OUR SAVIOR’S LUTHERAN CHURCH JANUARY 2018 NEWSLETTER
AGAPE* (Dave
Scherer) has
inspired hundreds
of thousands of
people from
Brooklyn to
Bosnia with his
relational ministry
"Hip Hop
Outreach." Combining rapping,
dancing, storytelling and his fluency in
Spanish, AGAPE* connects with his
listeners in a way that they really "get
it". He has recorded 10 albums and
recently published a book entitled
“Agap-ology”. Many young people
saw him perform on the main stage of
the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering at
Ford Field where he was a featured
performer. His ministry was also
featured in a ABC documentary about
people tackling food insecurity in
America.
These days you can find him at Luther
Seminary where he works part-time as
the Christian Public Leader
coordinator. He is also a Qualified
Administrator of the Intercultural
Development Inventory. Page 1

Καλά Χριστούγεννα!/ Merry Christmas. The Christmas Season comes to an end as we reach Epiphany on January 6th. While this is the shortest of our “church seasons” it is just the beginning of a time to give thanks and praise.
First, we give
thanks and praise to God (at all times and places) and especially as we are able to gather as a faith family each Saturday and Sunday. To Members, Friends, and Visitors: Whether you were with us for a few weekends or most weekends, Lent Wednesday Evenings, Holy Week, Easter or Christmas Eve, thank you for worshipping with us. From Kara and myself, thank you OSL Members and Friends for your Christmas cards, gifts and baked goods. Your generosity during the season touched our hearts and we give thanks to God for you. Thank you to everyone who participated during Advent with the Mitten Tree and the ELCA Good Gifts, and those of you who Page 2
purchased Christmas Cookies in support of our Youth Group. Added thanks to the Youth Group and Sunday School students who told the Christmas story through Drama and music. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, talents, and treasures to OSL in 2017. Your generous support of our Gospel Ministry each weekend and every day, as we serve the Lord, reaches not only those within our faith family but far beyond to people of all nations. Praise God from whom all good gifts flow and Peace to all this New Year. Micah 6:8

on Mondays and Fridays.
’With Pastor Mark Van House
When Mother would be in a hurry to call any of us
three sisters to do a task or help with something she
would often get our names mixed up. “Be…
Na…Gre… I mean “Betsy”. You always knew she
was excited when the name of the family dog
(Maggie) was mixed in with the other names. Our
names are important. We want to have our names
spelled correctly when mail comes. Often, we can
tell the difference between a business call and a
friendly phone call by the names used to address us.
January 1, the first day of the new year is
designated by the church as “Name of Jesus”. The
whole gospel lesson is just one verse: “And at the
end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was
called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he
was conceived in the womb.” Luke 2:21.
As was the custom, Mary and Joseph took their
infant son to the temple on the eighth day for a
ritual of naming. There is power in a name. It
gives a frame of reference for everything that will
be known about that person. Just speaking the
name will bring to mind all the details of
personality, accomplishment, values, and make up
of the person. It was an angel, Gabriel, who told
Mary that her child should be named “Jesus.”
While this name is not frequently used in the United
States today, Jesus which is the Greek form of the
Hebrew name Joshua was very familiar 2,000 years
ago. When people heard the name Jesus, they
would immediately recognize the match with the
Hebrew meaning “he will save.” The name of Jesus
is known by all Christians as a name above all
names. He is Savior, Emmanuel, Christ, the Good
Shepherd who calls us by name.
It was in the city of Antioch in the first century that
Page 3
followers of Jesus were first called Christians. To
take on the name of Christ means we have the
privilege of belonging to God’s family. We receive
grace upon grace, not because of anything we
deserve but because God loves us and gives us his
name. In faith, we have the ears to hear Jesus
calling us to eternal life. In faith, we have the eyes
to recognize the mark of the maker in all of
creation. In faith, we have the tongue to confess
Jesus Christ as Lord, our Savior and King. In faith,
we strive to live up to the reputation of God’s
people.
As this new year begins, listen for God calling you
my name. Worship regularly so that you may
gather with other Christians in praising and praying
to God. Serve in Jesus’ name in the community
around us. Let the spirit of God fill you with hope
and light and truth as you share the name of Jesus
with those who might need a new hope in 2018.

As 2017 closes, I feel very thankful. Thankful for a ministry team that works well together. I am thankful for a Sunday School staff that is caring and dependable each week. I am thankful for all the Sunday School children who come each week eager to learn and their families who bring them.
I am thankful for a Sunday School Christmas Program that helps the children learn about the birth of Jesus while blessing the congregation at the same time. Thank you to LuAnn Klevan for her organization, Jerry Klevan for his “Grandfatherly” skills, Cheryl Runck for costume design and to Alexys Harwood for volunteering to be extra hands on that very busy day.
I am thankful to a caring Congregation who supports the Education Ministry at OSL through their prayers, supply donations, and weekly offerings toward the budget that helps us continue.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve OSL in this way. You are my church family and I am grateful for you.
Although January brings cold, wind and snow; OSL is bringing worship and fellowship opportunities for members and friends of members. On Saturday, January 6 at 5:30pm worship, we welcome Agape for an exciting worship experience with pizza to follow. On Sunday, January 7 at 9:00am worship and 10:15pm Sunday School, Agape will be with us to celebrate worship and Sunday School. We are very excited to be a part of this opportunity.
Sunday, January 28th at 1pm-2pm the Education Ministry Team is bringing back Sunshine and Roses for a painting activity for children and from 2-4pm will be painting for adults. This was a popular event last year and we are excited to have Penny back with us! There will be a small registration fee, the remainder will be paid by the Clifford Kumm Gift. All are welcome! You do not have to be a member of OSL.
Sunday, January 7th is our first day back to Sunday School and Wednesday, January 10th will be our first day back to our Confirmation/Youth schedule.
2018 is going to be a great year at OSL!
Blessings to all, Gina Jahn Part-Time Education Coordinator [email protected] 507-251-1610

The service group lists are of people in the congre-
gation who are asked to bring items for special
events at the church. The lists have gone through
some changes to try to even out the lists with
people who can be available to respond in service.
For a number of reasons, there are people who are
not included on the lists (shut-in, live out of town,
have indicated a desire not to be contacted, etc.)
Thank you to all the people in Our Savior’s who
live out their faith in caring support of the
ministries of the church.
