The Strictly team with the judges

A stunning evening!Strictly Dancing returned toHereford in April when tencouples took to the dance floorin front of a celebrity judgingpanel and a packed audience ofover 400 guests.

Each couple performed a danceof their own choice, whichranged from Phil and AudreyCollins performing a Quick Step, predictably to Can’t Hurry Loveby Phil Collins, through to a highspeed modern dance by Johnand Katherine Thompson. Thejudging panel of Sue Holdernessand John Challis, from Only Foolsand Horses and Forever Green,‘Bond Girl’ Fiona Fullerton, whois also a former competitor in theBBC version, and renownedactor John Standing wereenthusiastic for all that thedancers had achieved.

While scores flew about fromboth judges and audience, withMark and Sarah Harper beingcrowned the champions, all thedancers agreed it was anamazing experience.

‘It’s an extraordinary threemonths,’ said Phil Brace, whodanced in the 2010 and 2012events, as well as in 2014.‘When we take to the dancefloor to start our training inearly January, in the depths ofthe winter, we all feel that it isgoing to be impossible toperform anything, never minda two minute dance and a teamdisplay.’

‘Yet, with the support of ourcoach and choreographer,Rebecca White, and the fantasticencouragement that we getfrom each other, somehow it allcomes together. Thank you to allwho came to support us and, tosome out there, it could be yourturn in 2016 ...’

The evening was generouslysupported by South HerefordGarages and we were delightedto welcome Shane Powell andcolleagues on the night.

Westminster Quiz?We were delighted to welcomemany of our Londonsupporters to our annualWestminster Quiz, which thisyear was in a new venue at StColumba’s Church, PontStreet, London. Teams of eightbattled it out once again forthe ‘Champions’ Crown’,which was eventually won bythe Unconstitutionals, led by SirRobert Rogers.

It was a particular pleasure towelcome a number of tables ofyounger supporters, includingmany who had been studentsat the cathedral school. It wasgood to have you with us!

The quiz will return in Aprilnext year.

Due to a problem withdistribution, many of youdid not receive Easter lilysponsor forms in the springmailing, for which weapologise. However, throughour many friends we stillmanaged to distribute alarge number and all wereas generous, as always.

The cathedral was stillpacked with arrangements, created by our wonderfulteam of flower arrangers, onEaster Day and for thefollowing weeks. Thank youto all those who sponsoredblooms and who helpeddistribute the forms.

Easter lilies

‘The museum has made hugeefforts in reaching out to everysingle school district in thearea. This is to ensure thatthey know about theexhibition and make an effortto bring children on field tripsto view the documents.Curriculum has been writtenand programming is offeredthat complement theexhibition. And our effortshave paid off!

‘We are looking forward toseeing numbers increase evenfurther as the summer seasongets underway.’

Also very welcome to attendthe party are those interestedin joining the pledged givingscheme but who have not yetdone so, or those yet to tell usof a legacy commitment.

And let there be light

Work continues on theinstallation of the new

lighting system for thecathedral. The work has nowmoved from the roof spaces tothe body of the building and, when visiting, you will findsmall areas of the buildingsectioned off while thecontractors work at high level. We hope that this will not affectthe enjoyment of your visit.

The new system will initiallybe installed in the nave, withwork moving around thebuilding and the newchandeliers for the transeptsbeing hung early next year.

As the installation alsoincludes the stripping out ofthe old lamps and wires, thenew scheme will emerge over aperiod of time, though we willplan a number of celebrationsfor next year to mark itscompletion.

Grateful thanks must go toAnn and Jeremy Clay, alongwith the Jordan Foundation, fortheir generosity in funding theproject. It will transform thebuilding and how people areable to enjoy its architecture.Thank you for this tremendoussupport and vision.

Patronagerenewed

HRH The Prince of Wales hasrenewed his Patronage of thePerpetual Trust for a furtherfive years.

‘We are obviously delightedwith the news,’ saidChristopher James, Chairman.‘Over the past 10 years ThePrince has been tremendouslysupportive of our work, whichhas enabled us to securesignificant funding to facilitatethe restoration of the cathedraland to give ongoing supportto the Choral Foundation.’

On its travels!‘The Houston Museum ofNatural Science has beenproud to host importantdocuments before - namelythe Dead Sea Scrolls and theEmancipation Proclamation. Both those documents drewhuge numbers of visitors fromnear and far as expected.

‘But when the Magna Cartaand King’s Writ came to ourmuseum from HerefordCathedral – it has not onlydrawn lots of visitors but thereis also an air of reverence andawe in seeing a documentfrom which the USConstitution is based. We areprivileged to host it and tohost the over 14,000 schoolchildren who have seen it sofar. Quite a remarkablenumber considering that it’sover a period of 2 ½ months!

My pledge tothe cathedral

I forgot everything but the voices of thechoir, echoing, it seemed, from above thehigh altar; I saw nothing but little flushesof pink and blue falling on the stonethrough stained windows. The organ of‘Hereford...’ is, as it should be, the voice ofthe cathedral: its calm sweetness places ahand over the spirit; and in this church, with the organ whispering through theaisles, the world and its problems seemover the hills of reality.
