Leadership Lines

The Communications Council has been busy at work keeping members and the community informed about all League news and happenings. Sharon

Kruk, Our View Editor, has already rolled out four issues of Our View and has come up with some new and interesting ideas to keep us all reading. If you are like me and you use our website daily, then you’ve already noticed all

the updates Elisabeth Grimes, Internal PR, has made. The website is an excellent resource that everyone should utilize, so be sure to check it out at www.juniorleagueoflufkin.org. Elisabeth also puts together all the fabulous Seat Sheets that are on our tables for every meeting! Then there is April Earley, External PR, who helps keep our public in the loop by writing press releases and doing community projects like Zoo Boo. Oh and be sure to smile if you see Allison James, League Photographer, as she is liable to snap a quick picture of you! All these ladies are doing a wonderful job in their placements and, as always, welcome suggestions. So, if you have a great idea that you would like to share, please do not hesitate to grab one of us. Now, to get everyone involved we would also like a little help! The Communications Council wants to use YOU! Each one of us is like a walking, talking billboard sharing information and news with everyone we see. The League does so many amazing things for the community each year. Let’s be sure we all know a few fast facts that we can share!

Pat on the BackLeslie Day

Volunteer of the MonthJulianne Greak

The Pat on the Back this month goes to amemberwhostepped inandfulfilleda placement for another member...on the spur of the moment. She also went above and beyond her duties as a provisional last year. We appreciate you, Leslie Day, and you deserve a “Pat on the Back”!

Our Volunteer of the Monthis incredibly organized, and if you ask her to do something, you can expect that it will be done thoroughly and quickly. She is a very active mother of two adorable girls, a devoted wife, and would do anything for her family…not

to mention she is an awesome cook! Outside of her daily routine with family and Junior League, she volunteers for coffee time and Vacation Bible School at St. Cyprian’s Church. She is a room mom, and is in charge of the Bayou Bash auction display at St. Cyprian’s School. Her friends say she genuinely cares about what is going on in other’s lives. She has a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh and will drop what she is doing to listen to a problem. Congratulations, Julianne Greak, Volunteer of the Month.

Sprint into Spring 5K Run and 1 Mile Kid’s Fun Run

I want to express a huge amount of THANKS to everyone for the amazing Salad Supper turnout! We had the most incredible display of fabulous food! The Merry Christmas Social is just around the corner. We are blessed to have our

Social this year at the most spectacular home of Sustainer, Ann Watson. Her home is decorated for the holidays like none other! She transforms her home into a Christmas showplace with the

help of her daughter and JLL Active, Tara Watson-Watkins. We will have the meal catered by Classic Fare from Nacogdoches. On the menu...Italian Pasta Entree, Salad, from scratch breads and dessert! Our special friend, Dan Huerta, will be doing the wine selections of the evening. Be on the lookout for more information. We hope you can make it! The Done in a Meeting activity for the Merry Christmas Social will benefit a few families from Herty Elementary School. We are asking each of you to generously donate gift cards (Target or Walmart) in order to help make a child’s Christmas merry and bright. $5, $10, $20...anything is appreciated! Sustainer Cindy Tierney is the Principal at Herty and will personally purchase gifts for these special children during the holiday. She will be able to do this because of your kindness collected at the Merry Christmas Social. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

MVP

TheMiddleSchoolVolunteerProgram(MVP) is underway for the 2011– 2012 school year. Wehave had afantastic turn out for volunteers.

There are fifty-four students signed upfromLufkinMiddle School and seventeenstudentsfromHudsonMiddleSchool.Thisis a fantastic number of kids wanting to give

