LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORFriends of Burpee,
There are so many exciting programs unrolling at Burpee this Summer
Season: Summer Camps, New Exhibitis, Paleo Digs , The Local, and more!
There is something for everyone here at Burpee!
Burpee continues to be a place of scientific learning in the region, a place
of internationally respected research, and a place of environmental ed-
ucation and conservation. We are proud to collaborate with many fan-
tastic individuals: Auburn CAPA program for High School students, Jer-
emiah Development improving the Haskell-Coronado neighborhood,
and Joan Kelley, who provided scholarships for our enrichment program-
ming. These are just a few!
My deepest thanks to all of you who contributed this winter and spring!
Your participation as program participants, committee members, ven-
dors, volunteers or sponsors is what keeps Burpee alive. Your generosity
and involvement impact Burpee’s every success!
Sincerely,
Dr. Dennis Harezlak
FROM THE FIELD: ON THE DIG
Burpee’s Paleo department is out looking for fossils. On May 22nd
Burpee kicked off the Utah expedition.
“We have several new bones including several gorgeous sauro-
pod vertebrae, foot material, and a nice theropod finger bone to-
day. We are all having a great time!” writes Director Josh Mathews
from the field.
Don’t miss your chance to join the research, digging up the next
big discovery: OPEN POSITIONS available for Montana Expedition,
2017. Call 815.965.3433 for more info.
EGGSTRAVAGANZAOnce a year Burpee and the Discovery Center team up to host
100s of kids eagerly lined up to scoop up 1000s of easter eggs on
Burpee’s back lawn. On April 15th both museums were open for
one lowered museum entrance fee and dozens of families stayed
to visit Burpee.
“This is a fun way to spend the day with my kids at both muse-
ums,” said Shannon Thruman. “And it’s really fun to see all these
families at the museum.”

Burpee Welcomes Josh Mathews:BURPEE’s DIRECTOR OF PALEONTOLOGY
Josh earned his undergraduate degree at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (‘03) majoring in Biology and Geology. Josh studied paleontology of invertebrate communities from rocks in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Graduate studies led him to Northern Illinois University in the Department of Geography, and volunteering as a fossil preparator in the paleontology lab at Burpee. An ‘06 Montana excavation revealed multiple Triceratops specimens: the first documented occurrence of a Triceratops bonebed and Josh’s Masters thesis. Josh became Chief Fossil Preparator and Research Assistant to Dr. William Hammer in the Geology Department at Augustana College. He has returned to NIU to pursue his PhD in the Department of Biological Sciences, studying the biostratigraphy of the Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana and documenting faunal change throughout the formation up to and across the K/Pg boundary.

Madagascar’s subfossil record preserves a
diverse community of animals including el-
ephant birds, pygmy hippopotamus, giant
lemurs, turtles, crocodiles, bats, rodents, and
carnivorans. These fossil accumulations give
us a window into the island’s past from 80,000
years ago to a mere few hundred years ago,
recording the extinction of some groups and
the persistence of others. The crocodylian
subfossil record is limited to two taxa, Voay
robustus and Crocodylus niloticus, found at
sites distributed throughout the island. V. ro-
bustus is extinct while C. niloticus is still found
on the island today, but whether these two
species overlapped temporally, or if Voay was
driven to extinction by competing with Croc-
odylus remains unknown. While their size and
presumed behavior was similar to each other,
nearly nothing is known about the growth and
development of Voay, as the overwhelming
majority of fossil specimens represent mature
adult individuals. Here we describe a nearly
complete juvenile crocodylian specimen from
Anjohibe Cave, northwestern Madagascar.
The specimen is referred to Crocodylus based
on the presence of caviconchal recesses on
the medial wall of the maxillae, and to C. niloti-
cus based on the presence of an oval shaped
internal choana, lack of rostral ornamentation
and a long narrow snout. However, as there
are currently no described juvenile specimens
of Voay robustus, it is important to recognize
that some of the defining characteristics of
that genus may have changed through on-
togeny. This fossil represents the only juvenile
subfossil crocodylian specimen reported from
Madagascar.

