Merton Arts Trail is celebrating its second birthday, it has grown bigger and stronger this year, we have many more venues and artist numbers have increased by 30%. The appreciative response of both artists and visitors, together with the support of local sponsors to this new open studio event here on our own doorstep, give testimony to the fact that Merton has been patiently waiting for a forum such as this, to serve its artistic community. As with last year, we have been truly impressed by the quality of work which is being produced here in Merton, strongly supported by the University of the Arts here in Wimbledon, and arts education for all ages and abilities: the fact is, art can be rewarding and fun, and we hope you will all enjoy being able to meet our artists and talk to them first-hand about their work. This event is free to all visitors, and our artists’ participation has been strongly supported by our sponsors and advertisers without whom none of this could happen with such style and enthusiasm. Twelve artists take their cue from William Morris, the 19th century designer, writer and socialist thinker,in an exhibition named after one of his books. His firm Morris & Co based on the banks of the River Wandle in the former Merton Priory precincts was famous for its stained glass, tapestries, woven carpets and printed fabrics.
The Chapter House will be open the second weekend of the Merton Arts Trail and the following weekend for an exhibition of contemporary art inspired by Morris’s legacy.
There will also be Morris & Co artefacts on display and block-printing workshops running both weekends.

The Chapter House is located between the Sainsbury’s / M&S superstore and Merton Abbey Mills. Access is via the pedestrian underpass connecting the car parks for Sainsbury’s and Pizza Hut underneath Merantun Way.
