DISTINCTIVE EXCELLENCE
• Fulfilling Student Promise: Each of our students will be able to discover and fulfill their promise through an integrated program of academics, athletics and arts that also provides opportunities to personalize their learning, leadership and service experiences.
• Staff Excellence: Recognizing that the most important element of fulfilling student promise is surrounding them with outstanding staff, we will attract, develop, and retain a team of truly excellent staff as well as engage in succession planning to ensure a high level of staff excellence is maintained over time.
• Facilities & Technology: The physical environment in which our students learn and play as well as the tools they have at their disposal will be aligned with how education is to be delivered in the 21st century.
LIFELONG ENGAGEMENT
• Celebrating Diversity: We will increase our ability to provide financial assistance to excellent students and pursue greater geographic diversity in boarding to achieve an active mix of economic, geographic and ethnic backgrounds that will enrich the experience of all who attend and work at the school.
• Energizing Relationships: We will focus on increasing meaningful engagement with our students, alumni, parents, staff, grandparents and friends in order to foster strong, positive and lifelong relationships and build a sense of one united school.
• Culture of Philanthropy: We will build a culture of philanthropy so that all community members participate in philanthropic support and service to the school and celebrate our success in providing financial aid to mission-appropriate students.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTH
• Understanding, Serving and Growing our Market: To effectively investigate, assess and execute on strategic opportunities that fulfill our vision and mission, the school will strive to fully understand and serve its current market as a day/boarding school located in Victoria, BC.
• Financial Stability and Capacity: To ensure financial stability and the capacity to finance our strategic goals, the school will have full enrollment in boarding and day, exercise prudent operational spending, maintain an appropriate and affordable level of debt, and keep adequate reserves for contingencies.
• Governance: Believing firmly that good governance is the cornerstone of any organization’s success, we will revisit traditional areas of governance and expand on new ones such as risk management to ensure we reflect best practices, remain current and execute effectively.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS
This is my last annual report as Board Chair, the position to which my colleagues have elected me for each of the past seven years and it has been an honour and privilege for me to serve our School.
In my time as Chair, I have been consistently amazed by and grateful for the dedication and contributions of all of you who have been part of this community. Some of your contributions have had a high profile but most of them have been under the radar
or behind the scenes. No matter how visible, all contributions have strengthened us immensely and positioned us for an exciting future. Consider for a moment what it took to accomplish just these events:
• Centennial celebrations for both of our founding schools in 2006 and 2010
• Revitalization of School House in 2007 and the opening of the Monkman Athletic Complex and Graves Squash Centre in 2008
• Becoming the first Independent school in Canada to create a Director of Learning position in 2010
• Launch of a new Strategic Plan in 2012
• Doubling of the SMUS Endowment Fund between 2007 and 2014, which now stands at $10.3 million
Truly the gifts of your time, talent and resources have been essential to the success of our school.
In addition to the current Board of Governors and the Advisory Governors, I would like to recognize the services of past Governors who helped me in my duties as Board Chair.
The school has been served very well by Susan Ben-Oliel ’82, Stacey Jessiman de Nanteuil ’86, Jay Hayden, Dave Wizinsky and Mary Mullens as part of our Governance committee. The Facilities and Investments committees were led by a very enthusiastic and strong supporter in Eric Heffernan ’73. Board representatives from the SMUS Faculty Association, the SMUS Parents’ Auxiliary and the SMUS Alumni Association gave freely of their time to ensure these independent associations had a voice at the table. Lynn Forbes and Dave Edwards were the force behind our 2012 Strategic Plan, which is the life-blood of the school and the roadmap leading us to a successful future. Stephen Martin, my predecessor as Board Chair, showed great energy and strong leadership. He left behind a Board that was powerful in talent and strategic thinking and I am grateful to him.
But schools are all about educating and learning; about preparing students for “higher learning and for life.” Our Head of School, Bob Snowden, is one of the best in our country. We can all be thankful for his leadership.
DAVID ANGUS ’62 Chair, Board of Governors St. Michaels University School Society
MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
The School year 2013-14 was a triumph in so many respects. One of the significant trends we will be seeing in the next decade – personalization – is upon us, displayed in the increasing variety of special programs students want to pursue. In the Junior School, we have stretched to include home-schooled students; in the Middle School and Senior School, we are embracing programs designed to suit the passions and strengths of athletes and scholars. It is an exciting time.
Our Mission says we “seek the excellence in all of us;” that focus on the potential of each individual student is entirely consonant with this growing emphasis, and we find it exciting.
Our School pursues academic success in an environment where the character and self also grow. Student experience outside the classroom – in service, the arts, sports, extracurricular adventures – ensures that we educate the whole student. Our School has always pursued this type of education and will continue to do so. For the sake of the School’s health and robustness, one hopes that this emphasis strikes a chord with families who have school-age sons and daughters. If this year is any indication, that chord is ringing clearly: we have had our best admissions year on record, filling the school beyond expectations.
One of the reasons for this strength, we believe, is the admissions initiative we launched last January: The Best School Year Ever. This initiative was a contest, in which the grand prize was a year’s full boarding tuition. We opened the contest to students in Canada and the United States (time and legal complexities prevented us from going further afield), and our goal was to reach students who might otherwise never have thought of boarding school. It was a success. We enrolled all three finalists – from San Diego, Texas and Abbotsford, BC. We also enrolled four additional students from the contest. Already, as I write this message, these students are making a difference.
Another marker of people’s belief in the future of the School is our annual Dream Big Fund performance. This year saw our Dream Big Fund exceed its target – again the highest sum ever – a credit to our Advancement Office and especially past Annual Fund Director, Lori Adam, and her successor, Shara Campsall. Ours is a wonderful cause to support.
When our School was last accredited, in 2006, by Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), the visiting team commented on a remarkable culture of continuous reflection and improvement throughout the School. The School works constantly to provide an education where students can thrive. We want them to both discover and pursue their strengths and passions. Our teachers are committed to students’ welfare, safety and their great promise. Vivat.
BOB SNOWDEN Head of School St. Michaels University School

