Each year a group of BTEC Business students have the opportunity to go to Chester Zoo to learn about how their customer service makes them the number one zoo in the country, as part of their Customer Service unit.

Last year the students took part in three lectures highlighting all of the different aspects of customer service that the zoo uses to make sure their visitors are happy and will be sure to revisit. Zoo staff provided information about how the zoo stays ahead of their competitors, showing the data they use when measuring customer happiness, budgets and costs.

The latest attraction at the zoo are ‘Islands’ which were also discussed. The zoo hopes this attraction will bring even more customers through their gates in the future. The students are now far more aware of the breadth of customer service in the real world and will be using the information gathered to help them in their assignments.

Miss Reding, Teacher of Business said : “The zoo staff did a fantastic job of helping the students relate to customer service in the real world - it is exactly what the students needed to help them with their assignment”.

Hannah Naeem (Stretford High School) joined college in 2015 to undertake a year of study on our level 2 course. She stood out in the class as a student who set extremely high expectations of herself and worked incredibly diligently to reach her own high standards. After a year of hard work she completed the course with a well-deserved

‘Double Distinction’. She built on this success by progressing to the A’ level vocational Business course, also finishing with a ‘Double Distinction’. This was an incredible achievement on a brand new and more rigorous course introduced by the college.

In the same class was Dawid Wilk (St Paul’s R.C. High School) who followed a very similar path to Hannah. He worked extremely hard during his first year at college on our Level 2 vocational Business course achieving a ‘Double Merit’. He used his experience and incredible work ethic to ensure his success on the A’ level vocational course, dedicating all his time in college to studying Business. He finished his course with ‘Double Distinction, Merit’ and has moved to Poland to attend University.

BUSINESS

Industry insights from Coca Cola and more...

Working Options, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping sixth form students better prepare for their careers, ran a motivation and information seminar in college. The event involved three distinguished company Directors, Alison Cannon of Resonate Research and Selection, Keren Rushton-Ratcliffe of Coca Cola and Serge Van Kleef of Rerum Consultancy.

All three speakers gave inspiring talks and invaluable insights to their personal experiences, career paths and routes to success. Their wisdom and first-hand knowledge of food-related industries was generously shared with our students, and had a tangible impact. Following the talks and a ‘question and answer’ session, many students stayed longer to network with our visitors and seek even more potentially life-changing advice.

Mr Poke, the Head of Faculty said, “Our students have been given unique access to first-rate advice about careers, with additional routes to success vividly brought to their attention. More informed decisions can now be made as our students embark on their own careers”. A superb event and a great deal of “food” for thought!

ICT BERLIN TRIPWe recently took 11 Computing and ICT students to Berlin to look at technology. The four day visit started with a trip to the German Technology Museum which housed the first German-built computer, built by Konrad Zuse. There were several historical machines of significance including the original Enigma machine. The museum also housed an exhibition on “Das Netz” explaining the development of the world wide web, with an escort robot called “Tim” to show the students around exhibits belonging to the “Internet of Things”, including a toilet seat which would automatically contact the doctor if

problems were detected! The tour was followed by a walking tour to Checkpoint Charlie, and the remains of the Berlin wall – http://sdtb.de/museum-of-technology/623/

The second day we explored the German Spy Museum which started with an exhibition of the earliest cipher techniques “The Caesar Cipher”, and the first animal equivalent of a drone, used in the war to pass secret codes – a pigeon. The exhibit included some of the earliest spy gadgets from shooting umbrellas to cameras in bras. This was followed by a walking trip to the Brandenburg Gate, and an excursion by some on a five person bike – https://www.deutsches-spionagemuseum

The last day concluded with 2 short flights to cross Germany as Berlin airport was on strike. Altogether a fascinating insight into Berlin and technology as well as history! (Not to mention experiencing the Currywurst – more appreciated by students than staff).

“An excellent trip combining technology and culture!”Mark Pouncey/ Cath Graham.

Medical MavericksOver 110 Health and Social Care students experienced the fascinating world of diagnostics and treatment as they took part in the Medical Mavericks interactive session. Students were able to experience a number of assessments used by specialists in the field as they measured and logged their own health. Professionals gave an insight into the demands and challenges of various roles, and students experienced this for themselves whilst partaking in the activities.

Students were able to see inside their eye with an iPhone retina scan, learning about Ophthalmic Science and Medical Engineering. Learning about Cardiac Physiology, they recorded their heart activity on an ECG and took a photocopy home. Students were able to measure their lung volume with a Spirometer learning about Respiratory Physiology and they tried keyhole surgery on a training device used by surgeons, developing their depth perception and focusing skills.

Students were given the opportunity to see their own heart beating with the ultrasound machine, learning about the various tissue types and images shown by the high-frequency vibrational waves.

The students used a real needle to take fake blood from a fake arm, discovering the world of Phlebotomy, and experienced different eye diseases with the Pathology Goggles. They took basic medical observation such as blood pressure, oxygen stats and temperature, experiencing the assessment checklists of Paramedics and Nurses, alongside testing hearing and reflexes.

Khadra Abdullah - Manchester Academy

Khadra joined the college in 2015 as part of the NHS Cadet Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme. Khadra worked hard on the Cadet Programme and showed excellent skills when on work placement. Khadra successfully completed her NHS Level Apprenticeship, gaining 3 level 2 qualifications. This spurred her on to applying for the level 3 BTEC Health and Social Care Extended Diploma here at Xaverian.

Khadra had higher expectations in terms of academic ability, organisation and work ethic. What was evident from day one was her determination and tenacity – she wanted to succeed. Her ability to set herself a future goal of being a nurse and working towards that goal gave her the drive to succeed in her BTEC Health and Social Care course. The feedback that we received from placements was exemplary and it was on placement that Khadra clearly shone. Being offered a conditional offer onto a Nursing Degree at the University of Salford gave Khadra the motivation to keep going.

