Earlier Jeremy Clay, on behalf of his family and the Jordan Foundation, presented the Dean with a new plaque, which will be hung in the south choir aisle opposite the vestry, to celebrate the completion of the project. During the evening the Dean said,‘the transformation of the building and our worship has been inspiring and we cannot be grateful enough to the Clay family and the trustees of the Jordan Foundation for their support, vision and commitment to this project.’ ‘Visitors and worshippers alike have all commented on the scheme and it is a pleasure to receive such compliments. Of equal importance, if not greater, the new system has allowed us to replace the old electrics, some of which had started to become potentially dangerous. This work will help to ensure that the cathedral is safe from electrical problems for many years to come.’ The new system has a number of different settings, which worshippers and visitors will discover, ranging from a standard ‘general illumination’for both summer and winter, through to a selection of service and concert settings. The system will also allow different schemes to be managed in various ways, depending on the occasion. An immense thank you to Anne and Jeremy Clay and the Jordan Foundation for their support of this project and for having enabled this essential work to be carried out, while also allowing us to celebrate the architecture of the cathedral in such an exciting way. The principal sponsor for the Nave Dinner was South Hereford Garages along with eight corporate sponsors, and they were there to witness the wonderful show. The corporate tables were sponsored by allpay, Architype, Bartonsham Farm, Bevisol, Claridge Nursing Homes, Peter Prosser Hairdressing, AJ & CI Snell and TRP Sealing Systems Ltd. Choir Gathering Past members of the choir and serving teams return to the Great Hall the following day, Sunday 26 July, for a lunchtime gathering and the opportunity to share stories from across the ages. Those attending already range in age from their late teens through to their 80s. Invitations for the gathering are only available through the Perpetual Trust office (tickets £20 adults, £10 students, Under 5s free) and are limited to those who were members of the choir, involved with it through some means (chorister parent, lay clerk wife, etc) or have been part of the altar party over the years. All are welcome. Tercentennial Three Choirs Festival 25 July - 1 August It is always an immense privilege for the cathedral to host the Three Choirs Festival, but even more so this year as it marks the 300th anniversary of its traditional date of founding. While the exact details of the early years may have been lost, now we are delighted to welcome a week of wonderful music-making by the three cathedral choirs, the festival chorus (representing each of the host cities of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester) the Philharmonia Orchestra and an enormous number of other soloists and ensembles. While tickets have been selling remarkably well for the cathedral-based concerts, there are still many left which have excellent sound, if not the view you would hope for, and for events held in locations other than the cathedral and as part of the Three Choirs Plus programme. Full details can be found at www.3choirs.org. Ticket office 0845 652 1823. Festival fireworks The Trust will help the festival get off to a bright start with a reception and fireworks, sponsored by Bartonsham Dairies, following the opening evening’s concert. Tickets for the event, which will be held in the Great Hall and garden of the Bishop’s Palace, by kind invitation of Bishop Richard and Kay Frith, are only available through the Three Choirs Box Office. In addition to the spectacular fireworks display, you will also be able to hear the cathedral bells, making a great cacophony of sound and light together. Easter from Hereford While you may have thought that Easter had passed for another year, there will be an opportunity over the coming few months to experience it again when the cathedral choir launch their latest CD. Following on from their last recording, which focused on Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, this disc will celebrate the best of their Easter music. The recording will include Jean Langlais’ Messe solennelle; John Taverner’s Dum transisset sabbatum; Charles Villiers Stanford’s Te Deum and Jubilate in C and William Byrd’s In resurrectione tua. The disc will also include Herbert Howells’ St Paul’s Service and Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s Blessed be the God and Father, which was written by Wesley for an Easter Day at Hereford and which is still sung every year at Evensong. The disc, produced by Regent Records and which will be available from the Cathedral Shop from the time of the Three Choirs Festival, has been funded by our special group of Recording Archangels, Angels and Cherubs who ensure that the production and promotional costs of the disc are covered. There is still an opportunity to help fund the disc and anyone interested is asked to contact the Trust Office. Thank you to all those who have already committed to supporting the recording. Work on St John’s Walk willbe starting shortly, withscaffolding initially being putin place to allow the roof onthe southern end, where itjoins onto College Cloisters,to be stripped and inspected. This will allow us to have agreater understanding of theproblems that we will find asthe project moves forward, while not making the Walkunusable during the ThreeChoirs Festival.

We already know that theroof is the home to a numberof rare bryophytes (liverworts, mosses, etc) and the projectwill ensure that as many aspossible will be saved andenabled to re-colonise thenew roof. It will also give theLearning & Publicity Officer,Jo Catling, an opportunity totell the story of this importantgroup of plants, which arerarely considered in

services. We hope to be ableto tell you more in ourautumn newsletter.

With many thanks to theDepartment for Culture,Media and Sport andChurchCare, through theFirst World War CathedralRepair Fund and, at the timeof going to print, the EvesonTrust, the Harley Trust,Michiel and MarilynTimmerman, HerefordshireHistoric Churches Trustand the Alan CadburyCharitable Trust.

The new sound system will befinished within the next fewweeks and fully installed. Many thanks to all who havetolerated the works and theoccasional lack of sound, inparticular those who have notbeen able to use the loopsystem. We hope that the newsystem will be greatlyimproved and that thedisruption during the last fewmonths will become of benefitto all.

