OUR TRIP IN THE UK
9th November 1888
Jack the Ripper struck
again. Today, at 2 am, he
killed another woman. His
5th victim is a prostitute,
like the other ones. Her
name was Mary Jane Kelly
and she was only 24.
Who is he? Why is he doing thesehorrible crimes? What does he want?
Many questions still remain unanswered...
The victim, Mary Jane Kelly
Her neighbour talked about her fears and Mary Jane Kelly:
“I knew her for 4 years, she moved next to my apartment in 1884.
She was a really nice and generous person even if she had money
problems. I tried to help her but she always refused my help. When
she was killed, I wasn’t at home. When the owner of the apartment
told me the news this morning, I was in shock, she was such a
lovely girl... [...] Because of these murders in the district, everybody
is scared to go out in the night. We don’t let our children out in the
evening anymore , and even all day. The whole London is terrified, it
has to stop.”
3Our trip in the UK
The 5th victim...Jack the Ripper is BACK...
Under her head, we found
one breast, her womb and her
kidneys. At her foot, there
was her liver and between her
legs, there were her
intestines. Her skin was
carefully piled up but we
didn’t find her heart. There
were no witnesses: nobody
saw anyone go into Mary
Jane’s apartment.
For your safety, don’t go out
at night, and NEVER be
alone. If you have information
about this man, please
contact the police...
She was found in her
appartment by the owner, at
number 13 of Miller’s Court in
WhiteChapel , in London. It is
the worst crime he had ever
committed.
There was a lot of blood on
the walls. She was lying on
her bed. Her throat was
slashed savagely. All her
body was stabbed, her face
was unrecognizable. Her
abdomen was totally open
and her organs were
scattered everywhere.
It is generally agreed that the modern
Spiritualist movement began on April
1, 1848, New York, when two
teenage sisters, Margaret and Kate
Fox, said that they had
communicated with the ghost of a
man murdered years before their
family moved in. People thought
spiritualism was that the living could
communicate with the dead through
the help of a medium. Unfortunately
they were lying but this idea
remained in people’s memory.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
participated in spiritualist sessions as
early as 1846. In 1861, the year
when Prince Albert died of typhoid,
a thirteen-year-old boy living in
Leicester, Robert James Lees, who
took part in a family session , passed
a message from Albert to the Queen
in which he called her by the pet
name known only to her and her late
husband. Lees was invited to give
sessions at Windsor Castle during
which Albert was called. After her
death Queen Victoria was reported
to send messages to her last
surviving daughter, Princess Louise,
through the medium Lesley Flint.
Appearance of SpiritismThe Victorian era is often associated with
scientific and technological progress, but
many Victorians were prone to the
paranormal, supernatural and occult.
Many late Victorians were fascinated by
the possibility of communication with the
departed souls.

believed in spiritism :
• 37 % believe in it.
• 63 % don't believe in it.
We asked students about spriritism
In England, Bloody Mary isa spirit who is like "la dameblanche" in France. Thelegend says that if you callher 3 times in a row in frontof a mirror, she will appearbehind you, and stab you.
Frightening story...

4Our trip in the UK
One of the most famous Victorian
mediums was Florence Cook
(1856-1904), who materialised
during her sessions Katie King, the
spirit-world daughter, of a spirit
called John King. Florence Cook was
effective at table turning, automatic
writing and levitation. Once when
she was in a trance, she levitated
above the heads of the sitters and
her clothes fell off down to the floor,
which provided additional thrill to the
audience. As Katie King, she also
flirted with her sitters, touched and
kissed them. Her sessions were
reported in detail in spiritualist
journals.
We asked the same students
if they experienced any
paranormal activity :
• 10 % experienced it.
• 90 % didn't experience it.

