Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…This prospectus is intended to give some background information about the school, its organisation, curriculum and its place in the community. I hope the prospectus will give you a flavour of our school and also provide some practical information to help your child settle into the school. The prospectus is set out in five main sections: 1. Introduction, 2. Key information –routines etc, 3. Parental involvement, 4. Curriculum information such as the subjects we cover and some of the content, 5. Other information.

We appreciate that a child’s education does not start and finish as they enter and leave our school each day and we very much look forward to working together in partnership with you, for the benefit of your child. Parents are warmly welcome in school and are encouraged to openly discuss any concerns and to play an active part in the life of the school. In partnership, we aim to develop the potential of every individual.

We feel that, using our professional experience and expertise, we can together enable all children to achieve to the best of their ability. All the staff have high expectations of the children in terms of their behaviour and their work and this is within a Christian context of love and care, where each child feels safe and secure. Within a Christian framework we foster caring attitudes, considering and appreciating others.

We consider our school to be a team which includes governors, staff, parents, children, the church, the local community and our friends in Maxonia Primer.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to visit, we hope that you will accept our invitation to come and see for yourself the wide and varied learning opportunities which we offer.

Section 1 - Introduction

AimsMission Statement:

‘Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’ Matthew 5v16

Prestbury Church of England Primary School is a place where the Christian message is both celebrated and lived out in our day-to-day interactions with one another. It is a place where there is a focus on good character, as seen in the Fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, and lived out in good deeds and praising God. As a Church of England school we aim to provide an outstanding education for all of the children in our care, within a strong Christian framework. To ensure that Prestbury Church of England Primary School is a place where each child feels safe, is valued and respected as a unique individual, where hard work and achievement are celebrated, children are encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle and there are opportunities for each child to make a positive contribution both locally and globally.

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…At the core of our curriculum is the development of the key skills required to lead a successful life. These skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of God’s creation.

Our school verse, which is at the core of our mission statement, has a focus on good character leading to doing good deeds for God. Life in the Spirit reveals who we are, but it also requires a positive choice to live that way. A life lived in the Spirit will bear the Fruit of the Spirit as we choose to be guided by the Spirit. We want to provide as many opportunities for the children - and adults in our school community - to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit and grow in fruit., so that we are able to give thanks and praise to God for one another. It is important that Let Your Light Shine is focused on God and His work through our lives as we serve on others.

Aims (what we want to achieve):

As part of this, the school focuses on three areas: To know, share and live out the Good news of the Gospel. We hope that via our

Worship in school, RE lessons and our links with our church, St.Peter’s, that children grow in their knowledge of the Gospel and that it increasingly shapes their lives and that we are able to share this with others as we display the fruit of the Spirit and therefore shine.

To display the Fruit of the Spirit as we use our God-given talents for good. As a school, we believe that each child has God-given talents which can be academic and/or non-academic, and we want to help each child to acknowledge, nurture and

celebrate their individual talents and then to focus on using them for the good of others so that people are able to give thanks to God.

To be a Good Neighbour. One of the aims of our school is to support our children to be a good neighbour to those in the local, national and international community, as well as those in our school community. This is an ideal situation in which they are able to show the fruit of the Spirit in the widest possible sense. We want to support the children to be outward looking and to grow in their understanding of children and people in different situations and to understand our responsibility to do all that we can. This is supported by our link with our partner school in South Africa – Maxonia Primer – and the other charitable initiatives we are involved in and support throughout the year.

Objectives (how we will achieve this):

To know, share and live out the Good news of the Gospel: Daily act of worship Opportunities for children to contribute to and lead acts of worship e.g.

Prayers/House worship A strong and close partnership with St. Peter’s - community Worship/services at

church/church visits/Tidal Wave & Tsunami Links with other Christian organisations e.g. Bible Encounter Each class has a focal point e.g. Prayer corner RE teaching – Jesus books to support focus/Y6 ‘What I believe ‘course Relationships between staff:staff, pupil:pupil and staff:pupil modelled on the

Christian message Behaviour policy: to support good character, based on and informed by the Gospel

message4

To display the Fruit of the Spirit and use our God-given talents for good: In partnership with parents and children to identify, nurture and celebrate the

individual talents of each child Encourage and celebrate when children use their talents for good - within a team,

with a focus on serving/helping others etc. To help the children to understand that they are part of a community and as such,

there will be different times to ‘shine’, so sometimes they will be able to ‘shine’ by using and developing their particular talents and at other times they will shine by highlighting and supporting the talents of others.

