Sunday 8th March – Tiaro

No takers – too wet! Thursday 12th March – Cyclone watch! Thursday 19th March - Biggenden

Any day is a good day for a ride so ten of us on 9 bikes headed off to Biggenden via Wallaville-Goondoon road. The weather was pleasant and after a short stop at Dallarnil for refreshments we arrived at The Grand Hotel at Biggenden about 12.15 for lunch. The meals were enormous and very tasty I think most of us were ready for a granny nap .We came good by about 2pm and headed off to Paradise Dam via the back roads led by Alec. A dozen or so cattle on the road kept us alert and we arrived at the dam safely. It was a surprise to see the dam nearly full and a nice big pond with bridge and fish at the Fisheries and Wildlife Hatchery. We left about 3.30pm and after a few quick bends and corners we were on the main road to Gin Gin and into a couple of brief showers. I would like to thank every one for coming and hope they had great day.

Hendo. Sunday 22nd March - BBQ at Turkey Beach

When I first arrived at the Cruz Cafe I was shocked by the amount of bikes that were there and that I had received only a couple of calls to say they were going. It turned out to be another group of bikers from all over the region. After gathering up John Blaine and Peter Drummond we headed off to Turkey Beach to Lloyd and Barb’s daughter’s place at Turkey Beach.

A nice quiet ride and a pit stop at Miriam Vale we arrived about 12.30pm with the Bundaberg Ulysses Flag flying from the front verandah and Fossil inside having a cuppa tea.

We adjourned to the back verandah with some lovely cold beers and a couple of reds. Lyn and Lloyd cooked the barbie and Barb produced the great salads. I think we all could have stayed a lot longer but after a quick ride around the shore line we headed home at approx.3.30pm.

A short stop at Miriam Vale for fuel where John and Peter went via Rosedale Rd. and the Hendos and Fossil via the highway.

I would like to thank Barb, Lloyd and their daughter and son in law for a very enjoyable day.

Monday 23rd March – John Blaine's Surprise 73rd Birthday Party

There must have been at least 30 bikers, boaties and personal friends waiting in the back room for John and Heather to arrive. He got the shock of his life when he walked in well done ! Heather. What a great night was had by all, there was and old boatie named Gordon who sang, played the mouth organ and guitar all at once and his yacht has sunk out of Bundy. A husband and wife on their yacht were frozen in the Berring Straits near Greenland and lived in an igloo for days with a bottle of Galiano to keep them warm. Many more stories were told by the bikers as well. The restaurant was Hot & Spicy on the corner of Targo and Quay Sts. don't go if you do not like hot food. Nick, Jan, Janice, Bob, Barb and the Hendos all had a great time and Happy Birthday John. Somewhere during the night John and I discussed jumping out of an aeroplane on his 75th birthday.

Thursday 26th March – Biggenden via Dam Road

11 bikes and 12 troopers headed out with Geoff H on his first lead with Paul E and his wife Robyn as tailgate Charlie. Taking Childers Rd to Cedars across the river to Sth Kolan and on to Wallaville via Bullyard. Stopping for refreshments and a chit chat, rain clouds were building up. A couple of troopers were concerned about getting their horses wet and dirty but Geoff skillfully guided the column of well behaved riders (who, by the way, rode in bery tight formation all day – well done men) between the clouds on route to Biggenden via the Dam Road. All had a great lunch at the pub. Sorry Lyn, someone said that you really like corned beef and white sauce. “It was beautiful.” After lunch on to Apple Tree Creek via the Dam Road and Isis Hwy, for ice-cream, then home. Lyn had a nasty fall at the AGM and was unable to ride. Get well soon, as you were missed. A lot of laughing and good conversation was had by all. Geoff says thank you for the privilege of leading, as it was the best ride he has been on since joining the group 3 months ago.