5Our trip in the UK
During our trip in England we went to
London. We did an itinerary around the
street of London where we saw many
important sites. First of all, the bus left
us near Buckingham Palace. We walked
round the streets and we finally arrived
at the Queen’s home. We took many
pictures and we saw the gards moving.
Then we crossed St james's Park with
many animals like swans , birds ,ducks,
chipmunks . The park was very cool to
run or take a walk and take time to
breathe. We walked down to
Westminster Abbey, where all the royal
family married, so did Kate and William.
At that time we were hungry. We went to
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
where they were many people. We
heard the famous clockbells at 12pm.
We had to take a break so we went to
Trafalgar square but before we passed
in front of 10 Downing street where the
prime minister lives.They were the
constables in black and horse guards.
Finally we took a break in Trafalgar
square just 30 minutes.
The teachers decided to go to the
restaurant so we crossed the London
bridge and arrived in a funfair where
they are the London Eye. We We finally
arrived in the restaurant where we
waited to enter on it during few minutes.
We ate a strange a fish and chips not
healthy at all. ’s not good to be fit. We
met French students. We left the
restaurant to go to the tower bridge. We
left London after this visit.
Tower Bridge at night , the roadis risen .
But it’s also a very usefulbridge to cross the Thamesfor the 40 000 pedestrianswho go to work, and for shipsto move on the river at thesame time. This is animportant symbol of Londonwith Big Ben, London Eye,Westminster Abbey, and theHouses of Parliament. Thismonument is a fundamentalelement of the Londonerlandscape. It favours thepublic transportation andobviously, the urban sprawl ofLondon. Since 1982, thevisitors of the whole worldhave been able to visit amuseum and discover theentrails of the bridge, inparticular the functioning ofthe old hydraulic mechanismwhich allowed the openingofthe bascule bridge.
How does the Tower Bridge enhancethe city of London?
Today, Tower Bridge is abig tourist attraction;indeed, there are 600000 visits every year.
Tower Bridge
During the 19thcentury, it was themost impressivebascule bridge ofthe world. Thisbridge was knownby its particulararchitecture, theVictorian Gothicstyle, which waspoorly received andaccepted by theLondoners at thattime.
The ruralpopulation whocame to London towork could crossthe Thames, because at thattime a lot of peoplelived in the southand were workingin the north.

Tower Bridge
Opening times
In the 19th century, the
building of Tower Bridge, this
huge monument, showed the
soft power of London
because it was the most
technically advanced and the
highest bridge ever built.
Thanks to it, the world
exchanges with England
became easier.
Tower Bridge was also a way
between the Southwark
district and the Hamlet Tower.
It is next to the Tower of
London. Now, it is more
dedicated to tourism. Tower
Bridge is one of the best
places in London, where
almost everybody goes when
they come to England. The
walkways were reopened in
1982 after it closed in 1910.

7Our Trip in the UK
Tower Bridge was built between
1886 and 1894 by five building
contractors and around 430
workers. It is composed of
11.000 tons of steel and the
towers are covered in granite and
Portland’s stone. Since 1976, the
bridge has been powered by oil
and electricity but before, it was
powered by a hydraulic system.
The huge challenge was to build
the bridge without disrupting river
traffic activities.

Camden town
Reputed for its markets of
multiple cultures, Camden Twon is
THE district to be! From Punks and
Grung to Kawaï, you will find
everything you want.
For having been there personally,
the thing that impressed me most is
Camden Market. It's a market where
you can find everything from food to
clothing. There is an enormous
covered market where there are
hundreds of stands of food from
differents countries such as Chile or
Pakistan and many more!
This district is truly charaterized by
its diversity and originality which
make it known all over the world.
Soho is a small area of central
London. In the 20th century it
had a reputation as a basis for
the sex industry. Now Soho is a
fashionable district which has
clubs, nightlife is essential and
holds an important place in
London. Soho has charming
street with some colors ,
beautiful buildings and lots of
brand stores. Soho is an area for
young people where the fashion
has many faces and shapes.
Soho Area
Cyberdog
Cyber dog is a shop in London.
Inside the shop we can find
fluorescent clothes. It’s a very
much visited shop we can find
clothes but also accessories
for all the people. In the shop
the music is very loud and
some dancers dance on a
platform with the clothes which
are sold in the shop.
The shop

A street inshoreditch
Shoreditch
Shoreditch is a district in the East of
London. A market is next to the
Liverpool street station. You can find
clothes but also unknown make up ,
some toys, accessories for babies, or
beach towels.
The clothes that we can find are often
the products which are not like H&M,
Zara and TopShop, but it’s a secret
because the labels are cut before they
are in the shop because the original
shop doesn't want us to know there
products are sold with a ridiculous price.
If you are lucky you could find a product
with the label so it means that it’s an
original product.
Completely different populations live
together in a melting–pot. We can find
homosexual couples live next to
muslims, next to girls with mini skirt. In
short, a district with lot of contradictions
and different people you must discover.

FASHION REPORT
Kensington, in the
south of London, is an
old residential and chic
area (where Queen
Victoria was born). The
rich local residents
stream massively
towards the shops
where you can do
shopping in luxury

famous shop Harrods).
This elitist district
where it is good to walk

Drawing of thecopy of the
Eiffel Tower
The failed copy of the Eiffel Tower
The construction beginsin 1892 and the first floorwas finished in 1895 (itwas 47 meters high ).
The project didn't workout because it's soexpensive (it's called “themadness of Watkin”).The destruction tookplace in 1907.
A drawing contest was
organized to choose the
design of the tower in 1890.
68 drawings were selected
but one was chosen. Gustave
Eiffel refused to build the
tower because itwas a copy
of the French tower.
The idea came from Sir
Edward Watkin, a member of
parliament.
The EiffelTower wasbuilt inWembley.