A strong academic core to curriculum provision so that all children have a strong basis and are able to excel and use core skills effectively in a range of contexts.

A broad and balanced curriculum that supports the development of non-academic (alongside academic) opportunities, so that children are able to experience a range of areas and develop a range of interests at which they may excel.

A positive and optimistic culture and ethos so that children are encouraged and able to follow the High 5 Rule: Do our best.

Effective assessment procedures that allow for progress to be measured and celebrated and future learning planned.

Appropriate intervention to support different individual abilities. Differentiated learning and adult input planned. Independent learning so children are able to pursue their own learning and add to

the planned learning. The individual and collective talents of the staff and school community are

encouraged so that members of both have an opportunity to share, contribute and shine.

To be a good Neighbour:

Maintain and continue to develop the strong link with Maxonia Primer to support one another in our learning and provide material support to the children in Maxonia.

To have a Charity of the Year so that the children get to know over their time at school 7 varied charities. They deepen their knowledge and understanding of the good work that the charity undertakes and understand how they can contribute to it.

Via the curriculum and Collective Worship, help children to grow in their understanding and awareness of their place and contribution within local, national and global communities. This is underpinned by clear Christian values including compassion, service, humility, peace, hope, justice, friendship and trust.

As a school, support other charity initiatives within the community e.g. ideas raised by parents.

Encourage and provide the space and support for children to come forward with their own charitable initiatives.

To be a good neighbour in our school by following the High 5 rules: Be an ambassador; Display good manners to all; Care for others; Do our best; Look after our belongings and the school environment.

Opportunities for children to contribute to the life of the school and bring about positive change e.g. School Council/Ethos group.

All interactions in our school community, including the home:school partnership, will be based on courtesy, respect and trust.

Background information about our schoolPrestbury Church of England Primary school is situated on a beautiful site alongside the River Bollin, near the centre of the historic village of Prestbury.

The school was redesigned and completely refurbished in 1991, creating a calm, well-disciplined environment, with easy access to excellent resources and equipment. Until 1997, the school had seven teaching areas, a mobile classroom, a specialist music room, a large hall equipped with structural apparatus and a separate Nursery unit. Due to the increasing popularity of the school, an additional classroom and parents' welcome area was completed in September 1997. A further new classroom was added to the school in July 2013 and this allowed for an ICT suite and a new small group room within the school. An additional new classroom replaced the mobile classroom in October 2016.

We are very fortunate to have excellent facilities for the children which include a large playing field and other grassed areas, three playgrounds, one with a netball court, two adventure play areas, an orienteering course and a self-contained nursery play area.

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…

We are proud of the school's long history, which dates from 1720, its Christian foundation, its high reputation and its well-disciplined and friendly environment.

Prestbury CE Nursery Integral to our provision is Prestbury CE Nursery which offers excellent Nursery education. We offer either five mornings or five afternoons under the guidance of a qualified Nursery teacher and a Nursery assistant. Parents are also able to pay for additional ‘top-up’ sessions, so a child may attend for the whole school day. Children are admitted to the Nursery in either the September or January following their third birthday and according to the availability of places.

The Nursery offers an extensive balanced programme of activities appropriate to the pre-school child and close links are maintained with the Reception classes, ensuring an easy transition to school dependent on the availability of places. A separate booklet giving further information about the Nursery is available in school. Parents will receive a copy of this prior to their child starting in the Nursery (Nursery times are either 8.45-11.45am or 12.15-3.15pm).

Home: School PartnershipYou know your child/ren best and it makes sense that we work in close partnership with you so that your child is able to be happy at school and achieve all that s/he is capable of. It is a two-way partnership based on courtesy, respect and trust; we know that there is nothing more precious to you than your child/ren and as a parent of four young children myself, I appreciate that it is a step of trust each day that you send your child to school and that the safety and wellbeing of each child is our priority.

We have in place a Home:School agreement (please find at the end of this document) and this sets out the basis for a positive partnership.

Communication:When your child is in the Infants, and if you are in a position where you or another member of your family is able to drop off, the communication with class teachers is fairly straightforward as the teachers dismiss the children to parents/carers at the end of the day and it is usually possible to have a ‘quick word’, or arrange a time to meet. Once the children are in the Juniors and leave the school by themselves, the face-to-face contact with class teachers is not a daily occurrence.

We have set up email contact and each member of staff’s email contact is on the school website; this has proved very useful as a quick way to communicate about issues such as uniform, visit letters, homework etc.