Thursday 2nd April – Burrum Heads A large group gathered at River Cruz on the 2nd April, for the Thursday picnic ride – it was here that Tony Olsen was inducted unofficially as “Captain Thursday” with his own inscribed cap, given by Paul & Robyn – but today he led “learner” Coralyn out to improve her riding skills, while Paul led the rest of us to Burrum Heads via Goodwood road – a short stop at Howard to stretch – then Fossil found his elec's were not up to scratch (blown fuse). Soon we were off enjoying the company and surroundings of Burrum river mouth – except for a couple who decided on a liquid lunch – all in all an excellent days ride and lunch, topped off for those with a break at Apple Tree cafe, where we watched Graham devour a large fruit-salad and ice-cream sundae.

Thursday 2nd April – Burrum Heads

Decided to be up at the front of the pack, instead of looking at the back of helmets. David Mell volunteered to be tailend Charlie. There were 13 bikes, 1 pillion and good weather. Being our BYO lunch we decided to go to Burrum Heads, where most had lunch overlooking the beach front. Some enjoyed the local fare of Ned Kelly pies etc from the local bakery and a couple of guys had lunch at the tavern. The day was spent chatting and catching up on news from those who went to the AGM. Andy’s Korean Harley had a hiccup but with help all worked out fine. On the way home approaching Howard, I got stuck behind a backhoe tractor doing 40 k’s, and was oh so tempted to pass on the double line. The boys up the back had the better view, and they held their breath, as beyond my view were 2 blue heelers with the Kodak camera! Phew!! Last stop at “Sticky Beak” Café and more bullshit over coffee and mango crushes. It was another good “OMO - Old Man’s Outing” and Rob who wears her badge upside down – “OWO”.

Tuesday 17th March – Discovery Tour Aah, Penrith ... it seems like such a long time ago already. We had an invitation from a friend to take a discovery tour. Seven Rum City Riders and four Wollondilly Wanderers met at the AGM entrance at 8am for a day’s riding.

We were led by Phil (Lucky) Neal, who in his most anally retentive way, had the trip fully planned from start to finish. I am not sure any of us northerners can recall exactly where we went but highlights included: • the ruins of the old Mittagong iron works

located under the Woolworth’s Shopping Centre (ya gotta see it to believe it);

• Jamberoo Mountain (I thought it must be one way, the road was so narrow). A steep, winding and narrow challenge for those of us from this flat end of town, made more challenging by the day time closure of Macquarie Pass and the apparently unusual presence of plenty of traffic including buses, trucks and rubber-necking tourists;

• A spectacular view of Kiama from way up on top of some other mountain road (so many twisties);

• The Kiama blowhole;

• The Clifton sea bridge (finding somewhere to park for the photo opportunity was an interesting and circular event causing the locals to peer anxiously from their homes as ten bikes circled several times around the block);

• Some hill top where otherwise perfectly sane (presumably) people launch themselves over the sea in hang gliders and paragliders; and

• Sydney motorway traffic (just a small bit at the end).

There were plenty of stops and sightseeing and Lucky was a very informative guide. The other Wollies made sure that whenever the group was split up by other traffic, we were safely herded ahead without missing any turns or losing anyone. We all had a great day, looking forward now to exploring Albany next year!

Wednesday 18 March - The 5 Ferries Tour

The plan was to ride the five ferries from Sackville to Mangrove Ck and then back to Penrith. By breakfast, it was down to four because one was too far away. So, on a very clear, warm, Penrith morning, eight bikes headed along the Old Northern Rd to Windsor. After a small admin stop at Windsor, we went for Sackville using the start of the Putty Rd.

The ferry at Sackville is a small, ex Morton Bay ferry which carries about 12 cars and like the others, it is a free service (cheaper than a bridge), operates 24/7 and all the ferries are captive (they operate by a cable anchored to both sides). Tony decided to peel off after crossing the river and the rest of us hit the river road. From Sackville to Wisemans Ferry is a fun road that follows the river. It is used only by the locals due to the multitude of tight, blind corners and very narrow sections, but the views are brilliant and I enjoyed the corners.

