A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Black History Month: A Time of Reflection and Celebration

It may be near impossible to fully honor the many gifts and contributions of African Americans during one month that celebrates their heritage and culture, but we can definitely try! Here at the DCSL, we strive to celebrate the diversity of our members, and we have lots of great activities and events happening throughout this month as we celebrate Black History. For a complete list of Black History events, see page seven.

Personally, as I reflect on the contributions of hundreds of African Americans throughout history, there were two people who inspired me the most Pauli Murray and Dr. Howard Thurman.

Ms. Murray, who was raised in Durham by her grandparents, once said, “I’ve lived to see my lost causes found.” Ms. Murray’s lifelong work for civil rights and social justice, and this quote, reminds me to trust myself to take a stand even when it appears that I am standing alone.

Her journey began when she was denied the chance to do postgraduate work at Harvard University because of her gender. She became the first African American, male or female, to receive a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from Yale Law School. She went on to play a significant role in the civil rights movement in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Another influential person in my life is Dr. Howard Thurman. Dr. Thurman was an influential educator, philosopher, theologian and civil rights leader whose beliefs surrounding nonviolence impacted some of the most notable civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He once said, “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Let’s keep their legacy going! Join us for our upcoming Legacy Breakfast where we will continue to celebrate those whose work has “come alive,” inspiring us all to make a difference in our community. For event details, see page 14.

All month long, let’s remember “coming alive is ageless!”

In the spirit of community,

HEALTH & WELLNESS: TAIJI WITH GABE ST. CLAIR Risha Bailey, Advancement Director Gabe St. Clair is very passionate about Taiji. The ancient art form, which has

many martial arts elements and many different styles, is very beneficial to its

students. Gabe, who began studying Taiji in 1998 under Dr. Jay Dunbar of the

Magic Tortoise School, says Taiji participants benefit from its techniques that

improve posture, balance, and concentration.

Gabe’s journey with Taiji and the DCSL began in 2006 when she was inspired

to drop by the center to see what programs and activities were offered to senior

participants. At that time, she says the Center only offered line dancing and

bingo classes. Her “let’s just go over there,” attitude paved the way for this

amazing class that has been running for over 12 years now.

Two styles are offered the WuHao style which Gabe began teaching in 2006 and the Chen style, which began

last fall. The Chen “long form” style is more dynamic according to St. Clair while the WuHao style is slower and

more intense. There are, on average, 15 people who participate in each class.

The act or posture of smiling and lifting up the head, as to evoke positive wellbeing, is one of the most

emphasized positions throughout both classes. While some are inspired by the martial arts aspect of the

class, others are motivated by the sheer energy each position brings. For Gabe, who feels called to the art

form, Taiji helps to keep participants centered, improves cognitive awareness and memory, and helps them

develop a lighter perspective for things in life.

To learn more about Taiji, join Gabe on Mondays and Fridays from 10:00 AM 11:30 AM in the Activity Room.

Special guest from China and Gabe’s master teacher, Master Rose Oliver of the Double Dragon Alliance, will be facilitating a class at the DCSL on February 16th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM in the Activity Room. If interested, please register at the front desk.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE African Americans & Herbs: A Historical Perspective Muata Faruq-Farrow, DCSL Member & Volunteer

What many may recall as home remedies from grandma were herbal remedies used throughout the ages to treat all sorts of illnesses. For African Americans, many of these remedies were passed down from slaves during the middle passage, when many herbs like licorice were woven into their necklaces.

Healers kept many slaves alive by using herbs to treat fevers, bronchial infections, and other lung infections. The trace minerals in the herbs, like eucalyptus, helped many to heal quickly so they could return back to work in the fields and kitchens. For bronchial and lung infections for example, many healers burned herbs to open up the chest and clear the airway of congestion.

Many healers adapted Native American medicines and European herbs to their remedies as well. Many herbs were picked, dried, and stored in the root cellar for use throughout the year. Now 75% of all Americans use alternative forms of healing. What was old is now new again. To learn more about the importance of herbs, come join our class, Spice Up Your Life Two, that starts later this spring.

LEARN & GROW: MATURE ADULTS & THE ARTS Alvonia Baldwin, Center Director

Downtown Durham has seen tremendous growth over the years, and has become

an area filled with life, diversity, culture, entertainment and the arts. Here at the

DCSL, we believe that the arts at any age enhances the quality of one’s life.

The idea to increase the need of performing arts came to fruition on January 10,

2018, when DCSL had a onewoman performance by Dianne Faison called, “The

Spirit of Harriet Tubman.” This performance was phenomenal, powerful, and

educational. DCSL members provided rave reviews with so many compliments,

and we saw the gratitude and appreciation of a muchneeded program.

Since then, DCSL has partnered with The Carolina Theater for the Arts Discovery

Educational Series. Noel James, Director of Education and Community Engagement at the Carolina Theatre,

reached out to DCSL in hopes of forming a collaboration within the community for intergenerational programs,

in which her timing was perfect.

We are grateful that DCSL members get to enjoy rich educational experiences. DCSL is within walking

distance to the Carolina Theatre which helps to promote physical activity along with socialization and cognitive

stimulation through the programs. DCSL is honored to be a part of Arts Discovery Series this year and we look

forward to viewing the following shows:

1. February One Feb. 1, 2018

2. Musick Fit for A King Feb. 6, 2018

3. My Heart in A Suitcase May 4, 2018

All shows starts at 11:20 AM. Interested members must register at the front desk of DCSL to reserve your seat. For a detailed description of the shows see flyer posted by the reception desk or visit online

at www.carolinatheatre.org/education.

FEBRUARY IS A MONTH OF TRANSITION FOR THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Risha Bailey, Advancement Director

Beginning this month, the duties of the Volunteer

Coordinator have been merged into a new

Program Coordinator position here at the DCSL.

As the baton is passed from one great employee to another,

we wanted to say “Farewell and Best Wishes!” to Peggy

Harewood, the former Volunteer Coordinator (on the left) who

was very instrumental in reviving our volunteer program.

Peggy also launched the Volunteer Center at the main

location in downtown Durham.

As we wish Peggy the best, we also embrace Janae Brown (on the right) who will officially begin her position

as the Program Coordinator on February 5th. In her new role, Janae will coordinate DCSL programs, and

recruit, train, and manage volunteers.

CARE & SUPPORT: PREVENTING SENIOR ISOLATION Michael Patterson, Support Services Manager According to theU.S. Census Bureau11 million or 28%

of people aged 65 and older live alone. While living alone

does not lead to social isolation, it is certainly a predisposing

factor.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation can lead to serious

consequences for senior health. Nobody relishes the

prospect of aging without a spouse or family member at their

side, without friends to help them laugh at the ridiculous parts

of life or support them through difficult times. Yet, that

has become an unfortunate reality for many seniors today.

Understanding the causes, risk factors, and impact of senior

isolation helps us create programs and services to better serve older adults in our community.

DCSL’s transportation and congregate meal programs are two ways we aim to reduce senior isolation. We

understand that the lack of adequate transportation is a primary cause of social isolation. As a result, we work

with local organizations, like First Transit, to provide transportation services to and from our centers to ensure

our seniors have access to educational, recreational, and social services in welcoming community settings.

Transportation to our congregate meal program offered at JFK Towers, WD Hill, and Little River satellite

centers provides a daily meal to seniors and an opportunity for them to socialize with friends. Lastly, we offer a

monthly public transportation training class to teach seniors how to navigate the public transportation system.

If you would like to learn more about ways to prevent senior isolation or the DCSL’s transportation and

congregate meal programs, please contact our support services department 9196888247 ext. 122.
