REPORTS STABLE EARNINGS WITH PRE-TAX PROFIT OF RM302 MILCMS 24 February 2017

CMS reported a total revenue of RM1.55 billion and pre-tax

profit (PBT) of RM302.14 million for the financial year ended 31

December 2016 (FY 2016). Revenue and PBT decreased by 13%

and 22% in comparison to the preceding year’s (FY 2015) record

result of RM1.79 billion and RM388.60 million.

CMS recorded a strong recovery in profits during the second

half of 2016 (2H16) with PBT of RM236.47 million in comparison

to the first half of 2016’s (1H16) PBT of RM65.67 million. PBT for

the fourth quarter ended 31 December 2016 (4Q16) of RM141.73

million improved by 50% in comparison to the third quarter

ended 30 September 2016’s (3Q16) PBT of RM94.74 million and

16% in comparison to the fourth quarter ended 31 December

2015’s (4Q15) PBT of RM122.32 million.

Despite challenging market conditions, Cement Division

recorded a PBT of RM105.0 million, Construction Materials &

Trading Division reported a PBT of RM106.75 million, Construction

& Road Maintenance Division recorded a PBT of RM85.40 million

(excluding the share of results of joint ventures) which was due

to less construction works undertaken and to the reinstatement

of arrears of revenue from routine maintenance work during

2015 resulting in exceptionally solid financial results for the year.

In comparison to FY 2015, Property Development Division’s PBT

improved by 18% to RM23.51 million.

CMS recorded losses of RM35.17 million in FY 2016 largely due to

the losses reported by a CMS associate during 1H16 but steadily

improved in 2H16.

CMS RoadsJKR Sarawak&

Miri-Marudi Road Upgrading Gaining Ground & Still Ahead of Schedule

Building on the Past for Sarawak’s Future’ by

CMS Roads announced that construction of the Miri-Marudi

road is progressing ahead of schedule and is anticipated to be

completed before the end of the 30-month contract period.

In October 2016, local communities and road users appealed

to the State Government to commence construction of the

project ahead of the contracted start-date, due in part to

the hazardous conditions of the existing road. Understanding

their concerns, which had been aggravated by adverse

weather conditions, CMS Roads mobilised their resources

and commenced work on the 43.2km Miri-Marudi road on 13

November 2016.

As part of the company’s commitment to development and

the safety and convenience of road users, CMS Roads pledged

to release quarterly updates on this project. CMS Roads’ next

planned update on the Miri-Marudi road is scheduled for late June

2017.

9 March 2017

CMS Roads and JKR Sarawak organised a

workshop titled ‘Management & Maintenance

of Road Assets using Performance-based

Contract’ in Kuching from 6 to 7 April 2017. The

workshop was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister and

Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation,

YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. James Jemut Anak Masing.

With the tagline Building on the Past for Sarawak’s Future, the 2-day

workshop marked an important milestone towards achieving the highest

performance standard for the management and maintenance of State

roads. The workshop offered an open and collaborative platform to share,

discuss and determine firm strategies to enhance the State’s road assets

management and maintenance approach in line with the needs of a

rapidly-developing State.

“CMS Roads has exceeded its contractual performance at every level, every

year, as reflected in the Road Maintenance Index (RMI) and Contractual

Assessment Rating, and we have introduced specialised equipment,

such as road scanners, and an innovative maintenance management

system, the CMS Road Engineering Asset Management System -CREAM-

to ensure the expectations of all our stakeholders are not only met, but

surpassed. Notwithstanding all this, CMS Roads acknowledges that there

is always room for improvement and is collaborating with JKR Sarawak

to incorporate revised and improved standards and work scope so as to

ensure, going forward, that Sarawak has better roads” said Dato’ Richard

Curtis.

Stay united & never give up !There were hearsays and stories from past experiences that

both warned and prepared us for what would be a tough ‘4

Days 3 Nights’ journey. On 31 March 2017, a total of 27 very

keen, excited and energetic individuals started the journey

which was led by our very sporting and adventurous Group

Managing Director, Dato’ Richard Curtis.

Upon arriving at Rumah Ansi after a full day of air, land and

river travel, we were renewed with a sense of determination.

We collectively had one aim in mind – to take on the weekend’s

challenge and strive to paddle and row hard to reach the finish

line. We were warmly welcomed by the locals who prepared

a feast of local food and drinks. It was a night filled with

laughter, fun and food.

Came the big day where CMS Team which consisted of two

men’s team (CMS Roar 1 and 2) and one ladies’ team (CMS

Roar 3) geared up to paddle through Day 1’s Baleh rapids. The

previous night’s torrential rain had caused heavy flows over the

rapids; however, this made us even more determined to paddle

harder! We were all watchful, taking into consideration our

navigators, captains and seniors’ words of caution especially

to not let history repeat itself – the capsized raft incident in

2012.

We were paddling hard when we were alarmed by a loud crash.

Our worst fears came true – the strong currents pushed both

the CMS Roars 1 raft and a competitor of another category

against a boulder and pinned them under a tree trunk. Neither

the raft nor the longboat could be saved due to the rough

river condition. We were thankful that no one was injured.

As team members abandoned the wrecked raft, CMS Roar 2

paddled towards our fellow colleagues to help get them out of

the rough waters. Though disappointed, we were continuously

reminded to stay united and to never give up!

After two hours, we reached our first pit stop of the race.