Work is still underway indeveloping the broadcastingsystem and we hope tolaunch the Evensongwebcasts later this year, which will give many whoare not able to join us at thecathedral, for a variety ofreasons, the opportunity tohear and share in our

needed and the importanceof the support we have alsoreceived for this projectthrough the First World WarCathedral Repair Fund andfrom the Headley Trust.

Much of the work is to bephotographed and we hope(whether through thewebsite or with anexhibition) that it will bepossible to display many ofthe pictures to help peopleunderstand the challenges ofmaintaining such a buildingand the remarkable work ofthe craftsmen and womenwho work on it.

Roof updateWork to repair three of theroofs is well underway withthe work on the oldchoristers’ vestry (the smallroof between the AudleyChapel and the south easttransept) complete.Woodwork has beenrepaired, lead replaced withstainless steel to reduce thethreat of theft, and rainwatergoods (hoppers, downpipes, etc) renewed. Thankfully nounexpected surprises havebeen found to date!

Work has also begun on theNorth Choir Aisle, the areahigh above the stonemasons’workshop, while the BoothPorch works will begin inmid to late June. We lookforward to being able to tellour many summer visitors, and those joining us for theThree Choirs Festival inparticular, about the work

The new book on thearchaeology uncovered as partof the Close project hascertainly captured the eye of theworld press, with a number ofthe findings being reported inthe Telegraph and Timesnewspapers and the story beingfeatured on CBS broadcastingin the United States.

A number of stories seem tohave caught the imagination:the mediaeval knight who hadbeen involved in jousting, thenumber of high ranking menwho had moved into the area(perhaps tied in with a taxbreak for marrying a localwoman?) and an interestingnumber of child burials. Thedetailed study of over 700individuals has given anexciting glimpse into life, disease, accident and injuryfrom the Norman Conquestthrough to the 19th century.

Those who are part of ourpledged giving programme andwho have been kind enough tolet us know that they haveremembered the cathedral intheir Wills, will be invited to beguests of Christopher James, theTrust’s former Chairman, andhis wife Lotty. The garden, seton the edge of the River Arrowat Eardisland, ranges from arose garden and formal bordersthrough to sweeping lawns andorchard walks.

Invitations are limited to thosewho have pledged their supportthrough these two forms ofgiving, though there is still timeto return your standing order orpledge form if you would care

Over 300 guests attended alecture by Professor NicholasVincent in the nave of thecathedral as part of the Life &Learning @ Hereford Cathedralprogramme jointly hosted byEdward Harley, the currentHigh Sheriff of Herefordshireand a long-time friend andsupporter of the cathedral andPerpetual Trust.

Professor Vincent’s lecture putthe Hereford 1217 exemplar ofthe Magna Carta, along withthe other mediaeval documentsheld in the archives, in contextof what was happeningpolitically in the early 13thcentury. The fascinating talkincluded research he had

pictures and texts that tellsthe medieval story of WesternChristianity on the HerefordMappa Mundi. SarahArrowsmith’s new bookexplores the details of themap and puts colour andvibrancy back into itsdiscoloured vellum, makingits charm and other-worldliness truly accessible tothe reader.

Where in the world wouldyou find a unicorn? Ordragons? Or a man-eatingmanticore? Where are Sodomand Gomorrah? And how didAlexander the Great savehumanity? You probablywouldn’t think to look for theanswers on a Christian worldmap but, somewhatsurprisingly, all thesequestions are part of thecolourful eclectic tapestry of

Much has been written aboutthe tragic death of OliveCooke, the poppy seller fromBristol, who had receivednumerous charitable requests. Our prayers go to her familyand friends as they deal withtheir loss of a lady who was socommitted to the BritishLegion appeal and ofsupporting her community.

The Perpetual Trust is amember of the Institute of

Fundraising and we aspire tofollow and adhere to theircodes of practice. We certainlydo not want to put anyoneunder pressure to support usbut, if you think we have got itwrong, please do let us know.We would rather be aware andtry to remedy our action ratherthan cause discomfort to thosewe value so greatly.

Unsolicited approaches

Annual accountsAt our June Executive meeting we will be adopting our 2014annual report and a copy will appear shortly afterwards on theCharity Commissioners’website, where it can be downloaded, along with those from the preceding four years. You are alsowelcome to request a copy from the Trust office.

From time to time we get askedwhether a legacy needs to be ofa specific size to merit leaving itto the cathedral. Realistically wehave to accept that larger giftsallow us to achieve more inprotecting this gloriousbuilding, supporting the musicand education work along withthe many other areas ofcathedral life, but any gift isalways welcomed and willenable us to achieve somethingwhich we could not have donewithout it.

Whatever the size of yourpledge we are also delighted toinvite you to our annualBenefactors’Party, where wecan thank all those whosupport us in this way andthrough our pledged givingprogramme. If you have alreadyincluded us in your Will, or arethinking about doing so andwould like to join us at theparty, please just let us knowwhat you have done. It will be apleasure to have you with usand to be able to say thank you.

My pledge tothe cathedral

I forgot everything but the voices of thechoir, echoing, it seemed, from above thehigh altar; I saw nothing but little flushesof pink and blue falling on the stonethrough stained windows. The organ of‘Hereford...’ is, as it should be, the voice ofthe cathedral: its calm sweetness places ahand over the spirit; and in this church, with the organ whispering through theaisles, the world and its problems seemover the hills of reality.
