SEPTEMBER WAS A BUSY MONTHFOR NEW ARRIVALS TO THE ISLAND COMMUNITY.

Hilary Sutton swapped one island home for another as she moved back to the UK from the British Virgin Isles to take on the position as Tresco’s new Housekeeping Manager.

We also welcome Robert Letherbarrow who is the new landlord of the New Inn. Robert has moved to Tresco from the Cotswolds with his wife Kathleen and 19-month old son Jakob. Along with its own boat service, Tresco now has its own Marine Engineer in the form of Kevin Ashworth who, along with his wife Martine, has joined us from Brixham. Welcome one and all!

HENRY BIRCH R ETIR E S

It’s the end of an era as Harbourmaster Henry Birch has retired after twenty years in the job and forty-seven as an employee of Tresco Estate.

Well it’s almost the end of an era as Henry will still be working three days a week, looking after the moorings and nipping between Tresco, Bryher and St Mary’s. Born and bred on Tresco, Henry began working for the Estate in 1966 on the farm and after 20 years became the island’s first bike man, running the bike hire shop. Here he oversaw an exponential growth in the bicycle population from 12 to 280. He was also Tresco Coastguard’s Station Officer for nineteen years.

Henry took over as harbourmaster in 1994 and quickly became indispensable to visitors on their yachts and remains one of the most popular locals amongst the island’s guests. Henry said:

“I’d like to thank all the well-wishers for the many cards that I have received. Scilly remains a magical place – my roots go deep here. I’ve really enjoyed being the harbourmaster and hopefully I’ll be around for a bit yet!”

ROSEThe Tresco Times is ashamed to say that it failed in its duty last year to mark the retirement of Rose Locke from Tresco Stores. Rose came to Tresco aged sixteen when her father became General Manager and her first job was helping Henry the butler at the Abbey with shoot parties. Rose went on to be a silver service

waitress at the Island Hotel before running the Abbey Garden Shop for ten years and the Quay Shop for nine years. From the Quay Shop, she moved to Tresco Stores from where she retired last October. Thank you Rose and enjoy your retirement!

The New Inn also bids farewell to James Bailey, who was the affable Deputy GM of New Inn for five years. His wife Steph worked at the GVC initially and then moved to Laundry before becoming became a Mum to the beautiful Sophia!

IT’S AN ISLAND GOODBYE TO ANNA & JAREK AND JAMES & STEPH OF THE NEW INN.

WE WISH THEM ALL THE VERY BEST AND HOPE TO SEE THEM BACK FOR A VISIT SOON!

ST NICHOL AS’ CH U RCH

The refurbishment of St Nicholas’ Church has been going at a cracking pace – the roof has been repaired, the stonework has been repointed, issues with damp have been fixed and the floor joists have been replaced. Works continue as we go to press but a big thank you to all involved and to all the Tresco Times readers who supported the renovation so generously!

I S L A N D A RT

This autumn saw the return of the Falmouth University Drawing BA first year students for a week as guests of the Dorrien Smiths. The Tresco Times got to have a peek in their sketch books and as always their work was of the highest standard. During their stay, Tresco Gallery hosted Pentimento, an exhibition featuring the superb work of both past students and course tutors.

Anna Wypysznska and Jarek Janiak came to Tresco ten years ago: Anna was the Head Housekeeper with a big smile as well as a beady eye for detail and high standards. Quiet and gentle, Jarek was the muscle

at the New Inn serving as porter, handyman, housekeeper and the island’s resident kite surfer.

This year saw the arrival of two very special visitors to Scilly – Elliott Dale and Chris Walters rowed into St Mary’s harbour, having left New York 60 days and six hours earlier and 3,246 miles away, across the Atlantic. Both men are in their mid-fifties and are members of the Lyme Regis Gig Club. Their exploits have helped to raise over £130,000 for the Precious Lives Appeal for the Children’s Hospice South-West.

To help celebrate their arrival the Czar was rowed out to greet them, along with a flotilla of local craft. The crew included Joby Newton, one of the Scilly crew who survived catastrophe on an earlier attempt to row the Atlantic, his mother Michelle Oyler and fiancée, Charlie Bennett of Bryher.

BLOOMING BRILLIANT: TRESCOBRINGS HOME TWO NATIONALBRITAIN IN BLOOM AWARDS

There was cause for celebration on Tresco in October after the island received its first national Britain in Bloom awards.

