Welcome to the month of March! I absolutely love this month as we have so very much to celebrate! We have: Women’s History Month; National Nutrition Month; American Red Cross Month; “taxes are not due yet” month, and my absolute favorite, St. Patrick’s Day! Whoops, it is also “my husband’s birthday” month! I was fortunate to be born into the William Foley household, where Irish whiskey was as much of a staple as bread. My grandparents were born and raised in Ireland/England and could tell a story that was so long, we were asked to wear our jammies before the tales began! I often think of my grandfather as he stayed with us for quite some time after the passing of my grandmother. Grandpa Foley’s age brought a thicker brogue, and the stories appeared longer than when I was a small child. I found my patience as a teenager was not what it should have been. As dad aged, we were never sure if it was his dementia or his Irish heritage as he too developed the knack of storytelling. My mother used to say, “Your father has told that story so many times with so much exaggeration, that I fear he now believes every word he is saying!” I truly feel that “heredity” was responsible as both of my brothers have inherited this trait, and on occasion, my children have accused me of the same! I will never forget our trip to England and Wales in 1995. Most of dad’s family had moved to the Barrow-In-Furness area from Ireland, so after mom’s 8+ years of research before she wrote her book “From an Acorn to a Tree,” the history of her Kraus heritage, she was adamant that dad start his research on his own family. We were lucky enough to land upon one pub in the small town of nearby Dalton, which turned out to be a big “Foley” hangout for over 80 years. I will never forget the disgust on mother’s face as we exited this pub one evening. After pouring her heart and soul into her book on her own family, we were able to get three generations of dad’s side uncovered in the pub in one long afternoon! I told her not to worry. I knew that her well researched book was solid to the letter. Based on the stories we heard by dad’s Irish family, neighbors, and friends of friends of friends ... dad’s book was certainly going to be a writing of fiction! CONTINUED ON PAGE THREE

We now celebrate every St.Patrick’s Day with the stories thathave been passed down to, now,our own children. With a surprise60th birthday party planned fortheir dad two days prior to thisfestive day, our kids have decidedthat they do not want todisrespect their father and his ownculture. Even though Tom has notgrasped his own heritage languageof Latin, the children will betelling their Irish tales in Spanish(non-fluent) with the drink ofgreen margaritas. My father wouldso proud!

Have a wonderful Marcheveryone!

From the WellnessCenter

Let’s talk about PneumoniaPneumonias are the most

common fatal infection, andincidence is increased in elderlypopulation. Many factorscontribute to the increasedincidences of pneumonia in theelderly that result in highmorbidity and mortality. Thechanges in the pulmonaryfunctions result in decreasedcough effectiveness and increasedresidual volume, reducing oxygensaturation and making an elderlyperson highly susceptible. Otherrisks would be COPD orEmphysema and ChronicBronchitis.

Pneumonia is an inflammatorycondition of the lungs affectingthe microscopic air sacs known asalveoli caused by virus or bacteria.

The signs/symptoms arefatigue, fever, chills, cough, runnynose, dyspnea or shortness ofbreath, and chest pain. ThePneumococcal Pneumonia cancause coughing of blood(hemoptysis) or sputum can berusty color.

Common bacteria areStreptococcus, the most commonbacteria in all age groups exceptinfants, and Staphylococcusaureus.

It starts when bacteria enter thelungs with inhalation or bloodstream if other parts of the bodyare infected. The bacteria lives in

the upper respiratory tract and isinhaled through. The invasiontriggers the immune system, which responds by sending thewhite blood cells (WBC) to attackthe bacteria. They engulf and killthe organisms but releasecytokins, resulting in generalactivation of the immune systemcausing fever, chills, fatigue, whichare common in bacterial or fungalpneumonia. The white bloodcells, bacteria, and fluid leakedfrom the blood vessels fill the airsacs of the lungs and impairoxygen transport, resulting inshortness of breath. If theinfection goes into the bloodstream, septic shock can result anddamage the other systems like thebrain, kidneys, and heart. Deathcan result from complications. Itis so important to get apneumonia vaccination. If youhave not been vaccinated yet, nowis the time.