However, where there is a significant concern, and especially where either the school and/or home feel the partnership is not working, I would ask that email is not used. It is vital, even in situations of heightened emotions, that all members of the school community display the Fruit of the Holy Spirit in all interactions and communication. On very rare occasions, people will put comments/use wording they would not use in a face to face meeting (as a parent I understand the strength of emotions when something is not right), people do not filter their feelings and that is when the mutual respect, courtesy and trust is in danger of being broken. If staff do receive an email that is not within the home: school partnership of trust, respect and courtesy then a short email outlining this will be sent to parents and they will be asked to seek a face-to-face meeting. The email from the school will simply say, ‘This email is to acknowledge the email you sent recently. In line with school policy when there is a significant concern, please would you contact the school to arrange a meeting to discuss your concerns.’

8

Page 9: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…Likewise, should you as a parent feel that any communication from the school is not within the partnership of trust, respect and courtesy then it is only right you also request a face-to face meeting.

I would like to stress that any such incidents are incredibly rare, but when they do take place, they have a significant impact for all concerned. Parents are requested to contact their child’s class teacher in the first instance and then the Key Stage Leader/Deputy Head, and in the final instance, Mr Capener. This is because the Class teacher in the first instance is best placed, with all the relevant information and the Key Stage Leader is also closely involved.

Our annual questionnaire from both staff and parents show the strength of our incredibly positive partnership between home and school.

AdmissionsChildren are admitted to our school in the September following their fourth birthday. For details about admissions to the Nursery please contact the school for further details. Parents wishing to enrol their child for a place at our school must do so by the date stated by the Local Authority prior to the September. Please note that admissions to school are made to Cheshire East Local Authority – we ask parents to complete a supplementary form for the school for our own information. If applications should exceed the number of places available, the Governing Body of the school will award places in accordance with the criteria set out in our current admissions policy.

The staff of the school have agreed to be responsible for the safety of the children for 15 minutes before the morning session. Please ensure that that your child does not arrive in school before 8.40am as there may be no supervision for the children and the school cannot be held responsible for your child’s safety.

Please help us by making sure your child is in school by 8.55am. All late arrivals are recorded, in accordance with the Government guidelines. Reception children enter school via the Nursery gate until the last half term, when they use the entrance gate used by Y1-6. The Entrance gate is supervised by a member of staff and is locked at 8.55am – often the member of staff (usually Mr Capener) will have a meeting/worship session/teaching commitment and will need to lock the gate at 8.55am promptly.

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine… Lunchtime ArrangementsSchool meals are cooked on the premises and currently cost £2.50 per day. From September 2014, Universal Free School meals for all Key Stage 1 children have been available. At Prestbury we are delighted to offer a fortnightly menu which provides a delicious range of options which can be selected by the children. The school meals service is managed by Cheshire East Catering - they are responsible for preparation of the meals and also for collection and reconciling payments. For Key Stage 2 pupils, at the beginning of term letters are forwarded from the canteen to families to place orders for lunches. If you wish to order lunches, please see the information contained in the letter. There is now the facility to pay for meals online and we actively encourage parents to do so. We also offer themed lunches such as American and French days where pupils are encouraged to try new foods. Please contact the kitchen directly if you wish to discuss school meals or have specific dietary requirements and please see www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/schoolshop if you wish to pay for your meals online.

There are special situations when children in KS2 can also receive free meals. If you think that you may be in a position to receive free meals, please contact the School Business Manager, Miss Norton.

If you no longer wish your child to have school meal or do not wish to take up the offer of Universal FSM in KS1, please let the Catering Supervisor know, giving one week’s notice in writing. Children also have the option of bringing a packed lunch - we would request that pupils do not bring nuts or nut-based products. We also ask that drinks should be brought to school in strong plastic containers and no fizzy drinks.

At lunchtime, midday supervisory staff supervise the children. The Headteacher or a senior member of staff are always available for lunchtime emergencies.

Breaktime Snacks Sweets or chocolate are not allowed in school. For breaktime, children may bring a piece of fruit if they so wish. Junior children are able to purchase snacks from the school canteen

Organisation of Classes

Children spend seven or eight years with us. Some children will join the Nursery, others in the Reception year. Some of the classes are mixed age groups so that smaller class sizes can be maintained. Every year the children move into the next academic year group and usually to a new teacher. We have two parallel Reception classes and then three Infant classes where the split is based on age. In the Juniors, we have three Lower Junior Classes and three Upper Junior classes. In the Juniors, the children are set according to ability for Maths and English and for other subjects there is a balance of ability and gender in each class. At the age of eleven, the children transfer to Secondary Education.