“Parents working together to support excellence in education”The SMUS Parents’ Auxiliary Society is an important contributing organization within the SMUS community. A group of parent volunteers, the Parents’ Auxiliary organizes events, raises and distributes funding through allocations that support excellence at the school and build a strong community.
Parents’ Auxiliary Events and Fundraisers for 2013-14> Used Uniform Sale: Offered in the gym during school
registration and one day a month from the Derby and Shelbourne location. 2013-14 was another great year thanks to the support of our families and a dedicated team of volunteers.
> Welcome Coffee Parties: Coffee events to welcome new and existing families at the Junior School and Richmond Road campus kicked off the school year.
> Parent and Family Socials: Numerous small social events were held for parents including an evening at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, class pub nights, and Mom’s Night Out dinners. The PA also hosted family-friendly events organized by class reps.
> Junior School Luau: A new event for the Junior School, this Hawaiian-themed afternoon saw Junior School families enjoying tropical fare and learning to hula on the Richmond Road campus.
> Christmas Gala: This fun and sophisticated family celebration at the Crystal Gardens hosted over 800 SMUS families, boarding students, alumni and faculty. This event has become a wonderful SMUS tradition bringing the community together to share a meal, some music and holiday cheer.
> Pizza Days: Pizza lunches for participating students at the Junior, Middle and Senior schools, supported by a group of active volunteers who come out to help every week.
> Boarders without Borders: Many boarding students visited Victoria SMUS families for a home-cooked meal and family time. Later in the year during Alumni Weekend, boarders invited their host families to residence, giving them a peek into boarding life. Local SMUS families also participated in the Boarders Home Stay Program, hosting boarders over long weekends.
> Halloween: Wenman Pavilion was transformed into a popular haunt as parents served up hot chocolate and popcorn upstairs while students led a haunted house downstairs. The evening ended with a fireworks display.

> Quiz Night: This fun, lively and sometimes competitive event continued to be popular with one event in the fall and a second evening in the spring.
> Staff Appreciation Lunches: Families paid tribute to the staff at all three schools with a menu of home-cooked dishes and gratitude.
> Alumni Weekend Family Day: Sponsored activities such as a pancake breakfast and bouncy castles to bring the community together for a day of fun.
Parents’ Auxiliary ScholarshipThe PA continues to use a portion of the funds it raises to support the endowed scholarship in its name. The scholarship is awarded each year to an all-round student in financial need who has demonstrated active and spirited commitment to community service and leadership.
Allocations for 2013-14The PA contributed $69,461 worth of funding and support to the school last year, spread over all three campuses. Some of the highlights included:
> Theatrical lighting: A partnership project between the PA and the Annual Fund saw the Richmond Campus Gym light up with the installation of professional event lighting and equipment to support concerts, assemblies and events for years to come.
> Investment in our academics, athletics and arts programs: Projectors, smart boards, white boards, AV equipment including a DVD player and video camera, team uniforms, indoor gym bikes, paddle boards, club materials including robotics kits and knitting supplies, and lots and lots of iPads, iPad Minis and Chromebooks, to name just a few.
> Brain Awareness Week: The PA partnered with the school during Brain Awareness Week for the second year in a row to support a guest speaker that held sessions for students, faculty and parents.
We look forward to many more years of requests and initiatives that make the SMUS community a place to be proud of.
“We are committed to advocacy on behalf of SMUS to ensure fulfillment of the SMUS mission”The SMUS Alumni Association is a group of alumni led by a volunteer board that works with the school to foster strong ties between SMUS and its former students.

> Alumni continued to support the beginning of the school basketball season, again staging an alumni basketball night that saw an alumni women’s team take on the SMUS senior girls and an alumni men’s team challenge the SMUS senior boys. Those games were preceded by a junior boys inter-squad games and followed by an alumni reception.

Career Day provides an opportunity for students to meet and discuss with presenters working in various industries and fields. The keynote speaker was Tracy Samra ’86, who is a senior executive, negotiator and lawyer with over 20 years of experience specializing in Aboriginal law and governance.
> Alumni receptions were held in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Boston and Washington DC.

On behalf of the Finance committee and the Board of Governors, I am pleased to report that the School’s auditors have once again issued an unqualified report to the financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2014. Highlights from the audited financial statements, with comparative data in brackets, include:
> The School’s financial position remained strong with a combined net fund balances of over $35.1 million ($33.2) including $23.4 million ($23.1) in the capital funds and $10.5 million ($9.0) in the endowment fund.
> The School’s long-term debt stands at $10.8 million ($10.9 million) with annual debt-servicing costs representing 5% (5.2%) of gross operating revenue, which is well within the 10% allowed under the Society’s bylaws.
> There was a small gross operating surplus after inter-fund transfers of $52,712 ($18,658), representing 0.18% (0.07%) of total expenditures.
> There was a $100,000 transfer to the contingency funds in the current year ($100,000).
> The majority of the increase in operating expenses is in classroom instruction, student support, and educational administration. These increases are a result of increased enrollment, the addition of the second Grade 1 class at the Junior School and the continued implementation of the strategic plan.
> There were both additional revenue and expenses related to the summer programs and the new rowing facility.
We remain focused on ensuring that the School is able to meet its’ long-term strategic goals both in the quality of the program provided and maintaining the School’s financial strength. Enrollment for 2014- 15 is strong and that, combined with a continued focus on costs and debt management, will ensure that the School continues to provide value for all of its students.