COPY OF THE EIFFEL TOWER
Paris had its tower so London
wanted its tower. Sir Edward
Watkin said: ”Anything Paris
can do, London can do
bigger”.
The Eiffel Tower in London
was 358 meters high , that
could be the tallest tower of
the world.

11Our trip in the UK
Once I am ready, I get into my
mum's car and she drives me to
the office. I knock at the door and
an old man opens to me. He has
greying hair, small glasses and
some speckles. He tells me that
in two minutes, we'll go question
a poor family for the end's week
article. When we arrive at the
meeting point, a woman comes
to us then invites us to enter a
very narrow flat. She introduces
us to her son, a beautiful but dirty
teenager with messy long dark
brown hair and sharp grey eyes.
He seems shy and because of
that he has a closed face.
The journalist tells me that
during he questions the mother, I
have to question her son. I follow
the latter into a tiny room. We
stay here silently.
"You don't speak very much, do
you ?" I ask.
"The men who speak the least
are the most valiant " He replies.
"Oh it's a quote by
Shakespeare! I admire him ! "
Then he smiles to me, what a
beautiful smile ! I ask him :
" Is it not too hard to live in
these conditions ?"
"Yes, it is, I would like to have a
life like yours… It seems so
easier to live with money !"
«Listen to many,speak to a few»

The Novel
CHAPTER 2
By Hélène Reverdy, Juliette Salomone, Ferdye Mayela, Elia Arrouch and Zoé Noble
" You are wrong, it's not so
easy but anyway . Men take the
object that they don't possess
well above its value !"
"Shakespeare was always
right, despitethe fact that I
haven't got a computer, a
television, or anything else…"
" It's only the beggars who can
count their wealth."
Then I see him look at my bag
before he exclaims :
" You have Pride and prejudice !
I always wanted to read it !"
" Do you want it ? I can lend it to
you for a couple of days…"
"Oh ! Thank you ! You are so
nice … "
He smiles with his beautiful
teeth before the journalist calls
me to come back with him to the
office.
During the travel I think about
this beautiful guy and our little
interview. I look forward to see
him again tomorrow !
SPORTS
SOME INFORMATION ABOUTRUGBY
During our trip in the UK, we visited the MilleniumStadium, it is mainly a stadium for rugby, an importantsport in Wales. So, we are going to talk about this sport.
Rugby’s history
oday, we suppose rugby is an evolution
of “La soule”. It’s an old game which was
played principally in France in about the
10th century. “La soule” did not really
have rules but we know the goal. There
are two teams who confront (for
example: city-dwellers versus farmers)
in nature and they have to take a ball in
the opposite camp.

The « Samoan regime »
It’s a specific regime for
rugbymen with a lot of food.
For breakfast: 5 eggs, 6
slices of beacon and 1 bread
and a half.
For meal: one chicken, one
plate of French fries and a
desert.
For snacks: a sandwich.
For dinner: a double rib steak
with 5 chicken legs, a big
plate of rice, some cheese
and a desert.
C’est un régime pour les
rugbymans avec énormément
de nourriture.
The logo of the Millenium stadium
Our impression when we enteredthe ieldWe arrived at the entrance of the players. When
the doors opened and the music began, we
walked straight to the playing field. We felt
small, because the stadium is huge and
impressive. We were like the players who come
to play, we tried to imagine the atmosphere
when the stadium is full and we tried to immerse
ourselves in it .
Aerial view of the MilleniumStadium, Cardiff, Wales.
The MilleniumStadium
-The Millenium was createdand inaugurated in 1999 toreplace the Arms Park.-It is situated in Cardiff,Wales and it can receive 74500 persons.- It also welcomes concerts, rallyes, box matches, croquet, football … -This isone of the first of the worldwhich has a retractable roof-it cost 121 millions euros.
13Our trip in UK
On the first of January 2006, the
Millenium Stadium was renamed the
Principality Stadium. It is the third
biggest stadium of the Six nations
Tournament after France stadium and
Twickenham (next to London) and it’s
the second highest monument of Cardiff
after the BT Tower. The Millenium
Stadium inspires a lot of architects in all
the world thanks to its innovation, like its
bowl form which allows to the public to
hear better. The roof is retractable in the
case of bad weather. Contrary to the
other sport buildings which were built in
the countryside of the town, the
Millenium Stadium is situated in the city.