We alighted, cleaned ourselves and rested before we bonded

with our new local hosts at Rh. Along that evening. We also

witnessed a wild boar being sacrificed as an offering. We

were graciously invited to join the ’Majlis Pemimpin Bersama

Rakyat’ event which was organised in conjunction with the

raft safari. Deputy Chief Minister, YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr.

James Masing praised CMS for the unwavering and constant

support and participation for the past six years. “Be like CMS,

NEVER GIVE UP!” he concluded.

After a grueling 6-hour battle with the waves, CMS Roar 2 and

3 finally finished fourth place at the finishing line at the Kapit

Terminal, greeted by smiles. The memorable experience was

definitely challenging as we were pushed out of our comfort

zones but it also proved to be very eventful and refreshing.

CMS sponsored RM20,000 for the Baleh Kapit Raft Safari 2017.

On 14 December 2016, our team from PPES Works (Sarawak) was hit

with an unfortunate incident at one of our project sites – the Golden

Bridge project, at the Kuching Waterfront.

A 200-ton crawler crane at the construction site tipped over at 3.40pm

due to unusual and unexpected strong currents from the Sarawak

River which in turn caused the barge to be unstable making it tilt and

drift towards the southern pier. The tilt resulted in the crane’s boom

tipping over into the river.

Our experienced site team responded quickly and implemented

emergency procedures to secure the crane, barge and the project site.

Our team also swiftly installed barricades and flashing safety lights to

ensure the area was safe and river traffic could pass.

by PPES Works

Swift Response

Fortunately, there were no casualties or structural damage as a result

of this incident. This is no doubt contributed by our strict adherence to

site safety procedures.

However, due to the severity of the incident, the project was delayed

for a month while a temporary 100-ton crane was mobilised. The 200-

ton crawler crane was finally repaired and remobilised back to site in

April 2017.

Special thanks to Benedic Gurei (Project Manager), Belinda Mason

(Project Site Engineer), Elli Mering (HSE Officer) and the rest of the

team for their swift response which prevented serious damage to the

bridge, crane and barge.

The Golden Bridge project which was awarded on 20 December 2013 on

a turnkey (design and build) contract to PPES Works (Sarawak) / Naim

Land JV, is scheduled to be completed end of 2017.

Each new year, many of us resolve to lose weight, exercise

more, even as simple as to better ourselves in some way.

This year, why not resolve to be kinder and gentler to our

planet? And that was exactly what CMS did!

The recycling campaign organised by Group Internal Audit

Department started early this year which gave everyone

an opportunity to spring clean their offices and homes to

usher in the New Year.

We received an overwhelming response from CMS

employees who arrived all excited to offload, with stacks

and parcels of recyclable items, comprising of newspapers,

aluminium cans, cardboards, mixed papers, and plastic

bottles. The response was so good that a second recycling

truck had to be called in. It definitely was good timing for

recycling!

The total collection weighed 6,336kg, worth RM1,759.30

will go towards charity.

CMS Cement Division continued ‘Doing Good’ by helping one of their

own - family of the late Mohamad Jamil Bin Kepot who passed away

on 12 August 2016 from Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy post CPR

after suffering from diabetes.

From CMS’ Group Term Life Insurance, a cheque of RM56,064 was

presented to Mohamad Jamil’s spouse, Puan Jenap Bt Mahari to help

ease the family’s financial burden.

Mohamad Jamil joined CMS in September 2007 as a Security Guard

Employees hike uphill to help church

Longhouse Gets new facility

18 March 2017

26 February 2017

Hiking up a hill is already in itself a challenging feat for most people but it is even

tougher when one has to carry a heavy load uphill. That was what our group of CMS

volunteers from the Construction Materials & Trading Division did.

They carried wooden planks, bags of sand and gravel from the foothill of Mount

Singai, Bau all the way up to the Catholic Memorial Pilgrimage Centre, which is

approximately 228 meters above sea level. The materials will be used to build a new

stairway with platforms leading up to the Centre, as well as to construct a new

building. It took them four grueling hours to carry the materials to the top!

Kudos to our volunteers! On top of that, they also contributed RM220.70 towards

the church’s building fund.

On a rainy Sunday morning, our volunteers from CMS Premix

in Bintulu and Miri helped with the preliminary works for the

construction of an outdoor toilet for the longhouse folks of Rumah

Jangi, Ulu Sebauh, Bintulu.

Our volunteers cleared the site of rocks and discarded wood before

mixing cement and laying the bricks to build the toilet wall. The

much needed facility will be used by the longhouse folks and visitors

during communal and festive activities.

Currently, they are still in need of construction materials such as

nails, cement and zinc roofing, and more extensive work has to be

done before the toilet can be completed.

This year, the Group Internal Audit workshop covered a topic on ‘Embracing the Digital Revolution and Good Corporate

Governance’. It was an enlightening session led by our Group Internal Auditor, who shared his knowledge on key areas such

as:

• Rapid evolvement of technology

• Impact of technology on the Business Environment

• Information Technology Risks

• Evolvement of Internal Audit in response to the digital revolution

• Importance of Good Corporate Governance (CG) including the Role of Technology in CG

• How does Good CG add value to businesses, and

• Three lines of defence – roles and contributions to good CG

Real life case studies were also amongst other interesting topics shared during the half-day session.

The workshop was incorporated with a little more fun with some live interaction from the participants. During the

course, questions were posed and answers were crowdsourced from the participants via their mobile devices encouraging

contributions from everyone. An opportunity was also given to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop as they

worked through two case studies with their team and shared their answers with the rest of the participants.

The session ended well with a scrumptious lunch trusting everyone had something to take away on the importance of the

rise of technology and the need to embrace good corporate governance.