their time to our wonderful community. They are excited and thrilled about getting to help out where help is needed! Asmanyofyouknow,IteachatLufkinMiddleSchool.Mrs.Evans,myprincipal, has allowedme tohavemyMVPvolunteers during my advisory period, which is once a week for thirty minutes at the end of the day. This is a blessing! I will have6th,7th,and8thgradersduringthistime,mostofwhomI will not know. This advisory time will give me a chance to get to know these kids on a personal basis. It will also give the students time to get to know one another and, hopefully, theywillbuildsomelong-lastingfriendships.Italsogivesustime to prepare for our upcoming events, and I will have that personal contact to remind them of events that will soon be taking place. We have several activities planned for the upcoming months. October was Adopt-A-Dog month at the KurthMemorial Animal Shelter. The volunteers made postersfor “October Adopt-A-Dog” awareness. The posters weredisplayed throughout the community to encourage adoption of homeless puppies. The volunteers also cleaned “Paw Park” and helped to walk and bathe the puppies. The Animal Shelter is continuing to ask for donations of newspaper, paper towels, dry dog food, and toys to accommodate the needs of homeless animals. AttheendofOctober,MVPwillbeassistingAnneReyesandtheMuseumofEastTexaswiththeirOctoberPumpkinPatch activity. The students will have various responsibilities throughout the day to help make the day a huge success for the children of Angelina County. In themonth ofNovember,MVPwill be going to theAngelina County Senior Citizen’s Center. The American Legion is graciously allowing the volunteers to help sort through and pack supplies for soldiers. The volunteers will also be making Christmas cards, during their advisory time, to be sent along with the supplies. What a super experience for these kids! During the month of December, the MVP volunteerswill be going to the Lufkin State School. Here they are going to be assisting the staff with the giftwrapping of numerous Christmas presents. This will be another fantastic act of service for our volunteers. ThesearejustafewofthevolunteeringeventsthatMVPwill be doing from now until the end of December. As you may have noticed, some of the months will have two community projects. I think this will work well with the total of seventy volunteers. I won’t need seventy kids at one event, so I can split the group and give them the option of which event they would

Focus on the Community

Over 25 years ago the remarkable service of Hospice in the Pines entered the Angelina County community. This local vision of “Hospice” began when five professional business men and women collaborated

and combined their efforts to undertake the philosophy of the original founder of end-of-life care “Dame Ciciley Saunders.” On April 18, 1986, under the former name Hospice of Lufkin, this exceptional program began and today remains dedicated to providing care to those suffering a life limiting illness. Hospice in the Pines operates as a free-standing, not-for-profit organization directed by a volunteer assembly of local professional men and women leaders, who serve as the Board of Directors. The Directors provide financial advice and guidance while establishing the provisions to assure the organization’s success. Currently, the Board President appointee is the distinguished Mr. Bob Brown, a true man of compassion who is defined by his unselfish devotion to our community. Hospice in the Pines recently received an amazing face lift and celebrated the “Ribbon Cutting” of our new location at 1504 West Frank Avenue on August 4, 2011. Hospice in the Pines was honored by the commitment of DETAB (Deep East Texas Association of Builders) to renovate the property owned by Hospice in the Pines. This is another demonstration of the dedication shown to this unique organization. Hospice in the Pines is rated as one of the best independent healthcare providers to effectively address pain management within East Texas. With the changing environments in healthcare, hospice continues to receive delayed referrals, resulting in minimal time frames to successfully serve the patients prior to their terminal event. While this is a challenge, Hospice in the Pines has continued to implement proactive strategies to advance traditional hospice care. Hospice in the Pines provides more than $150,000.00 in charity care annually and is very devoted to assuring every patient requires the highest standard of end-of-life care. Hospice in the Pines is also very appreciative of the community’s support, and especially the annual contributions received through the Junior League of Lufkin. Each year, Hospice in the Pines creates innovative programs to address children’s

grief, and the JLL provides the necessary funds to support these programs. While bereavement is a required service mandated by the regulatory agencies, no funds are allocated to cover the expense. The funds received by the Junior League of Lufkin are used to develop programs for children through grief camps, literature, and resources. Recently Executive Director Demetress Harrell collaborated with the Stephen F. Austin State University Theater Arts division on a play devoted to the loss of a child titled “Rabbit Hole.” Demetress Harrell presented on the impact of children suffering the loss of a loved one. Hospice in the Pines also created “grief kits” with a foundation in Austin, Texas which are distributed across the nation to families of fallen soldiers. These kits are given to each hospice family, as well and have proven effective in managing grief, especially the age specific book written by Executive Director, Demetress Harrell, which is used to guide parents and professionals on measures to help children cope with death. This is just another example of how the funds granted by the Junior League of Lufkin are used to aid in enhancing the lives of children impacted by the death of a loved one here in Angelina County.

Hospice in the Pines is an accredited program and is a longstanding member of the Texas & New Mexico Hospice Organization, as well as the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Information regarding Hospice in the Pines is accessible on Facebook, as well as on the web at www.hospiceinthepines.com. As we celebrate National Hospice Month this November, Hospice in the Pines will host our 8th annual Memorial Walk, a business after five event and a Healthcare Luncheon available to our community. After 25 years of service, the commitment to excellence in providing end of life care to individuals suffering a life limiting illness still remains steadfast and strong.

