Our story began in 1995 with a commitment to provide leading kitchen designs at the best local price to trade professionals and their customers. Today, we are the UK’s number 1 trade kitchen supplier. Our products are available from stock in more than 700 depots across the UK.

The partnership between Howdens and Leonard Cheshire Disability is based on a shared belief in the value of local relationships and putting local communities first.

Since 2004, Howdens has worked closely with the UK’s leading charity for disabled people to develop a range of Inclusive kitchens, and to support and empower thousands of individuals across the country – donating over £2m in the process.

MORE THAN JUST CARE

Leonard Cheshire Disability helps people with physical and learning disabilities to live independently. Not just by providing care and accommodation, but also making it easier for them to develop skills through employment, education and volunteering so they can contribute to their local communities.

DEVELOPING INCLUSIVE KITCHENS

For many residents in Leonard Cheshire homes, preparing food is an important and enjoyable part of life. We have used our knowledge to make this as easy as possible, and have developed a range of Inclusive kitchens, with features and modifications for people of different abilities.

‘CAN DO’ PROJECT

Since 2011, we have supported and funded the Leonard Cheshire Disability ‘Can Do’ project, which gives young adults with disabilities the chance to volunteer in their own communities, and can lead to employment.

FUNDRAISING AND VOLUNTEERING

Howdens employees are involved in various fundraising challenges and volunteering projects throughout the year for Leonard Cheshire Disability, including the Great North Run and Ride 100.

1. KITCHEN LAYOUT

Position your cooking area, refrigeration and sink in a linear layout to create an optimal working space. Include space for a turning circle if you need to accommodate a wheelchair.

2. ACCESSIBILITY

Worktops, appliances and wall units need to be at the right height for your needs and may need to be adjustable. You can also choose from flexible plinth heights.

3. USABILITY

Bar handles and lever-action taps are easier to use, while magnetic pressure catches take the effort out of opening doors.

60mm Plinth

The overall height of the unit is lowered to 820mm, giving better accessibility to work surfaces and cabinets. Units at this plinth height can also be used with pull-out accessories for increased functionality.

A wide range of units are available using a 60mm plinth including drawer packs, appliance housing, and units fitted with 170º hinges for improved accessibility.

223mm Plinth

Our 223mm plinth utilises standard height cabinets that are raised from the floor, allowing wheelchair footplates to pass underneath for better access to work surfaces and cabinets. Units available include drawer options and units fitted with 170º hinges for greater flexibility.

WorktopsPerformance and appearance are equally important in a worktop, which needs to stand up to a variety of uses whilst complementing our kitchen frontal. We provide the Light Reflective Value (LRV), so that the visual contrast between surfaces is identified. Visual contrast enables people with impaired vision to gather information about an environment, increasing confidence and independence*.

GUARANTEES

All granite, wood and laminate worktops come with a one year manufacturing guarantee. Our Silestone quartz has a 25 year warranty subject to registration. In the unlikely event of a defect in manufacturing or raw materials, we will replace them promptly and without charge.

Solid StoneSolid surface or stone worktops are the perfect choice for today's demanding kitchens. Available in quartz and granite, the natural beauty of these worktops will complete the look in both a traditional and modern kitchen. Matching island worktops are available in quartz creating a centre piece to your kitchen. Our solid stone worktops are available in a sleek 20mm thickness.

WoodSolid wood worktops will add warmth and character to your kitchen. Pre-finished worktops are ready to fit, however for a unique finish, use any of our oils, waxes or apply a plastic coating to keep them looking their best for years to come. They are available in two thicknesses; 27mm and 40mm.

LaminateLaminate worktops come in a wide variety of colours and textures including realistic stone or real wood effects. Stainless SteelStainless steel sinks are practical, durable and easy to keep clean. They are resistant to staining, chipping and cracking so they will withstand the stresses of everyday use. CompositeManufactured using technically advanced polymers, composite sinks are highly resistant to impact and scratching so they are very durable.

Flexible Strip LightingOur lighting is available in both warm and natural tones to suit the style of your kitchen. There are also two designs to choose from; our standard flexible LED strips have the bulbs placed further apart whilst the upgrade strips have the bulbs placed closer together for a more continuous look.

Task LightingOur lighting can be installed in even the most challenging of spaces, such as under cabinets. Under cabinet downlighters fitted directly above the work surface will ensure bright, focused task lighting. Our downlighters are available in a variety of shapes and sizes in both warm and neutral tones.

Retro-fit LightingOur retro-fit lighting can be installed after your kitchen has been fitted. There are lots of variations to choose from: cabinet or drawer lighting activated by sensors. These lights come on automatically when you open your cabinets – revealing their contents, even into the corners. So there’s no more hunting for items in the dark.

Stainless Steel, Chrome and PewterMetal handles such as stainless steel, chrome and pewter effect have the versatility to match any kitchen door colour. A stainless steel handle will give a clean and sleek style, whilst chrome handles often have a contemporary look. Wooden handles go really well with white or cream kitchen doors, bringing rustic, farmhouse feel.