BURPEE AWARDED $47,000 GRANT FOR COLLECTION UPGRADESBeating out several larger museums, Burpee was awarded a significant grant to upgrade our collections. Burpee was recently notified by the Utah and
Montana BLM/Dept. of the Interior that they were awarded $47,000 in collections grants. Burpee will be receiving $31,000 from the Montana BLM and
$16,00 from the Utah BLM for upgraded storage, computer/database storage & PT Fossil Preparation.
Maintaining a collection of specimens preserved and cared for properly is a cornerstone of all successful Natural History Museums. A collection item
serves as a snapshot of biodiversity, culture and our planet’s history that can be used to answer questions of Earth’s past and Earth’s future.
From fossils to cultural specimens, the objects are irreplaceable because we can’t go back in time and recreate or replicate these essential pieces of
information about our world. Burpee maintains a collection of specimens that were at a particular place, at a particular moment in time.
The immediate need for any collection is care for the objects. Then the ongoing priority is making collections available for learning and research. At
this time, we don’t know the questions of the future. Yet, our collections might help answer the questions!

NEW! FOSSIL LAKE: UNCOVERING A LOST WORLD
BuRpee iS pROud tO unveil a new exhiBit On the lOweR level
Brand new and showcasing the beautiful specimens of Fossil Lake Wyoming, our new exhibit is
all about Fossil Lake, one of the lakes that make up the Green River Formation.
Fossil Lake isn’t a “lake” anymore. Today it is barren and dry, but 52 million years ago it was lush
and warm. Preservation at Fossil Lake is exceptional. Water conditions caused many animal
and plant remains to sink to the bottom of the lake and become preserved. We find fish, palms,
delicate dragonflies, and even soft-bodied animals like stingrays.
Rain runoff from rising mountains collected in basins and formed the lakes 56 million years ago
(about 9 million years after dinosaurs went extinct). Come visit and dive into Fossil Lake with
Burpee. Special thanks to presenting sponsors Jay and Barbara Brost.
Burpee is excited to announce that our Paleo Lab soon will be wearing a special name! Thanks
to Jay and Barbara Brost’s generous support, the Paleo Viewing Lab is a window to the scien-
tists’ workshop. Paleo Viewing Lab is where our scientists and volunteers use state of the art
tools to carefully remove the sand and stone from around the preserved fossils we uncover at
Burpee digs. Visitors can view the process as it happens and talk to the preparators as research
happens.
PALEO LAB EARNS NEW NAME

I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter. We’re pleased to present and recap events that have taken place this year and the opportunities that abound at Burpee. The 75th anniversary celebration was a beautiful snapshot of our history and the treasures this Museum contains. The brand new Fossil Lake Exhibit is a must-see experience presented by Jay and Barbara Brost. Save the date: August 26th will be a fun night at Burpee. Our annual fundraiser “The Local” is a great night with lots of craft beers, wines and tasty treats to sample. Tickets are available online or at Alpine Bank locations. This is really an exciting place in which to be involved. Take some time this summer to enjoy Burpee!

DANCING WITH THE DINOSceleBRatiOnS Of wOmen in Science at BuRpee.
Everyone was dancing with excitement for the first DWTD Daughter
Dance at Burpee. Auburn High School students shared their talent
to set the mood with special lighting throughout the museum. From
displays featuring amazing discoveries and contributions by female
scientists (part of the Beyond Curie Project) to photobooths for girls
to dress up as different types of scientists, to activity stations and
dancing, the halls of Burpee were alive with energy on April 8. The
first Dancing with The Dinos (DWTD) brought over a hundred fam-
ilies with young children into Burpee to celebrate the potential of
women in science. Music filled the halls as young girls danced with
family and friends at our celebration.
Burpee would like to thank ThermoFisher Scientific, EWT3DNC,
Rockford Bank & Trust, Elizabeth Wood Graphic Design, Brynwood
Myofascial Therapy, Jean & Dennis Harezlak and Drs. Robert & Mari-
anne Firlit for generous contributions making this event possible.