Tresco has been awarded Gold in the Small Village category as well as a special discretionary Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom Award for Conservation and Wildlife. The awards come as recognition not just for the horticultural excellence throughout the island but also for the successful programme

SUPER FAST BUT ALWAYS SUPERCHILLED

t’s here! On 21st November, the switch was flicked on and superfast broadband began to flow on the islands. For places like Hell Bay, at the very end of the

broadband line, the improvement in download speeds will be transformative.

resco’s links with the world of painting and fine art have grown all the stronger as we are delighted to announce that from 2015 the island will be teaming

up with the renowned Newlyn School of Art to provide art course holidays for our guests. Newlyn School of Art has gained a national reputation for providing short art courses taught by many of the most respected artists working in Cornwall today. With over twelve outdoor courses currently provided by the art school on the dramatic coastline around West Cornwall, it is now providing more landscape courses than any other art school in the UK. This year, we’ll be offering two painting holidays, both hosted by artists who know the islands intimately and have exhibited their work here many times. Respected coastal painter Paul Lewin will be running the first course in June, while in September artist Maggie O’Brien, a seasoned teacher of art courses on Tresco, will be tutoring the group.

Land’s End, a welcome hamper and a candlelit dinner for two at the Flying Boat Restaurant.

The painting holidays are run over four days and included in the price of £950 per person are five nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast at the New Inn, return flights from Land’s End and access to the Abbey Gardens and Flying Boat Spa. of introducing and encouraging breeding of endangered red squirrels on the island. Adam and Tania Dorrien Smith collected the awards at a glittering ceremony in Bristol. Mike Nelhams, the Curator of the Abbey Garden, said: “We are thrilled to be adding these two prestigious awards to our list of accolades. Whilst the spotlight is often on Abbey Garden, I was proud that the judges recognised the gardening efforts across the island. It was also a nice surprise to receive the discretionary award for our work with the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey for our support in rehoming red squirrels on the island – a very popular sight for all our visitors.”

Tony Reading, Tresco’s IT boffin commented: “We’ll be able to provide faster and more reliable WiFi, which is vital as many of our guests are families and bring multiple devices on holiday with them. Many are dedicated users of the internet, including bandwidth hungry applications like games and video. Now we will be able to provide the quality of WiFi service they expect and deserve.” Superfast Broadband may speed up the internet but it won’t speed up Tresco’s relaxing pace of life. Tresco will remain the perfect download for body and soul; now it’s just going to be more relaxing for your iPad too. BE MY TRESCO VALENTINE

This splendid image from the Tresco photographic archive may not be everyone’s idea of a day out with the

girls but it does at least demonstrate the can-do attitude of the island’s womenfolk. While the death-slide was not dusted down this autumn, in October Lucy Dorrien Smith invited a group of her girlfriends to Tresco for a week of fun and frivolity, tempered with yoga classes, spa treatments, guided walks and trips to the other islands, not to mention the occasional glass of wine!

YOGA

As well as weekly yoga classes every Wednesday for our guests, the wonderful Lucy Aldridge will be holding her 5 night Tresco Yoga breaks from 19th March and in the autumn from 2nd October (from £895 including return flights).

A NEW YEAR IS UPON US AND WELOOK FORWARD TO THE RETURNOF OUR VISITORS, IN ALL THEIRVARIED FORMS.

One such visitor is the Kittiwake, pithily described in one of the editor’s favourite books, Birds of the Scilly

Isles by Hilda M. Quick, published in 1964: “…the Kittiwake, a charming little bird with a gentle dark eye and gentle habits, doing no harm to its neighbours and feeding entirely at sea. They come in from the ocean in April, and have colonies on Gorregan and Men-a-vawr. This last rock is a splendid sight from a boat which in calm weather can get in close to the rock-face. Every tiny ledge has a row of nests, and birds keep up a perpetual calling of “Kitti-waak, Kitti-wake” as they come and go and greet their sitting or returning mates. The nests are made of seaweed and grassy stuff, on to which they appear to spew saliva as they trample it firmly with little black feet.” Fifty years on, the Kittiwakes have forsaken the rocks and now are to be found nesting in the coastal banks not far from the Turk’s Head on St Agnes. A very agreeable upscale and maybe they’ve upgraded their nest “glue” too.

Along with Sandwich Terns, one of our favourite spring migrants will be returning soon… Tresco’s Birdman, David Rosair will be leading more of his relaxed and knowledgeable tours of the islands, with all things feathered, winged and beautiful. There are two opportunities to enjoy David’s Spring Migration, Flowers and Butterflies Break. From 1 May – 6 May David will be hosting the break at Hell Bay and from 6 – 10 May, you can join him at the New Inn. For full details of prices and booking please contact David at [email protected] or islandventures.co.uk 01227 793501.

SPORTING ISLE

THE TRESCO & BRYHER CRICKET CLUB HAVE HAD A MUCH-

IMPROVED SEASON, WINNING 6 OUT OF 15 – HIGHLIGHTS

INCLUDED A SPLENDID 84 FROM SKIPPER JON TAYLOR AGAINST

ST MARTIN’S, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY THERE WAS A

VICTORY OVER ST MARY’S FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS AND OVER THIRTY MATCHES!

