I would like to take a moment to bid you, my OSL family, farewell. It has been my pleasure to serve these last ten months as your congregational council president. I had all intentions of fulfilling my term on council, but sometimes life happens and you have a change in directions. Hence, I have accepted a job with the YMCA in Greensburg, IN, and start on October 28. I may see you occasionally, as my family (Jill and Autumn) will remain in Menomonie until we can make arrangements for them to join me. I am so proud of our accomplishments and growth these past few years. Rarely a week passes that I do not hear from someone about how welcoming and vibrant our church is now. People (members and past members) who have been away, for whatever reason, state that they can “feel” and “sense” the energy and love as they enter the building! Several new families have inquired about membership and will be accepted on October 27. Please keep this atmosphere of love and acceptance forefront in all you do...it truly makes a difference! It certainly has meant the world to our family. Your support, love, and acceptance, especially during our long adoption process, was overwhelming and helped to keep us faithful and grounded. I wish you well, I thank you, and I can’t wait to hear about all your future accomplishments and endeavors. God be with you. Peace, Penni Bostelman

Hi, my name is Kim Studinger and I am your new

bookkeeper! I live in Chippewa Falls with my three

wonderful children—Charlie is 18, Eric is 14, and Beka is

10. We have a black lab mix named Motley. We love dogs

and have been dog sitting for 14 years. I have over 12

years of experience doing bookkeeping. If you cant find

me pouring over spreadsheets with a big smile on my face,

you will probably find me out on the water canoeing with

my kids. I am excited for the opportunity to join the OSL

staff as the bookkeeper and look forward to using the

gifts God has given me to bless your church!

2012 Audit Report Page 2

A BIG thank you to all who helped make the Annual Meatball Dinner on September 21, 2013, a success. Our profit

was $3,134.43! All of that will go to missions, to be decided at in November. We welcome suggestions!

Comments about the meal: We wanted people to know they could get seconds, as that was a criticism from last

year. However, the initial servings were a bit large this year, resulting in us running out of the vegetables.

This year, we added squash to the menu and cut rutabagas (excellent in 2013!) from 200# to 100#. Well, that led

to customers asking for both and running out of both!! The squash was very well received and we plan to continue

having squash and having 150# rutabagas. We also ran out of mashed potatoes due to large servings. We plan to

purchase smaller serving utensils for vegetables in 2014.

The meatballs and gravy were great as usual. Left-over meatballs and gravy ($400 worth) sold mostly Saturday

night with about 8 pints available Sunday between services. More meatball and gravy will be available in November!

Place your orders then.

The pies and desserts were well received due to great variety. Our many great bakers came through! The left-

overs were served at the coffee hour Sunday between services.

The dinner runs for three hours—4-7 p.m., with workers’ shift changes after 1½ hours at 5:30 p.m. However, 5:30

p.m. is our busiest time, which made for confusion. We plan to change shifts to three hours, with a half hour off

to eat.

We continue to have difficulty getting waitresses and bussers. We had four Boy Scouts from Christ Lutheran

helping and four female UW-Stout students helping serve and bus dishes. Of course, the Lutheran Campus

Ministry students came through again with covering cleaning the dishes! Much thanks to them. Family and friends

also helped. Totally, we gave free meals to about 20 helpers who were not OSLC members. A homeless family was

also fed at no cost.

We served a total of 392 people in 2013, up from 2012 at 340. Our take-out orders numbered 56, 2012 had 40.

Our donations in 2013 were $741, which were down from 2012 donations at $1,392. But, we had the Ludington

Guard Band pie social in 2013 with donations of $821, which we did not have in 2012.

Again, thank to those who donated your time helping, who donated food stuff such as pies, potatoes, etc. and who

donated money. Every bit helped! This was a fun project with good camaraderie. You are a great bunch to work

with.

UPDATES FROM THE LIBRARIANS!

Thanksgiving books will be on display for checking out in the Children’s Library. Christmas books will begin appearing, too, to allow more kids and families to have an opportunity to enjoy them.

Notice for Sunday School students, teachers, and parents: books and stories that coordinate with the Sunday School lessons in October, November, and December are located on the north wall shelves in the Children’s Library—look for the sign!

Sylvia Nelson, Children’s Librarian

From the Adult Library – Among the new books recently received in our adult library are Books 3 & 4 of the Sister Circle Series by Vonette Bright and Nancy Moser. These two books, An Undivided Heart and A Place to Belong, complete the series. Anyone who has read books 1 & 2, already in the OSL library, will certainly want to finish this touching story. Through struggles and triumphs, the women of Peerbaugh Place have forged a special bond of sisterhood, assisted by Evelyn Peerbaugh, the owner of the quaint Victorian boarding house. Readers will find their own place in the circle, gaining insight into their own spiritual gifts, as they laugh and cry with each of these women.

Another new book, recommended by the Church Connections Newsletter, addresses a common problem for college-bound youth. It is called Can You Keep Your Faith in College? Students from 50 Campuses Tell You How - and Why. Temptation abounds in the collegiate world. So, can you keep a God-centered, adventure-based, Christ-driven life throughout college? Abbie Smith found the answer to be a resounding YES! This book is packed with encouragement specifically for these trying years.

