Mark 15:24-26; 16:1-8

15:24 And they crucified him, and divided his garments, casting a lot on them to decide who might take what. 25 Now it was the third hour and they crucified him. 26 And a notice of the accusation against him had been written, “The king of the Jews.”

16:1 And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right having been clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be utterly amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, the one who was crucified. He was raised, he is not here; see the place where they put him. 7 But go tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going before you to Galilee”; you will see him there just as he told you”. 8 And going out they fled from the tomb, for trembling and terror had them; and they told no one nothing for they were afraid.

Reflections

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the church year. It is celebrated as Reign of Christ, or Christ as King. At the end of time, God. At the end of time, Christ will reign. That is the faith of the church. It gives hope to people. It can assist to puts things into perspective. The scriptures speak of the death of Jesus on the cross and the rising of Jesus from the dead, the empty tomb. This dying is the complete identification of Jesus with humans and the human condition, and the inauguration of a new kingdom in the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. The rising from the dead, not only points to a uniqueness about Jesus, but the promise of a future in this world and in the next. Easter is the birth of Christian hope, and while we are sometime away from Easter, the message remains.

Last week I meet with the Church Council at Penrith

Uniting to update them on the activities of Parramatta Mission

in the area, and to explore possibilities of PM using space

at the church, and future partnerships. Here I am with Rev. Hye Kyoung Lee, who is

the minister at Penrith, and Rev Dr Rob McFarlane, who is the Presbytery minister leader.

Rob has been working with Penrith UC on their strategic

plan and future directions, and relationships with Jamison Town and emu Plains UC.

Parramatta Mission is a member of the MHCC. MHCC is the mental health coordinating council for NSW. This week the MHCC AGM was held. A feature was the launch of the latest version of Ticpot. Ticpot is Trauma-informed Care and Practice organisational toolkit. The TICPOT) is part of a broad strategic direction promoting trauma-informed care and practice (TICP) across service systems throughout Australia. TICPOT is a resource designed to assist services and their workforce in quality improvement initiatives and organisational change processes, and is accessible on the MHCC website. The minister for mental Health, The Hon. Tanya Davis MP, addressed the meeting with an update on the half-way progress of the ten-year mental health plan, which gives attention to social inclusion, recovery, reduction in restraint practices in mental health, and work on the NDIS and mental health.

Congratulations to Liz de Reland in the approval of her PhD that focusses on the history of Parramatta Mission across 200 years.

UnitingCare Australia has relocated into new premises in

Barton, ACT. Here the President of the UCA, Dr Deirdre Palmer, and the CEO of Uniting Care Australia, Claerwen Little National Director UnitingCare

Australia lead the opening blessings on the building

and the work

While in Canberra for the UnitingCare Leaders Forum, I visited Canberra City Uniting Church. Here with the ministers, Revs Paul Chalson, and Rev Miriam Parker-Lacey. Canberra City has three congregations, a morning, a Multicultural congregation that is mostly Tongan, and an afternoon/evening that goes out for dinner. They also are engaged in University campus ministry, and the Early Morning Centre (EMC) which provides breakfast five days per week, and lunch three days per week. The church has multiple rooms that are used for public events and hired out.

Wally Bell, Ngunnawal Elder, who welcomed people from the Uniting Church across Australia to the UnitingCare Australia leaders’ forum in Canberra this past week, spoke of finding stillness, even in the midst of the stuff of life. May we all find stillness – peace - even in the midst of what we are doing. Blessings, Keith Hamilton
