Tipping vs. Giving

description

What would happen if Riverview became an insanely generous church? This message details how we must first get out of fear for this to happen.

Tipping

vs.

Giving

Page 2: Out of Fear

For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then

produce a great harvest of generosity in you.- 2 Corinthians 9:10

Fear of God

(and not the good kind)

“Fearing God means to trust him with a degree of respect and honor.”- Steve Sommerlot

Fear of God

(and not the good kind)

You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation

has been cheating me.- Malachi 3:8-9

(and not the good kind)

“The demand that the Christian tithe can even become a dangerous thing, for it permits the false conclusion that the problem of [money] has been

met and conquered.”- Lukas Vischer, “Tithing in the Early Church”

Fear of God

(and not the good kind)

Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in

their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped

in two small coins.

Fear of God

(and not the good kind)

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is has given everything she had to live on.”

- Mark 12:41-44

Fear of the Future

Everything Belongs to Jesus

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.- Psalm 24:1

Everything Belongs to Jesus

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life — whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than

food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store

food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to

your life?- Matthew 6:25-27

And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wild-

flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why

do you have so little faith?- Matthew 6:28-30

Everything Belongs to Jesus

So don’t worry about these things, saying, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already

knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give

you everything you need.- Matthew 6:31-33

So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for

today.- Matthew 6:34

Pay Taxes

“Here, show me the coin used for the tax.” When they handed him a Roman coin, he asked, “Whose

picture and title are stamped on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied. “Well, then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to

God what belongs to God.”

His reply amazed them, and they went away.-Matthew 22:19-22

Take Care of Your Family

But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied

the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

-1 Timothy 5:8

Enjoy Your Things

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so

unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

-1 Timothy 6:17

Be Generous to Those in Need

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a

good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.- 1 Timothy 6:18-19

Be Generous to Those in Need

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in

their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

-James 1:27

Support the Local Church

Don’t you realize that those who work in the temple get their meals from the offerings brought to

the temple? And those who serve at the altar get a share of the sacrificial offerings. In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who preach the Good News should be supported by those who benefit

from it.-1 Corinthians 9:13-14
