Every time he went to the yard he armed himself to defend and protect his family and home from marauders and villains. One day he was sneaking around the barn, saw something out of the corner of his eye and quickly shot – and to his horror he saw that he had killed his little brother’s pet duck. This duck was much beloved – it was his constant companion–following him around the yard whenever he was out. Billy was horrified! He quickly decided to hide his terrible mistake so he dug a hole and covered it up again with dirt and hay. That night at dinner his little brother wondered where his little duck companion went. He asked everyone, “have you seen my duck?” Everyone responded no and all Billy could do was to stare at his food. He felt awful. The next day Billy and his older brother were out chopping wood. The older brother said that he saw what happened and that if Billy didn’t do all of his chores he’d tell their mom and dad. Billy was miserable! So for a few days he worked his chores and his brothers. He was tired and he was angry and he was scared. It was about a week later when the older brother came to Billy and wondered why his chores weren’t finished. Billy said he wasn’t going to do them anymore. The older brother said “Ok then, I’ll just tell mom and dad what you did to the duck!” And he started walking towards the house. Billy proudly answered back, “I already told them about the duck and they told me that although I can’t use my BB gun for a month that I am forgiven.” Billy had been freed from the burden and slavery of guilt and fear, freed by forgiveness. By confessing his sin he was restored to a right relationship with his father and mother. He didn’t have to hang his head in shame any longer, he didn’t need to walk in fear that someone would find out. He didn’t have to worry that someone would tell on him. Doesn’t that story resonate with us Christians? Because of the cross and tomb and resurrection of Jesus our Father in heaven has already declared us forgiven! In the waters of Baptism God has washed away the stain of our sin and the accuser has nothing with which to charge us any longer! We can go to Christ and confess our sins without fear knowing that there is nothing we can ever do that is beyond the saving blood of Jesus. If that’s not something to celebrate I don’t know what is! May you have a Blessed and Happy Independence Day everyone! See you in worship! Pastor Jeanne

FROM OUR PASTOR…

Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

O nce upon a time there was a young farm boy named Billy who received a very treasured BB gun for his birthday one year.

He was

tired and he was angry and he was scared.

☧Pastor Jeanne

2017 WELCA

SPRING GATHERING

The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Northeast Conference, held their Spring Gathering on Saturday, April 29th at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. The day got off to a running start with registration and fellowship beginning at 8:30 a.m. Opening music in the sanctuary included the theme hymn, We Are One in the Spirit as attendees gathered. The 2017 theme of “Sisters in Christ” was used to

encourage guests to get to know their “sisters” throughout the day. Pastor Deb Valentine of St. Mark’s, Bloomfield led the group in opening devotion and prayer centered on the theme of friendship and love. With a total of 89 women in attendance and a total of 20 congregational units represented, it was a fitting devotion to start the day. Special guests included Elysia McGill, Vice President, and Sandy Terry, Treasurer of the Nebraska Synodical Women’s Organization (NSWO). During the business meeting, a new slate of committee

members was elected to serve and prepare for the 2018 Spring Gathering. Those elected and installed include: Conference Coordinator Trisha Peters, Our Savior, Wayne

Planning Committee Cluster One – Rose Vawser, St. Mark’s, Bloomfield Cluster Two – Cheryl Wragge, Christ Lutheran, Pierce Cluster Three – LaWanda Novotny, St. Luke’s, Stanton Cluster Four – Mae Greve, Salem, Wakefield

Nominating Committee Cluster One – Marlo Johnson, Trinity, Bristow Cluster Two – Janice Wilkerson, Immanuel, Coleridge Cluster Three – Mary Bruns, St. Peter’s, Pender Cluster Four – Phyllis Rahn, Our Savior, Wayne

In addition, an invitation for the 2018 Spring Gathering was extended by Immanuel Lutheran Church of Coleridge. The day’s offering was divided ½ to Churchwide Women’s

Organization, ¼ to Nebraska Synodical Women’s Organization, and ¼ to ELCA Good Gifts – Send a Girl to School. The generosity of our Conference was evidenced by the offering totaling $2,247. The tangible offering of purses filled with essential items for victims of domestic violence was designated to Haven House of Wayne and South Sioux City as well as Bright Horizons of Norfolk and O’Neill. An unbelievable 297 purses were filled and distributed to those organizations. What an amazing project! To highlight the morning, Elysia McGill introduced the

video Bible Study courtesy of Bishop Brian Maas. He focused on the theme verse from Proverbs 31, “She is strong and graceful as well as cheerful about the future.” His

message centered on the concept that we should read scripture daily and study the catechism gladly as it is a comfort. He also focused on the Reformation and the 500 year anniversary since the writing of the 95 Theses. He encouraged all to study, share, and live faith. Elysia provided dynamic conversation throughout the video, and shared her own testimony of faith with the women in attendance. The busy day continued with workshop sessions following

