TH E FIRESIDE

It is a good way to check up on the progress of thecommunity. I t is surprising to find how o ft en th e firstusers of the telephone were the men of vision who laterdeveloped into leaders in their respective fields.

The first telephone directory was merely a sheetof paper with the names of about a dozen subscribers.In most cases no numbers were printed in the directoryand call s were made by name. You s imply said to theoperator "Get me Mrs. Jones."

Every new telephone di rectory is a new footprintin the path of progress. The extension of the serviceand your increasing dependence on t hi s means of communication is a tribute to the performance of t he Be llTelephone System in the past.

New problems of operation and management develop as f as t as the old ones ar e solved, bu t we havefaith in our ability to meet the demands of each newera as we have met those of the past.

And we have the benef it of the experience of otherswho ar e working on similar problems in uther partsof the Bell System.