Motivational Minute

By Kathi White

I am once again dragging myself to Zumba and to get on exercise equipment that I promised to use if I just got it. It is so easy

to set yourself up for failure when it comes to working out. You know

- like making those New Year’s Resolutions – which are just around the corner. Taking care of SELF, especially if you live a multi-tasking lifestyle filled with a family, a job, volunteering, etc. YOU become the least of your worries. I believe it is inherent in most women to give, give, give, and do for others to ensure everyone in our lives is happy, healthy and wise, until we just throw ourselves away. Examine this! You go, go, go and do, do, do until you get that slap in the face telling you to STOP and smell the roses and take care of SELF. This could be anything from a health issue to just catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and thinking “OMG!” For me it was precisely that- a health issue. One that required me to make a choice between having surgery or taking a shot that has one of the worst side effects in most women’s eyes – weight gain. STOP – pause here for VANITY. The obvious key to staying healthy and keeping the weight off is eating healthier and exercising, right? It should be so easy! You join a gym or some other exercise program – boot camp, Zumba, Pilates, yoga, etc., and you’re feeling good. But then life happens (working late, meetings, Mom time) and before you know it, a week has passed without much exercise and the next battle of the bulge is staring you in the face. These days for me, if I go a week without being active, then the hips, thighs and midriff are like inflated balloons. And that glimpse in the

mirror becomes my slap in the face. I have the will and the want to get to Zumba everyday or to get on that machine and get moving – but life just sometimes gets in the way – of course usually at my urging. I love Zumba and dancing and feel like a million bucks with steady attendance. I think back to those days of being an athlete in high school and continuing to be active well into the mid-30s and then just letting go because everything else in life (kids, family, volunteering, stuff) became more important than “ME.” So to you ladies, especially those under 30, never stop exercising or doing some kind of physical activity to help you stay fit. I tell my 24 and 26-year-old daughters this all the time. It is good to be a little selfish. Your body will thank you for it because starting from scratch in your 40s is tough. Exercising and eating right really will keep you feeling and looking better. Just Do It!

A Walk Down Memory Lane

OctOber 3, 1997

A highlight of 1997 was a receptionheld at the Museum of East Texasin October honoring the First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush. The guest list

included Sustainers, Actives, Provisionals, M.E.T.Board members, L.I.S.D. Superintendent David Sharp and L.I.S.D. School Board members. As a sustaining member of the Junior League of Austin, the First Lady of Texas used her public role to highlight education in Texas and promoted a statewide reading initiative, the First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative for Texas, which focused on the reading skills of entire families. League President Emily Watts wrote about the exciting event in the October issue of the League Laments and said, “I hopeyoufeelasIdothatMrs.Bushisnotsodifferentfrom us. Yes, her schedule is quite a bit more exciting than ours, but we care about the same things. We care about women’s and children’s issues, and we take pride in the work we do to improve those in our community. We are wives, we are mothers, we are volunteers!”

President, Barbara Peterson and Active League Members, Jennifer Webster, Lora Huerta, Tara Watkins, Emily Parks and Hilary Walker previewed the upcoming year and informed us of ways that we can help. Barbara distributed a service survey for us to indicate our areas of interest. From those returned at the end of the meeting, you have already volunteered to help in 74 placements! Linda Malnar will be emailing the survey to Sustainers, so if you missed the meeting, you can still sign up to help. Let Barbara know if you prefer to receive yours by postal mail. Also for the Holiday Tea on November 30, 2011, we have been asked to each bring a new, unwrapped toy for a child (age infant-12 years). This toy will be donated to the Rainbow Room. Contact Lisa Griffin or Kathi Johnson if you have questions. Later in the Spring, Len Medford, Jane Johnson and Judy Perry will put together our Spring Social event. Janice Ann and Ernest Rowe entertained grandchildren Isabelle, 16, George, 15, and Sarah, 12, while her daughter, Nancy Jumper Herde, and husband, Michael, were in town celebrating Nancy’s 30th LHS reunion. Thanks to Cinda Taylor and her daughter, Mollie, Isabelle and George made new friends in Lufkin. Things are different in New Canaan, Connecticut for “high schoolers”! They want to come back for another visit. Their oldest daughter, Hannah, attends Wellesley College in Massachusetts and could not come. Dr. Dan and Barbara Carter are proud grandparents again. Lila Catherine arrived to Dr. Jason and Nicole Carter on Sunday, September 25. She weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces. Her big sister, Claire, is 3 years old. Remember to take care of yourself as you care for so many others during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Be blessed with peace and joy. Send your news to: [email protected]