the Bible Study. Available workshops included: Lynette Krie–Putting Your House in Order, Jen Van Meter–Human Trafficking, Kristol House-Schwenn–Healing Touch, and Packing the purses for Haven Houses and Bright Horizons. All attendees were also treated to yoga with Charissa Loftis of Wayne who led a variety of exercises to help with range of motion and improved mobility. A delicious lunch was prepared and served by the Women

of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. After lunch, attendees were welcomed back into the church sanctuary by the music of Sherie Lundahl of Laurel. She started out by leading the theme hymn in a duet with pianist Laurel Johnson. She provided several Easter and traditional hymn favorites inspired by her country and gospel roots. To conclude the day, Pastor Deb Valentine provided an

inspirational sermon sharing her experiences about how God has sent her “sisters” to help her get through life’s challenges. She also shared stories of “sisters” in the Bible such as Ruth and Naomi. Pastor Deb also presided at communion and closed with a prayer and hymn singing. Several hours of planning and setup go into making the

Spring Gathering happen each year. Special thanks is given for the 2017 Planning and Nominating Committee as well as the Women of St. Mark’s Lutheran in Bloomfield for all of their hard work in hosting this year’s event! Following the NSWO’s recent Board meeting in Axtell, NE

on May 20th, plans are already in the works for the 2018 Spring Gathering! The date is slated for April 28, 2018 at Immanuel Lutheran in Coleridge. The upcoming theme is “Daughters of the Spirit,” and the Planning and Nominating Committees may be contacting you to share your talents to make this another wonderful Gathering! Stay tuned! In Christ, Trisha Peters Northeast Conference Coordinator

JULY GREETINGS

W OW! Another month has gone by so quickly, seems like I just wrote my

last newsletter article. Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. At our June Executive Board meeting, Karma gave the

devotion using Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children; but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.” Meaning a spiritual inheritance is more precious than any money that would remain. We heard a “Thank You” for the $150 we sent to the

Tanzania Hunger/East Africa Drought Relief Fund, from the Nebraska Synod. We also heard a Thank You from Careage of Wayne for the lap robes our Quilters gave them. Five quilts were completed on Sewing day. Next Sewing day is Monday, July 24 at 9:30 a.m.. Six Visitation members signed cards and made some visits

last month. Charity Circle held a family picnic in the park for their last

meeting of the summer. They will meet again September 20th. Joy Circle met at Brookdale and had 29 ladies attend on June

14. Thelma gave the devotion using 1 Corinthians 13, “Faith, Hope & Love”. Since it was Flag Day, our program was about the “Flag.” Three members of the Wayne Consolidated Veterans Organization did the folding of the flag. Duane Schroeder explained the reason for each of the 13 folds as Curt Brudigam and Layne Beza made the folds. Duane also gave a short talk on the Flag and Patriotism. Lynette Lentz then gave the ladies a quiz on the Flag and our National Anthem. We closed by singing My Country, Tis of Thee and the Lords Prayer. Decorations and food was done in Red, White & Blue. The next Joy Circle meeting will be on Wednesday, July 12 at 2pm There are 10 days left to donate some “In-Kind-Gifts” to send

with Deb and Diane to the Triennial in July. If you would like to donate, the items needed are for Men, Women, and all age Children. There is a box in the Narthex for these items. The list is as follows: RAZORS; BAR OF SOAP; SKIN LOTION; TOOTH BRUSHES; SOCKS AND UNDERWARE (ANY COLOR AND ANY SIZE) AND WHITE T-SHIRTS (ANY SIZE). We thank you for your support in this project!

OWL’S BIBLE STUDY— Thursday, July 20, 10am

The Greatest Story: Bible Introduction introduces key people, places and events of scripture from Genesis through Revelation. For July the topic is: The Power of God for Salvation: The

Letters of Paul–the man, the mission, and the message. Each of Paul’s letters deals with an important issue in the life of a faith community. God’s salvation is for both Jews and Gentiles. Christ alone has the power to save us. It is by grace that we are set free to love and serve our neighbor. This study, led by Deb Hammer, is held once monthly on

the third Thursday at 10:00 am in the multi-purpose room.

SENIORS SERVICE PROJECT— Sleeping Mat Ministry:

Sleeping mats are made from plastic shopping bags. This is a great way to recycle all those plastic grocery bags! (A basket is available in the narthex to collect CLEAN bags.) There are several steps to preparing the bags before the mats can be crocheted…so there are opportunities for all to participate!

Join us on Thursday, July 6 and Monday, July 17 from 9–11am. (For more information, contact Deb Hammer or the church office.)