St Mary’s batted first and through some tight bowling by Andy Lawson (4 overs 12 runs for 2) and Alan Hewitt (4 overs 7 runs for 1) were kept to 111 for 8. In reply, TBCC reached the total in the final over, with a fine 57 not out from Luke Hamilton. Unfortunately it was not a feat that could be repeated, despite in a later game St Mary’s being bowled out for 86 runs. Defeat was duly snatched from the jaws of victory,

as TCCB managed only a paltry 74 runs from their allotted overs. There’s always next year…

An unexpected transatlantic visitor landed on Tresco in October – a Monarch butterfly was photographed by Jill Witham in the Abbey Gardens. The Monarch is a native of North America and would normally be migrating to Mexico or California at this time of year but caught in high winds, this particular butterfly ended up on the Isles of Scilly. It has at least found some nectar from a fellow exotic visitor, an Australian bottlebrush, Callistemon.

MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE TEAM!

SCILLY IMPROVEMENTS

RECENT TRAVELLERS TO THESE FAIR SHORES WILL HAVE BEEN GREETED BY THE SITE OF BUILDING WORKS AT ST MARY’S AIRPORT AND THE TERMINAL IN SOME STATE OF UNDRESS.

The Tresco Times is delighted to report that the builders and cement mixers have disappeared and we are left with

a handsome new terminal building and an improved runway, made possible by funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Regional Growth Fund. The terminal is light and airy with a much larger seating capacity and boasts a refurbished cafe area with splendid views. Passengers will also be able to enjoy waiting for their flights alfresco with a designated outside seating terrace with views across St Mary’s to Samson and Bryher. Improvements to the runway include full lighting as well as at the margins of the landing strip which will allow for increased resilience on days with poor visibility. By lengthening the hard surface of the runway, it will allow for greater stopping distances in wet weather. The Council of the Isles of Scilly, who run the airport, apologise for any disturbance caused to travellers this

summer but are certain that the disruption will prove to be a small price to pay for a much-improved airport. The islands’ infrastructure is to receive a further boost following confirmation of a funding package that will provide £11.9 million for the extension of the St Mary’s quay and development of its freight handling facilities. The scheme will also see the dredging of Penzance harbour. There will also be traffic management improvements around Penzance harbour as part of this project. These measures will not only safeguard the sea link between these two harbours but also increase the range of ships that could deliver the service. Over £6m is being provided by the Department of Transport with just over £5.5m coming from the ERDF. In addition, the main quay building on St Mary’s (what was the Harbourside Hotel) has also been undergoing significant refurbishment. There will be a new first-floor restaurant with an outside balcony, as well as a harbour-side refreshment area, an improved waiting room and temporary baggage storage.

obert Holden was a much-respected figure in the art world and the country’s leading independent

adviser on sale of paintings. His love and understanding of paintings and antiquities developed early in life. As a schoolboy at Eton, he convinced his housemaster that he was better employed setting up a shop in Eton Antiques Market than playing school sports every afternoon. In his adult life, from his Old Burlington St offices in London, Robert smoothed the paths between consignors and buyers and also helped secure important paintings for the nation, most recently Constable’s Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows for the Tate. As a lifelong visitor to Tresco and a timesharer, it is not only as a connoisseur that Robert will be remembered on the island but also as a true gentleman.

Robert Holden, born 14 January 1956,died 9 September 2014.

IT IS WITH SADNESS THAT THE TRESCO TIMES REPORTS THE DEATHS OF TWO OF THE ISLAND’S GREAT SUPPORTERS, FINE ART EXPERT ROBERT HOLDEN AND CELEBRATED SCULPTOR DAVID WYNNE.

avid Wynne was one of the nation’s

greatest sculptors of recent times. From his Boy with a Dolphin on Cheyne Walk in London to the Risen Christ at Wells Cathedral, his work is of international renown. A lack of formal training and disinterest in gallery trends did not always endear him to the established art world but this was of no consequence to the legions of people whose lives continue to be enriched by his sculptures nor was it to David himself. David Wynne was educated at Stowe but it was as a Zoology undergraduate at Cambridge with the encouragement of his tutors that he began to develop as a sculptor. He first came to Tresco on holiday as a friend of the Dorrien Smiths but it was in 1989 that Robert Dorrien Smith acquired the beautiful marble Gaia. This was sited in the heart of the garden, then in a period of recovery following the snow of 1987. Gaia was a symbol of the garden’s reawakening. The dynamic bronze Tresco Children was to follow in the garden as a counterpoint to Gaia. Situated at the southern end of the Lighthouse Walk, the bronze has rightly been described as “an expression of pure joy”. David Wynne’s third Tresco sculpture is another bronze, the Two Dolphins, stationed near the shoreline by the Sea Garden Cottages. These sculptures have become part of the island and, in a place of such natural beauty, they are very much at home. Alongside the glorious beaches and views, the Tresco Children is one of the most photographed and iconic images of Tresco. It is hard to think of a more appropriate memorial to a great artist, one who loved the natural world and loved Tresco.

David Wynne, sculptor, born 25 May 1926,died 4 September 2014
