should continue with in the future for the benefit of the recipients, but also for the hospitality of the groups; it is an opportunity to get together and enjoy each other’s fellowship.”

The Anthem Rotary Club partners with The Anthem Salvation Army Extension Unit to help needy families.

Three members of the Anthem Rotary Club (Tim Maki, Tom Leyda and Larry Evans) have assumed responsibility for the operation of The Salvation Army’s Service Extension Unit in Anthem. This unit is a volunteer branch of The Salvation Army. Supported by the Anthem Rotary Club, the Unit last year helped many families in need with rent, utilities, prescriptions, food and other basic needs. During the holiday season, our volunteer bell-ringers produced more than $22,000 to help finance the Unit. When combined with SHARE dollars raised through APS and SRP, the Unit provided more than $40,000 of assistance for families in need from Happy Valley Road to New River. Our Rotarians can take great pride in our involvement of service to help the less fortunate.

Rotary Clubs, are you looking for a hands-on project that can help your community? Did you know that The Salvation Army was the inspiration behind the holiday favorite,

“Silver Bells”? Those silver bells represent one of the great traditions of the holiday season, and they provide an exceptional opportunity for Rotarians to give back to our community. The Salvation Army is in great need for volunteer bell-ringers at their familiar red kettles throughout our valley and state. Dollars raised through the kettles help to finance the myriad social service programs provided year-round by the Army. Many Rotary clubs throughout the state have provided bell-ringers for decades. The Anthem Rotary Club has made this opportunity a priority and we strongly encourage your club to accept the Army’s invitation to “adopt a kettle” at one or more locations of your choice this year. We encourage you to involve family and friends in a tradition that enables the Army to save lives, change lives on a daily basis. The need has never been greater. If you aren’t already involved in this manner, we hope you will consider the opportunity and embrace it in Rotary-style fashion. The Salvation Army needs and appreciates our ongoing support.

If your club would like to partner with The Salvation Army, please contact Tom Leyda at

760-485-5549 or email at [email protected], or email Larry Evans at [email protected]

Meet Microcredit Borrowers in Nogales, Mexico, October 29. Small loans to small business owners make big differences in business growth

and funds available to help families help themselves in developing countries. Rotarians have contributed about $150,000 to a microcredit bank in Nogales,

Mexico, over the past two years. On October 29, in Nogales, Mexico, about sixty small business owners who have benefited from these small loans will be displaying their products and sharing how small loans from this Rotarian supported microcredit project have substantially changed their lives and the lives of their children. Rotarians and interested others are invited to meet these borrowers

personally . We will meet at McDonalds (252 W Crawford St, near the border) in Nogales, Arizona at 11:30 AM and we will walk across the border . You will need a passport to reenter the USA. Transportation on the Mexican side will be provided to take us to the Borrower Expo site. We will have interpreters on site and we will return to the USA border about 3 PM.

For more information and registration for the trip, contact Wayne Rish of

Rotary Club of Fountain Hills at [email protected] or 480 664 4820.
