At Hereford Cathedral weare lucky of course to have

one of the finest cathedralorgans in the country, coupledwith a superb acoustic, both ofwhich help to enrich andenhance the musicalcontribution to worship.

As assistant organist, I spend alot of time in the cathedral‘after hours’, practising into theevening. I am often surprisedby how the late sunlight picksout details of the architecturenot usually noticed, such as themysterious and austere carvedstone faces on the capitals

Group Captain JulianAndrews took up the

position of CathedralAdministrator and ChapterClerk at the start of July and wehave all been delighted towelcome him.

For almost 30 years Julian hasworked in the Royal Air Forceand has retired from hisposition as Air and NavalAttaché at the British Embassyin Berlin. Before the forces,Julian read history at St John’sCollege, Cambridge, where hewas also a choral scholar. Hesubsequently sang as a lay clerkat Southwark and Canterburycathedrals. More recently hehas also completed his Master

where the ceiling begins tospring on the north wall of thechancel. In the Lady Chapel, too, it’s striking howdramatically the High Altarglows when lit up by the lightcoming in from the westwindow; this happens shortlyafter or towards the end ofEvensong on sunny autumnevenings. In the cathedral weare surrounded by history andbeauty that is not alwaysobvious, but there waiting tobe discovered.

Festival organ restored

The Festival organ with itspolished and gilded displaypipes, which has been funded

by the Friends.

Many thanks to all thosewho contributed to the

restoration of the Festivalorgan, the re-build of whichwas completed in time forthe Three Choirs Festival. The instrument, which datesfrom 1927, is believed to bethe only such organ onwheels in an Englishcathedral, and it will shortlybe returning to its normalposition in the end bay ofthe south choir aisle.

Over 300 guests enjoyed a combination of fireworks and thecathedral bells at the end of the Trust’s reception on the

opening day of the Three Choirs Festival. Many thanks to the bellringers who are always so supportive of these occasions, not leastas they never get to see the fireworks themselves. Thank you alsoto Bartonsham Dairies for their sponsorship of the evening.

The following day, 100 former members of the cathedral choir andtheir families gathered in the Festival Marquee for a barbequelunch and to swap stories. Former chorister Lindsay Lafford, whowill be celebrating his 100th birthday at the end of the month, sent a message from his home in Arizona and best wishes weresent back to him in return.

A busy schedule of Trust events was completed with a packedaudience listening to former Chairman and Clerk of the House ofCommons, Robert Rogers, sharing a few anecdotes about thePalace of Westminster and his book, Order! Order! which isavailable from the Cathedral Shop. Watch out for volume twoshortly; another excellent stocking filler which will also beavailable from the shop.

Thank you to all those who supported, sponsored and helpedstage these three festival events and huge congratulations to theFestival Committee on a remarkable Three Choirs Festival.

Is War a Necessary Evil?

This was the theme of the cathedral’s first Sixth Formconference, run by the education department. The day brought

together sixty students from around the diocese to discuss theethics of war with a number of speakers including Dr KhaledSherlala, Major-General Arthur Denaro, Group Captain JulianAndrews and Melanie Davies, our communications officer and themother of a serving solider. The day was chaired by JeremyWilding and funded by a private donor.

The students listened to the speakers recounting their own, firsthand experiences. Arthur Denaro spoke about his time as a SASTroop Commander in Dhofar in the 1970s, Khaled Sherlaladescribed how he had driven an ambulance loaded with medicalsupplies over the mountains and into the war zone in Lybia, andMelanie Davies talked about her son who has lost friends andcomrades in Afganistan. After an Any Questions debate with thespeakers, who were joined by Julian Andrews, the studentsthemselves discussed issues of military intervention, nuclear andbiological warfare, and conscription.

‘This was an inspirational conference’, said Nicholas Wardale, head of Religious Studies at John Kyrle High School, Ross on Wye.‘The quality of contributors was excellent and they provokedsome really thoughtful and enthusiastic debate about the ethics ofwar that has left a lasting impression on our A-level ReligiousStudies students.’

Each year, Sarah Arrowsmith, the cathedral’s education officer, and her team of volunteers welcome between 3-4,000 school andcollege students to the cathedral. If you would be interested insupporting the Sixth Form conference or the on-going educationwork, please contact the Trust office.

Brampton Bryan HallFollowing the success of last spring’s visit to Brampton BryanHall, Edward and Victoria Harley have kindly agreed to hostanother evening on Thursday 28 February 2013. The tour, which starts at 5 pm, includes the opportunity to seeand hear about the siege of Brampton Bryan castle, the ruins ofwhich are in the gardens, which was famously defended byLady Brilliana Harley. The blood-stained clothes of the HarleyPrime Minister, the Earl of Oxford, who was stabbed while inoffice, can also be seen along with trophies from Lord Rodney’snaval victories. Perhaps a little more scurrilous, you will alsohear about the passionate love affair between Lady Jane Harleyand Lord Byron, while he lived on the estate! The evening ends with a reception and the opportunity to chatwith Edward and Victoria over drinks and canapés. Although scaffolding is brieflyreturning to the tower ofHereford Cathedral, you neednot fear that it is returning foranother 40 years, as it didwhen it went up in the 1960s. ‘The work which we are doingon the one pinnacle is quiteminor,’ said Glyn Morgan‘though with all the scaffoldingit does look quite dramatic.’ The top few stones of thenorth-east pinnacle, which isabove the masons’ yard, wasrestored in the 1980s and hasstarted to work itself loose. Thetop few layers of stoneworkwill be removed and a metalrod inserted into the centre of

The many other Christmastreats on sale in the CathedralShop include a stunningcalendar showing the Deanerygarden through the year andthe Dean’s book The Saints andSinners of The Marches.

Scaffolding returns to the towerthe pinnacle, which will thenact as a pin through thetop stones.‘Although the masonry work isnot major, the location of itobviously meant it wassomething which could not beignored. The need for extensivescaffolding does however meanthat it has turned into a majorpiece of unexpectedexpenditure. It will be costingus around £10,000 to repair,’said Glyn. ‘We would bedelighted to hear from anyonewho might be interested incontributing to the project andsupporting our other on-goingrestoration work.’

I forgot everything but the voices of thechoir, echoing, it seemed, from above thehigh altar; I saw nothing but little flushes ofpink and blue falling on the stone throughstained windows. The organ of ‘Hereford ...’ is, as it should be, the voice of the cathedral:its calm sweetness places a hand over thespirit; and in this church, with the organwhispering through the aisles, the worldand its problems seem over the hillsof reality.