Check out another new book that has been added to Our Savior's Library. "On a Farther Shore: The Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson" by William Souder, was reviewed recently by the Reading Club. This book was published on the 50

th anniversary of her book "Silent Spring" and is a new portrait of Rachel Carson, founder of the

environmental movement. Published in 1962, "Silent Spring" shocked the public and forced the government to take action, despite a withering attach on Carson from the chemicals industry. This new book tells the story of one of the great reformers of the 20

th century.

Bonnie Nelson, Adult Librarian

Health Ministry November Greetings! Along with fall comes the beginning of the cold and flu season. Each year, we are reminded of ways to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses, including good hand washing. I remind you to personally do what you can to stay healthy …in doing so, you are being a good steward of your body and enhancing your work in God’s kingdom.

This month, we begin exploring the topic of mental illness, specifically ways to help reduce the stigma involved. Faith communities, such as Our Savior’s, are natural places to provide an environment for this to happen. Please plan to attend the adult forums scheduled on Sundays, November 10 & 24 (see below). If you are willing to share a part of your own journey with a mental illness, please contact myself or Pastor Heather.

Strengthening Families: Ambassadors of Hope

A message from Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan

It’s not necessarily a rarity to make a positive difference in the life of a child. Whether you’re a parent,

grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, social worker, bus driver, legislator, or taxpayer…all of us have the

opportunity to change the world by making life better for a child. But what about an opportunity to travel the

world to get to know children whose life you could change?

As the largest not-for-profit licensed child-placing agency in the State of Wisconsin, Lutheran Social Services

(LSS) of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan has been finding forever families for children of all ages, faiths, and

backgrounds for more than 60 years. Having placed children from the Philippines since the 1980s, in 2007

LSS introduced the Adoption Ambassador Program. LSS works in partnership with the Inter-Country

Adoption Board of the Philippines to place children between the ages of 9 and 15 years in stable, loving

homes. Ambassadors travel to the Philippines to meet and get to know children available for adoption. They

then return to the United States and assist in identifying forever families for these children.

There are many ways helping hands and hearts can be engaged in this project:

Consider becoming an Adoption Ambassador for a future trip. Consider becoming an Adoptive Parent to an older child. Consider inviting LSS representatives to your congregation for a more personal presentation of this

program. Keep this initiative in your prayers. Consider a monetary gift to support this initiative.

What a difference you can make!

For more information about LSS’ adoption ambassadors, please contact Dorothy Bunke at [email protected]

or (414)304-6976,or visit: http://www.lssadopt.org/AdoptionOptions/InternationalAdoption/Philippines

November is known as National Adoption Month. Check out additional

information on adoption through LSS

posted on the bulletin board across

from OSL’s Children’s Library.

JELA: Partnering for sustainable change The Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church and Japan Evangelical Lutheran Association work together to create opportunities for young Japanese Christians and those who are ‘seeking’ to participate in a life changing outreach program in Jamkhed, India. If you wish to support these efforts, please send donations to Lanny Westphal (address above). Please make sure to mark donations as “Level 2 funding (JELA): Helping Children in Need.” A gift of $25 will buy materials for an artificial leg for someone who cannot afford that expense on his/her own. This new leg will allow an individual to return to work in his/her fields, go back to a job, take care of a family, or go to school. The loss of a leg in India is usually due to car accidents, leprosy, or in some areas, land mines.

Saying goodbye to a fellow missionary It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our dear friend Pastor Andy Ellis this past July. Andy came to Kumamoto as a long-term missionary in 1952, after World War II had ended and the Occupation was still underway. In fact, he was 14 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked and Japanese people were considered the enemy. However, the testimony of another Lutheran missionary – Maud Powlas, who established a (now) very large social institution – was the first step in God’s call that led Andy to Japan. Andy travelled to Japan by freighter ship, a journey that took over two weeks. His marching orders were to bring a “bookmobile” that had been custom made for Japan. This proved to be tricky because the freighter ship was actually carrying some secret war cargo (for the Korean War that was underway), and clearing customs was a bit of a hassle! Nevertheless, Andy finally made it to Kumamoto, where his ministries began, and where he remained for the rest of his life. His assignment was to do rural evangelism and drive the bookmobile. His furlough (now called home assignment) occurred once every five years. In his memoir he wrote, “(We) took an Italian liner from Hong Kong to Suez, making port calls along the way, then on to Cairo, Palestine, Israel, Greece, Switzerland, Germany and Norway. (We) continued on to the U.K, then on to New York.” Things have sure changed since 1956! Andy was beloved by all those who met him. He was sincere, gentle, sharp as a tack, and brimming over with a love for the Japanese people. He served a congregation as a part-time pastor until a few months before he passed away at age 86 of congestive heart failure. We enjoyed going to visit him and hearing his stories of missionary life in the early days. It was our tradition to make a day of it and “go to visit Andy and his family” during the New Year’s holiday. The day of his funeral was hot and humid, typical for summer. But it didn’t keep people from coming to pay their respect to his wife and family, and to honor the life that he led. To say that he was an amazing man is an understatement. Like many things of his generation, “They don’t make ‘em like that anymore!”

The front of the chapel where Andy’s funeral was held; note the huge spray of white flowers – this is typical for Japanese funerals