At the end of each year, teacher assessments are made, and parents are notified of the levels reached by their children in the annual report.

Special NeedsA number of children, at some time in their school career, will have special educational needs of some kind. We have a particular care and concern for these children and seek to assess their needs as early and as quickly as possible in line with the Code of Practice. When appropriate, we write and implement individual learning programmes to help children with special educational needs reach their potential. We also identify exceptionally able or talented pupils and meet their needs by providing appropriate and challenging learning opportunities. Copies of our school policy and Code of Practice are available from school.

Parents are kept fully informed of all aspects of provision for their children and it is when we work in partnership with the focus on the child that there is a positive impact.

Illness or Accident at SchoolIf your child becomes ill at school, you will be contacted and asked to take them home. It is very important that we have an up to date contact number in case of emergency- please ensure that if a mobile number is given, the phone is switched on during school times. In addition to your own, we need a second number. Unless urgent, parents are responsible for transporting their children to hospital or for medical treatment elsewhere. Minor accidents are dealt with by the ancillary or teaching staff and you will be notified of the incident by letter. For accidents requiring further care, we will try to contact you first, but will deal with the matter promptly.

Outbreaks of headlice happen from time to time. There are no routine inspections made in school. Parents are requested to check their child’s hair on a regular basis and report to school

13

Page 14: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…any incidence of headlice. The school nurse is in regular contact with the school and is available to give help and advice on medically related problems. Contact can be made through school.

MedicinesChildren are not to bring medicines to school. If it is essential that your child require medication during the school day, please complete an authorisation form that is available from the school office – please note that staff will not administer any medication unless an authorisation form is completed. This does not apply to children who are asthmatic and who do not require any assistance when using their inhalers. Inhalers are to be kept in the teacher’s drawer and a spare one in the staff room for infants and for the juniors, each child is to have their inhaler and a spare one in the teacher’s drawer. Sun cream is to be applied at home on sunny days when children may require protection. Lip salves, cough sweets, antiseptic cream etc are to be kept in the teacher’s drawer.

MedicalsIf for any reason your child requires a medical, you are always invited to attend. The school nurse carries out the examination in school. Occasionally, it is necessary to carry out follow up medicals and parents will be informed. When your child first joins our school, our school nurse will arrange an interview with you to discuss relevant medical history and needs.

AttendanceIf your child is unwell, please notify school by telephone, particularly in the case of an infectious disease. Please ensure that your child is fully recovered before returning to school as children who are not at their best cannot cope with the rigours of school life and the best place to be is at home being cared for by an adult. If your child has a stomach upset leading to sickness and/or diarrhoea, please keep your child off until they have been clear for 48 hours.

We cannot allow children out of school for any reason unless we have written or spoken permission beforehand.

Please note that holidays in term time are NOT authorised. In exceptional circumstances, permission may be granted, but even where there are exceptional circumstances, permission may still not be given e.g. if it is at the start of a school year or at a time when tests are taking place.

Walking, Cycling and Road SafetyWe encourage all pupils to walk all or part of the route to and from school because of the health benefits of walking, to reduce congestion near school and to be consistent with our ECO status. We offer cycling proficiency training to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. We have a ‘School Crossing Patrol’ person stationed at the top of Bollin Grove on the main road before and after school. Bollin Grove is used by many pupils, parents and cyclists and we prefer cars not to use Bollin Grove during peak times. Many parents are keen to campaign for safer routes to school and are constantly in discussion with Prestbury Parish Council to improve safety in the village for our children.

JewelleryIn the interests of health and safety, jewellery, including earrings, is NOT permitted to be worn in school. If a child comes to school wearing earrings, they will be asked to remove them.

14

Page 15: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…Car ParkingThe children are at all times encouraged to use the footpath and not stray onto the school roadway. To prevent the road outside school becoming congested and unsafe for the children, there is a car park nearby, and failing this, may we suggest parking on the left-hand side of Scott Road facing up the hill. For safety reasons, parents are requested not to use the STAFF car park. We do ask that parents show consideration to our neighbours when parking.

School CouncilOur School Council is made up of representatives from each class throughout school. The Council meets every fortnight to discuss issues raised from their classes. They are actively involved in our ECO-friendly activities, walking to school, anti-bullying and emotional literacy policies. They raise money for various charities and causes including supporting our partner school, Maxonia Primer in South Africa. Representatives take part in Network conferences and also give regular reports and presentations to the School Governing Body.