Khadra has completed her course here at Xaverian with a grade of DMM – which is enough for her to take up her place at the University of Salford. On successful completion of her course she will have a recognised degree qualification that leads to registration as a qualified nurse, with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

EPQ on the ethics of AmniocentesisA student who has been offered a midwifery place starting this September at Sheffield Hallam University, has found that partaking in the EPQ has supported their understanding of their future vocation and the ethical issues that arise within midwifery.

The title focused on the ethical issues around Amniocentesis, a test you may be offered during pregnancy to check if your baby has a genetic or chromosomal condition, such as Down’s Syndrome, Edwards’ or Patau’s Syndrome.

The student compared the approach adopted in England and those in other countries such as Iceland where there has now been 2 years of no recorded births of children with Down’s Syndrome. This raises questions on why practitioners use tests and diagnostic tools, and how medicine is practiced. This is an issue that practitioners continue to reflect upon today across the field of Health and Social Care.

Aromatherapy for Renal care patients A talk from an experienced practicing nurse who works for Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust demonstrated to students the role of Integrated Therapies in Practice.

The nurse explained what it is like being a therapist in a clinical setting, discussing the importance of clinically trialled treatments and the importance of evidence-based practice. This was particularly important given the nature of the complementary therapies she administers such as aromatherapy, oils and blends used for renal patients suffering with kidney problems.

Lily-Rose Cuthbert - Stockport Grammar School

Lily came to us from Stockport Grammar School with a really strong GCSE profile and it was obvious from the start that she was a determined young woman. She had a clear career pathway of becoming a midwife. Getting accepted onto a Midwifery Degree course straight from college is a real challenge. Many universities receive thousands of applications for limited places. Lily never let this put her off her goal. She worked hard on her personal statement for her UCAS application and prepared herself thoroughly for her interview and through her hard work received several offers from universities. Unusually Sheffield University was that impressed with Lily’s application that they offered her an unconditional offer. We have never experienced a student receiving an unconditional offer for a Midwifery degree at Xaverian College and so it is testament to Lily’s hard work that she received this offer.

The unconditional offer didn’t mean that Lily took her foot off the pedal as she continued to achieve distinctions in all of her coursework units. Lily will become an asset to the Midwifery profession with her level-headiness, determination and understanding of the needs of women before, during and after pregnancy.

BTEC sport provides students with opportunities to learn in many different ways. As well as traditional classroom teaching, learners get the chance to experience practical activities to develop their skills and abilities.

From leading and coaching their own sports sessions, to mountain biking and outdoor pursuits, to planning and organising their own sports events, BTEC sport has it all. In this picture, students are enjoying a day rock climbing in a disused quarry in Derbyshire.

Xaverian College students recently went to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium to visit the University College of Football Business (UCFB) – an industry leader at providing sports degrees with a football twist.UCFB have their campuses at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester and London’s iconic Wembley stadium. Since their launch, UCFB have led the field with degrees that provide pathways for careers in the world of professional football. Xaverian College has a partnership agreement with UCFB that means all Xaverian students who meet the course entry requirements are guaranteed an interview. UCFB has become an increasingly popular choice for Xaverian’s BTEC sports students in recent years.

If you are interested in a career in the football industry, then studying at UCFB could be the pathway for you. Degrees include sports marketing, coaching, psychology and event management amongst others. Many of the courses include a placement at a professional club as part of the course content and they regularly host guest speakers from key sectors of the industry.

The staff and students were given a talk from UCFB lectures in a classroom overlooking the pitch before a behind-the-scenes tour of the

We were taught how to belay and support each other as well as how to climb and abseil. This was part of the Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Unit and fostered a sense of teamwork and responsibility alongside practical skills.

For some members of the group the activity took them out of their comfort zone and challenged them in both physical and emotional ways. This can help develop confidence and independence as well as perseverance and determination, essential attributes in the modern workplace.

Upper 6th student Lewis Mills had the following to say: “I found the rock climbing hard because I don’t really like heights. I wasn’t sure I wanted to take part but I was glad that I did because I felt amazing when I got to the top.”

stadium. It is fair to say that even some Manchester United fans enjoyed the chance to sit in the dressing room seats of players like Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne.

BTEC Sport student Kristian Wall said, “I am definitely interested in applying to UCFB. To have a classroom that looks out over the stadium is unbelievable, and staff were all really friendly and knowledgeable. Some of the courses look right up my street and I love the idea of a work placement at a professional club.”

Investigating a crime scene requires methodical planning, precise analysis and a strong stomach. Xaverian BTEC Applied Science students donned their hazmat suits, slipped on the blue overshoes and entered a murder investigation right here in the bowels of the Maryland building.

The victim was a middle aged, IC1 male. He was discovered collapsed in the basement with what appeared to be a suicide note. However, the scene surrounding the body suggested that this was not an open-and-shut case. Four suspects were identified and it was up to the Xaverian CSIs to collect and analyse the evidence. After an exhaustive investigation the perpetrator was identified and the evidence collected brought them to justice.

BTEC Applied Science at Xaverian provides our students with the skills and techniques to complete scientific investigations across all science disciplines. We put these skills into practice in our mock crime scene where students make use of their forensics techniques.

In the last year we have also visited the NHS Blood and Transplant centre to look at the donation, sampling and testing of blood. The students learned how donations taken at the centre are processed into platelets or whole blood, tested for blood groups then stored before being delivered to hospitals in the North-West.

Most recently we have been visited by ambassadors for Nutritional Science who conducted a workshop on the employment opportunities in the industry. Thirty students had the opportunity to question four scientists from across the sector about their routes into employment, CV writing and interview techniques.
