Activities & Achievements 2018

1. Education Projects for disadvantage children and youth

Our objective is to support children and youth affected by the war. The aim of our education

projects is to motivate these children, provide them with the ability and resources to be

qualified in their chosen profession, be instrumental in assisting employment for others and

to help rebuild our nation.

At present students are being supported by educational scholarships, the supply of basic

nutritional needs and the provision of books and stationary needed for their education. Our

aim is to concurrently provide livelihood facility for them so that in time they will be in a

position to self-fund their studies and reduce their dependency.

Tharaniga’s success story

I am Balakrishnan Tharaniga and I live in Kilinochchi. My family were affected by the war. My father sustained

physical injuries during the war and my mother is disabled. I have a younger sister.

While my father was working very hard and struggling to support my sister and me with

our studies, we were fortunate to encounter Reverend Joshua. Reverend made it possible

for me to receive monthly financial assistance through Kaveri Kala Manram - Vanni

Hope. Due to this help, I have been able to continue my studies and even attend tuition

classes.

My father had difficulty taking us to school on his push bike but now thanks to KKM –

VH we can afford to go to school on an auto [three wheeler].

I also appreciate the advice and guidance given to me by KKM staff.

I scored 8 A’s in my O’Levels and am hoping to score well in my A’Levels also. My dream is to study

medicine and serve my community.

One day I hope to help other under privileged children with their studies – just like KKM Vanni Hope helped me.

Sugirtha’s success story

My name is Suhirtha Subramanium and I live in Malayalapuram, Kilinochchi. I am one of 5 siblings and including my

parents there are 7 in the family.

My father works on a farm. My sister and I are students.

When my parents had difficulty meeting the financial expense of my higher education we were

fortunate to come in contact with Kaveri Kala Manram.

Mr Thevananth Sir, through Kaveri Kala Manram – Vanni Hope granted me an education

scholarship. This enabled me to purchase necessary stationary, pay for my tuition fee and

examination fee. In my A’Levels in the Maths stream I scored A and 2S and was placed 40th in my

district.

I have been given a seat in the Eastern University in Trincomalee.

I intend to study well and gain an excellent qualification. Once I have qualified, my wish is to

support other students like me Through Kaveri Kala Manram.

Sangeetha’s success story

My name is Sangeetha Mahendran and I live in Krishnapuram. I am one of 3 children. My

father’s daily wage was stretched to support the education of his three daughters.

In 2017, I completed my A’Level in the Commerce field. I scored 3 A’s and was ranked 7 th in

the district!

Through Kaveri Kala Manram – Vanni Hope, Mr Lakshman Swaminathan and Mrs

Renu Swaminathan have supported me with a scholarship fund. This fund has

helped pay for my tuition fee, exam fee and course fee.

I have secured a place in Sri Jayawardenepura University to follow a course in

‘Public Special Management’.

I hope KKM – VH will be able to continue to help students like me.

02. Development projects

Our main objective is to focus on the disadvantaged, disabled and people who were affected

by the war and who are living below the poverty line. We believe giving handouts alone does

not help people overcome their current situation. With this in mind, we have been focusing

on exploring their talents and strengths and then providing them with the opportunity to

become self-sufficient. With this aim in mind our projects focus on providing water, soil,

plants and animal husbandry in order to for people to generate a sustainable income.

3. Spiritual development project for resettlement community

Although education and livelihoods are essential for survival, these alone are insufficient

in raising the spiritual wellness of our community. Spirituality by instilling ethics,

morality and code of conduct is essential for the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of a

community.

With this in mind we are involved in resurrecting damaged and neglected temples by

empowering and motivating the local community with financial assistance to rebuild and

help with the resumption of worship.

To instil in children the concept that religion is not merely worship but a prescribed way

of life, we have commenced Araneri schools on Sundays and hope to raise the spiritual

wellbeing of these children. 170 children attend these classes. Nutritious food is supplied

to these children on the day.

To encourage and develop the spiritual wellbeing of our youth, RamarBhajan is

conducted. About 50 to 60 youth are involved in RamarBhajan where they gather and sing

bhajans weekly at the local temple. Over the months of November, December and January

bhajans are sung daily, initiating at the temple and progressing along the roads to

individual homes.

4. Community coordination projects

Staffs of KKM and Vanni Hope are employed at three levels – as office staff, field workers

and as community workers. We focus on developing the individual strengths of our staff,

providing leadership skills and devising methods to improve their livelihood. During the

reporting period, management and leadership skill of 4 such staff members have been

advanced.

5. Youth’s skill development through Sports activities.

We aim to promote the sporting talents of our youth both at schools and clubs. Children here

have been deprived of the opportunity to compete at the national level over the past 40 years.

For the second-time Battle of Vanni was initiated where 21 clubs competed in a cricket

tournament. This was done in association with the Kilinochchi cricket association. On

account of this venture the Kilinochchi cricket association has been recognized by the

national cricket board. Consequently, Kilinochchi cricket association now has a standing in

the cricket board of the Northern Province.

6. Project Co-ordination, implementation, evaluation and reporting

It is our determination that every single action taken by this association be honest,

honourable and beyond reproach. Every measure is taken to make our dealings as

transparent as possible.

We encourage direct communication between our sponsors and beneficiaries, be it via

letters, phone calls or personal visits. We have ensured an internationally recognized auditor

has access to all our records.

By following this code of conduct we hope to positively influence the lives of not just a

fraction but of the entirety of the war affected community. We wish to extend our sincere

gratitude to each and every sponsor who has managed to touch the lives of our

beneficiaries.

We wish to thank all the Vanni Hope donors who have contributed to our projects. Finally

our most sincere and heartfelt thanks goes to our untiring field staff for their dedication

and hard work to improve the lives of war affected communities.