ECOOur school is keen to promote energy awareness in the home and at school. We address issues including energy production, pollution, energy efficiency, renewables and the wider issues surrounding climate change. We promote recycling to include the recycling of paper, cardboard, printer inks, school uniform, fruit and green waste. We have an ECO garden in the Reception play area which all pupils are involved with. Junior Recycling Officers and Energy Officers are nominated to ensure our school remains ECO-friendly and all stake-holders are aware and actively involved in our ECO status.

Codes of BehaviourAt Prestbury Church of England Primary School, we set high standards and expectations in terms of behaviour and attitude. This is fundamental to the ethos, values and success of our school.

Within a supportive and caring framework, we aim to develop self-discipline whilst responding positively to success and effort. Children are encouraged to meet the high standards of work and behaviour laid down in our ‘Code of Conduct’ and to share their success with members of the

15

Page 16: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…community. There are many different ways used in school to reinforce positive behaviour and effort, for example the Let your light shine certificates, Wall of Wonder, ‘Gold Book’, and ‘House’ points. So that the focus is on the vast majority of children who display exemplary behaviour, each child receives Golden Time at the end of the week – this means that the good behaviour has been recognised and celebrated. However, in cases where a child refuses to conform to our high standards of behaviour, a range of sanctions will be use. Parents will be notified at an early stage if problems arise and we trust that parents will support us in our actions. The school has a range of policies for dealing with behaviour in school.

Any use of offensive language is dealt with seriously - parents will be contacted and if a child should persist in using offensive language, they will be temporarily excluded form school.

Display good manners to all(Kindness, gentleness, goodness)

Care for others(Love, patience, kindness)

Look after our belongings and the school environment

(Faithfulness, joy, goodness)

Values

We are keen that having our clear Christian values of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control and promoting British values, does not cause confusion in the minds of the children in our care. Therefore, our approach is first and foremost to focus on our Christian values and then, when referring to British values, to always reference that if we follow our Christian values, we will be good citizens and let our light shine by making a positive contribution to our society and in that sense follow the agreed British values.

Just as with our Christian values, so with British values, we want to positively promote them, but also engage the children in opening their minds and thinking about both sets of values and voicing their thoughts and questions. To support the approach of our Christian values supporting

16

Page 17: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…the promotion of British Values, we have identified where our Christian values will underpin the British Values:

Democracy (Peace, Patience, Self-Control) The rule of law (Peace, Patience, Faithfulness, Self-Control) Individual liberty (Love, Joy, Self-Control) Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith (Love, Peace, Kindness, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Self-Control)

Educational VisitsChildren will participate in a variety of visits in connection with their work. These range from excursions into the locality today and residential visits further afield. These visits play a vital role in the learning process and it is hoped that parents will encourage and support their children. On most educational visits we ask for a voluntary contribution to cover the costs, as the 1988 Education Act states that we are not allowed to charge for activities taking place in school time.

Extra-Curricular ActivitiesWe believe in the importance and value of organised but additional activities. The range offered to the children varies according to individual members of the staff, the weather and demands from our local community. Clubs running at this present time are football, netball, string group, French, cricket, judo, orchestra, choir, cross country and recorders.

HomeworkWe recognise the value of working at home with parents whilst appreciating the children’s need to relax and spend time with their families. Homework is given on a regular basis and is centred around the basic skills of reading, Literacy and Numeracy. In Key Stage 1, homework will consist of reading, timestables and spelling. This increases into longer, more demanding tasks as the children grow older. At this stage, the children are encouraged to read widely and to carry out individual research, particularly in their final year at our school.

Playground EquipmentPlaytimes are a very special time for the children and we do our best to make sure that there are many activities for the children to participate in. We have some fixed pieces of play apparatus and we ensure that the children are clear about proper usage of this equipment. We also do not allow children to use the apparatus at the end of the school day when there is no school supervision.

Complaints ProcedureWe strive to deliver the best possible education to all our pupils and to care properly for their health, safety and welfare at all times. All the staff in school and Governors are dedicated to achieving this aim.

However, from time to time, it is possible that you feel we have not lived up to your expectations. If this is the case, please tell us. If you do not tell us, we will not be aware of your concerns and if we are not aware, there is little we can do to set things right. It is appropriate in most instances to speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance. The school has adopted a ‘complaints’ procedure that gives helpful information on the best ways of expressing any concerns. If you have a concern, please tell us about it.

