Infrastructure & Building

The Infrastructure & Building platform is one of four operating platforms within the Murray & Roberts Group.This platform groups together business units with similar types of work and core competencies and allowsfor better cooperation. The platform consists of Murray & Roberts Construction and Murray & Roberts MiddleEast.

Murray& Roberts Construction was set up as a new operating company, formed by merging Murray & Roberts Construction and Concor, in July 2011. Murray & Roberts Construction oversees the activities of a number of business units which operate as divisions within it.

The operations that form the construction business platform in the SADC region stem from the original Murray & Stewart in the Western Cape dating back to 1902, its initial expansion into the Transvaal gold fields through Roberts Construction in the 1930s and into the rest of Africa from the 1940s, as well as a number of key acquisitions, including Gillis Mason in the 1980s and Concor in 2006.

Murray & Roberts Construction is reputable and experienced and has enough critical mass to tender on high value, complex contracts and to expand into Africa.

Murray & Roberts Plant operates through specialised, project-focused teams who are fully experienced in procurement, commissioning, repair and refurbishment of all specific plant items needed by the company.

Murray & Roberts Plant provides the company with plant and equipment resources. It specialises in the procurement, maintenance, repair and management of construction plant and equipment used on civil, building, roads and earthworks and mining projects.

The company’s asset holding reflects a vastly diverse selection of plant which is geared to support Murray & Roberts Construction’s broad operational focus in Southern Africa.

Assets specific to the building and civil construction sector primarily comprise tower cranes, mobile cranes, concrete batching plants, concrete truck mixers, concrete pumping and all scaffolding systems required for these projects.

In terms of roadwork projects, the fleet includes road surfacing equipment, asphalt plant, aggregate crushing, loading, transporting and compacting equipment, including road surface recycling and milling machines and power generation plant.




Opencast projects are fully serviced by teams maintaining heavy excavator, dozer and loading machinery, including dump trucks, primary crushing and rock drilling equipment.

Primary production plant assets are refurbished and replaced on a regular basis to maintain the best availability.

Murray & Roberts established its first office and commenced operations in the Middle East in 1995. The Group’s first project award in the area was for building the main structure and interior fit-out of the 7 star all suites Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai.

The company has subsequently grown throughout the Middle East with its headquarters based in Dubai and operations in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and Iraq. Market sectors operated in the area include major building and civil projects for airports, hotels/resorts, retail, educational and healthcare, museums, stadiums, marine works, roads and rail and industrial civils and infrastructure.

Projects are mostly undertaken with local partners in fully integrated joint ventures into which Murray & Roberts provides senior project management personnel.

Major projects include Burj Al Arab, Abu Dhabi’s Mafraq Hospital, Zayed and Sorbonne Universities, Madinat Al Qasr Hotel in Dubai, Bahrain’s World Trade Centre Twin Towers, Dubai’s Main International Airport Terminal 3, Concourses 1 & 2 and Abu Dhabi’s International Airport Terminal 3.