Lyn, Cherylanne and I waited a while for the rest to catch up at the secondary (smaller) ferry that goes out to St Albans and after a small rest

and a brief discussion with the ferry master, we turned left at the “NO LEFT TURN” sign and were on the ferry.

This craft is bigger than the last one and can carry about 21 cars over the river (wider section of the river and more traffic) to the camping grounds, the local holiday homes and the locals that live over there, like my daughter (Fee), her tribe and their cattle.

Cherylanne and I peeled off at Fee’s place whilst the others went up to St Albans to have a squiz at the oldest pub around. After a wee break, they returned and as they passed (to the great delight of grandson No 4) they all waved and made one hell of a racket with horns and yells (thanks guys). They then went to the main Wisemans Ferry crossing and viewed the craft but didn’t cross the bloody river – maybe they were fairyed out.

They then had a good trip back to Penrith, through Pitt Town, then Windsor and back the way we came. We all had a great day, a good ride, bloody good company and saw some different country. Thanks to Owen for the idea/plan and being tail end but I am still concerned about a 5 Ferries Tour turning into a 2 Ferries Tour and a quick “looksee” at a third. Why didn’t we call it a 2.25 Ferries Tour in the first place??? Ian

Other Rides Route 66 : The Mother Road From John and Heather, on the Guzzi

We must get on, last month we got through Illinois and we still have 7 states to go, not counting Nevada, where we took a detour to go and see Las Vegas.

After crossing the Mississippi River, which is the border of Illinois and Missouri, we were in St. Louis. On the Missouri side heading west, the mother road goes right through the middle, it is a massive city, and we got lost, but after that we were in the amazing country side of Missouri, running along side Hwy 44,

at times leaving the main highway and going deeper into the country as they did in the old days. That night we camped in Robertville State Park, about 50 miles west of St. Louis, which was a massive area covered with 50 foot trees with roads running through, and the odd camp site. We pitched our tent near the amenities block, which had hot showers, washing machines, all this was $8.00 per night, along with the beautiful camp site came the most horrendous electrical storm I have ever encountered. It was very scary, amidst those huge trees, it started at 11pm went on for a couple of hours, at the end of it we were still dry and warm inside our little tent. We were lucky that time. We awoke to a fresh soggy morning, packed our bike then headed west to Cuba for lunch, then on to our next adventure.

Staying with Ed Goodridge, long time owner of Vernelle's Motel a Route 66 icon.

It is located 8 miles west of Rolla, on an old part of the road. It was a trick to find it, as it has been by passed, 300 metres along from Vernelle's there sits John's Modern Cabins, used also by travellers in need of a nights sleep. Staying at Vernelle's felt like going back in time.

Ed directed us to another icon of Route 66, a place hidden away along a beautiful river side amidst green bush, heading west through a place called Dolittle. Turning down a country road across a bridge, we stopped at Elbow Inn at a place called Devils Elbow, this was a popular stop-over for bikies from all over the world.

We exchange phone numbers with two guys on Harleys from Peru. They were big bikes and little guys and one had a cast on his leg and his crutches strapped to the side of his bike. He needed help to take off, but then he was fine.

Going inside we noticed that some females had left some under garments behind, and there were hundreds of these garments hanging from the ceiling, with a matching pair of knickers to match the largest bra.

We had a meal there and a lot of laughs, lovely bunch of guys and girls running the place.

There were many, many places to see, just as interesting, as we went through the state of Missouri, before the 14 miles Route 66 has in Kansas.

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks. 'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.' 'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks. 'No, I can remember it.' 'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so's not to forget it?'

He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.' 'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks. Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!' Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, The old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment. 'Where's my toast ?'

This is what Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes (CBS) Correspondent, thinks about women over 40: As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why: A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't care what you think. If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting. Women over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it. Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated. Women get psychic as they age. You

never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart. Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her. Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress. Ladies, I apologize. For all those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage! Andy Rooney is a really smart guy!