Section 3 – Parental Involvement: working together

Working togetherWe hope that all parents will become fully involved in the life and work of the school. By working in partnership, fostering good relationships and developing a shared understanding, we will ensure your child has maximum support and encouragement (please see earlier section re Communication).

All parents are warmly welcome into school at any time to talk to us. During the year there are formal opportunities to discuss your child’s progress and achievements. In addition, parents are welcome to occasions such as the Harvest Festival, Sports Day, the Infant Christmas concert, Christmas and Easter church services, the Upper Key stage 2 production and the weekly Community Worship (Wednesday at 9.00-9.20am).

Written reports are sent to you at the end of the Summer term. Information on the subjects your child is learning about is shared with parents on a termly basis. Parents’ evenings are held twice a year, usually in October and March. Prior to these evenings, we have open afternoons when the children have an opportunity to share their work with parents.

School websiteOur school website address is www.prestbury.cheshire.sch.uk. A newsletter is emailed to parents each Monday and it is essential parents read this in order to know about all that is taking place at the school; paper copies are available from the school should they be required. Children are provided with a secure unique password and are able to access homework and other information.

We also have a Twitter account: Shine@PrestburyCEPrim which is a good way of seeing some of the things that take place at the school.

Collective Worship As a church school we regularly attend services at St Peter’s Church and parents are always welcome to join us. The vicar regularly leads assemblies and worship is carried out every day in school. There is a clear theme for the worship for the term – the opening paragraph of the weekly newsletter focuses on this so that parents are able to have follow-up conversations with their children.

Parents/Adult helpers in SchoolWe very much appreciate the ‘extra pair of hands’ that a helping parent/adult is able to provide. Help is appreciated with a whole range of activities - cooking, hearing children read, support in

19

the class with a practical activity etc. In line with our child protection procedures, we do insist that all adults who help out in the school complete a DBS check and meet with a member of the leadership team – please ask at the school office for the necessary form and this will outline the documentation you need to bring in to school. The school also follows the Prevent Duty to prevent Extremism and radicalisation. We also ask adults helping out in school to sign a code of conduct – this makes it clear both for the school and volunteers what is expected. If you would like to help in school please do not hesitate to contact either your child’s class teacher or Mrs Hurrell, Deputy Headteacher. It is a rewarding experience for all.

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Parents Teachers AssociationThe aim of the PTA is to build strong links between home and school as well as raise money for extra equipment for the children. The PTA organise many social, educational and fun events for all to enjoy. All parents are automatically members and are encouraged to take an active role in the group’s organisation. The PTA does a fantastic job both in terms of the money raised for ‘extras’ at school and for the opportunities for families and children to get together. Joining the PTA is a great way to get to know other parents and contribute to the school.

Parents’ ForumThe Parents’ Forum meets each half-term and its main aim is to provide a different opportunity for dialogue between the school and parents. The Parents’ Forum does not have a legal remit and parents are able to come to one meeting and not attend the next one. The agenda for a Parents’ Forum is available on the Learning Platform – we have looked at issues such as the Behaviour policy, Homework and report format and changes have taken place as a result of the meetings. In September, the first Parents’ forum is an opportunity to hear about the priorities for the school for the year ahead and for an update on the priorities for the previous year. Under the umbrella of the Parents’ Forum we also organise workshops for particular curriculum subjects or areas such as E-Safety.

The Governing BodyThe Governing Body consists of 15 members. Regular meetings are held to discuss school and monitor the efficient and effective organisation of the school. The Governing Body is supportive of the staff, pupils and parents working together to provide the highest quality education. Much of the work of the Governing body is behind the scenes, yet it is vital work in fulfilling its legal remit but also in being a ‘critical friend’ to the headteacher and school.

Section 4 - Curriculum Information

At Prestbury Church of England Primary School the curriculum we offer is:

Broad a wide range of knowledge, understanding and skills are taught.

Balanced with sufficient time allocated to each area of learning.

Relevant to the child’s own experience, to today’s world and to the society in which we live.

Differentiated matching a child’s aptitudes and abilities to what is taught.

We meet the requirements laid down by the National Curriculum for all subjects.

Core subjects: EnglishMathematics

Foundation subjects:

HistoryGeography

ScienceR.E.

Design and TechnologyArtMusicP.E.Computing

EnglishLanguage and communication skills permeate the whole curriculum and therefore a high emphasis is given to this area.

We seek to develop and foster a love of books through well stocked class libraries, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 reference libraries and the school bookshop. Reading is taught through a range of methods, which include the teaching of phonics and reading for meaning.

In the Early Years, the provision of a wealth of carefully graded reading books, comprising of our core scheme, the Oxford Reading Tree, other reading schemes and “real” books generally, enable the child to reach high standards in reading. Children are taught study skills and higher order reading skills to build upon this in the later years. The partnership between home and school is positively encouraged in the teaching of reading and is essential if a child is to make progress. I would ask that parents – in particular, dads with their sons – hear their children read on a regular basis; ideally daily.

The Literacy hour involves whole class teaching focusing on specific aspects of reading or writing through the sharing of text. Structure and content is analysed along with punctuation, handwriting, spelling and grammar. The children then engage in carefully planned activities in order to learn or practise English skills. The Literacy hour is concluded with a plenary session where the class is brought together again to share their work and to consolidate the learning objective.

Mathematics22

Page 23: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…The children are taught mental skills and learn how to apply these in order to solve problems. The different abilities within the class are targeted through differentiated questioning or organisation of the groups in the class teaching session. Work is then matched to the objective being taught in the session, where the children are supported in their learning. The lesson concludes with a plenary session and, as in English lessons, the learning objective is consolidated.

Number, shape, measures, space and handling data are all incorporated into our scheme of work that is taught in topics, supported by the Abacus Evolve Mathematics scheme.

ScienceIn Science, many opportunities are provided for the children to observe, question, devise and interpret experiments. Knowledge is acquired through scientific units of study on aspects of life processes and living things, materials and their properties, change and physical processes.

Religious Education R.E. is taught throughout the school in accordance with the diocesan/Cheshire guidelines. It helps the children to gain a better understanding of Christianity and other faiths - Judaism and Islam.

Foundation Subjects

ComputingAt Prestbury Church of England Primary School we provide excellent opportunities in Computing. All children have internet and email facilities. This allows them to develop their own knowledge and understanding. The children develop their skills during their time with us and become confident in the use of many applications including spreadsheets, databases and graphic packages.

Design Technology

23

Page 24: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine… We teach the children to design, make and evaluate a wide range of products using a variety of tools and materials. This is usually done in a one week block each term to allow a focus.

History and GeographyThrough careful planning, History and Geography are taught through themes, which have a clearly defined focus. The starting point for much of our work is to be found in the rich variety of our immediate environment and many visits are undertaken locally.

Music At our school, music encourages the expression of personal thoughts and feelings through sound, using rhythm, pitch, dynamics, timbre and texture. The teaching of music is very important for the development of the whole child in that it can contribute to the development of speech and language, mental and physical co-ordination, listening skills, imagination, social skills and confidence. It makes a major contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the child.

Children from Year 3 have the opportunity for instrumental tuition in violin, cello, flute, clarinet and brass - all are offered as a charged extra. Many opportunities are provided for instrumentalists, recorder groups and orchestra to play for a wider range of audiences; for example, in our Shine week and Spring Concert.

Music plays a key role in our school life through classroom music, instrumental lessons, performances, collective worship and extra-curricular activities.

Art and DesignIn art and design, pupils develop enjoyment and understanding through activities that combine investigating, making, knowledge and understanding. A high emphasis is placed on the quality of display in each area in order to attach value and give worth to the artwork of the children.

Physical Education and SportOur Physical Education programme includes gymnastics, games, dance, athletics, swimming and outdoor pursuits. We ensure development in these areas through our carefully planned scheme of work. All classes have at least 2 sessions of Physical Education per week. We offer competitive team games as part of our sports programme and in Key Stage 2, the children have the opportunity to represent the school in inter school’s competitions. We have football, netball, rounders, cross country and athletics teams. Practices and events are outside normal school hours. We hold an annual sports day, which has a competitive element for KS2 and aims to provide fun and equal opportunity for KS1.

In years 3-6, the children participate in swimming lessons. In both Year 5 and 6, the children have the opportunity of a residential outdoor pursuits week. The PE Premium has supported the active involvement of children in a range of sports - please see the school website for more information.

Cross Curricular SubjectsPersonal, Social Health EducationChildren are encouraged to explore a range of issues in a caring and sympathetic environment. Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, a variety of teaching and learning approaches are used that incorporate “circle time” which is used to develop children’s responses to key issues.

24

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is an integral part of our Health Education Programme and is presented within a moral, family orientated and Christian framework. It includes the use of carefully selected video materials which parents are invited to view prior to the children. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from sex education. Citizenship is promoted through our involvement with the local community and encourages the children to participate in society effectively as active, informed, critical and responsive citizens.

Curriculum OrganisationWork is matched to the ability of each child. In the Infants, for English and Maths this is done via grouping within the class and in Key Stage 2, the children are taught in ability sets.

We seek to provide appropriate activities that are matched to the individual child. Differentiation within the curriculum is ensured through a range of methods, which include providing open-ended tasks, enriching the curriculum, varying the pace and setting different tasks.

Total teaching times, excluding breaks, lunch times, assemblies and registration, are 21 hours for Key Stage 1 and 23.5 hours for Key Stage 2.

Our planning is carried out on a whole school basis so that there is progression and continuity in all subjects. The teachers work closely together so that everyone is aware of the experiences provided for each child as they move through the school. Each child is regularly assessed. This allows us to check progress and informs our future planning.

At Prestbury Church of England School, we provide a lively, active and challenging curriculum in a stimulating environment.

Assessment, Recording and ReportingThrough continuous assessment in each curriculum area, each child’s progress can be tracked through the school. These, together with annual reports, form the basis for discussion with parents. Standardised National Curriculum assessment tasks and tests are carried out at the end of each Key Stage.

In Reception, assessment is in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum

Liaison with Secondary SchoolPrestbury Church of England Primary School is part of the Fallibroome Learning Community, ensuring that there is a smooth transition to secondary education. You and your child will be

25

Page 26: Our School · Web viewThese skills are developed in a context where the children encounter a wide range of experiences and their eyes are opened to the awe, wonder and amazement of

Prestbury Church of England Primary School Let your light shine…given the opportunity to attend a variety of meetings, ask questions, meet members of staff and make preliminary visits to the school. We also enjoy good links with a number of independent schools.

Close links are also established with other Primary and Nursery schools and the school plays a full and active part as members of the district’s sports and music associations.

Community LinksA distinctive feature of our school is the close links that we have with the community we serve. Examples of this include frequently taking part in church and civic events, entertaining the senior citizens at our Summer concerts, regular visits by our musicians to the local nursing homes and support of local and national charities. During the academic year 2012/13, we supported the Christian Aid ‘Operation Christmas Child’, and the British Legion, raising considerable amounts for these charities.

Our school premises are also used by several organisations including the Choral Society, cubs and beavers and Wassadamodrama.

Maxonia PrimerWe are partnered with a school in South Africa, Maxonia Primer, which is one hour away from Cape Town. We work closely with Maxonia Primer on joint projects, enabling both schools to work together on a variety of global issues. Our partnership is based on shared Christian values where we can learn from each other and help each other gain an understanding of our place in the world. Many staff have taken part in exchange visits with staff from Maxonia Primer, funded by the British Council.

ConclusionWe hope that you have found this brochure helpful and it has answered most, if not all, of your questions and concerns. If you still have any worries or queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

We look forward to meeting you.

National Curriculum Assessments – 2019- Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

As a church school, we are focussed on the whole child and acknowledge that academic achievement and attainment is very important, but it is not the only measure of how we perform as a school, or indeed of all that our children achieve. Our mission statement, based on Matthew 5v16, 'Let your light shine that people may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven' ensures that we celebrate all 'good deeds' including academic and non-academic work and that we encourage the children and adults in our community to look to God to serve others. We are also passionate about being an inclusive school and recognise that children's talents lie in a range of areas, which are not all reflected in the school league tables and other data sources.

The school has a record of consistently high standards, reflecting the hard work by children, staff and the whole school community. We are not complacent about our position and continue to do all that we can to provide the best education to support the development of the whole child, including academic progress and achievement, within a strong Christian framework.

A Home:School agreement establishes the role and commitment of those involved in a partnership that is focussed on each child in the school.

It is a statutory requirement that a school has a Home:School agreement. However, we wanted to take the opportunity to go back to our Mission Statement and our Aims and Objectives and ensure that they are all linked together and that all of the school community had the opportunity to contribute. The Mission Statement, Aims and Objectives and the Home:School agreement were reviewed and revised in 2015 and reflect the input of staff, children, parents and governors.

The Home:School agreement is best read in conjunction with our aims and objectives (please see the school website for this).

As was stated in 2015, the Home:School agreement is what we all seek to deliver within our own responsibilities but at times, we will fall short of the expectations and as such, we need to show love and forgiveness, as well as holding each to account.

I know that if, with God’s help, we all strive to play our part as set out in this agreement then our Mission Statement will be lived out day by day.

David J CapenerHeadteacher
