SECOND SUNDAY

In the first reading, Samuel does not recognize God calling his name; Eli instructs him to

respond, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul

declares the body is to be used, not for sin, but to glorify God as a temple of the Holy Spirit.

In today’s Gospel, Andrew and Simon Peter begin to follow Jesus. Samuel does not

recognize God’s voice, but he is alert and obedient, listening and ready for action. We hear

If you are a gentleman over the age of 18 years, why not come out and see what we are all about ~ we can do good things together! The Men’s Club was formed to foster fraternity and attend to the needs of the Cathedral community.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18 to 25 January 2018

Celebrated Sunday, 21 January ~ 2:00 PM at St. Brice’s Anglican Church with Reception to Follow Every year, between January 18-25, is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, an annual ecumenical celebration. Christians around the world are invited to pray for the unity of all Christians, to reflect on scripture together, to participate in jointly-organized ecumenical services, and to share fellowship. Today, we live with divisions even as we yearn for the unity promised and commissioned by Christ. Many Christians now strive to heal these divisions, yet honour our diversity, through ecumenical dialogue, common action, and relationship-building.

The theme for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity comes from the Caribbean region: “Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power” (Exodus 15:6). Today, Caribbean Christians of many different traditions see the hand of God active in the ending of enslavement. It is a uniting experience of God’s saving action which brings freedom. The Caribbean ecumenical team chose the song of Moses and Miriam (Ex 15:1-21)—a song of triumph over oppression—as the motif of this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

The 104

th World Day of Migrants and Refugees is

celebrated this weekend on January 14. The theme of Pope Francis' Message is "Welcoming, protecting, promoting and integrating migrants and refugees" . In his Message, the Holy Father recalls that the solidarity of the Church "must be concretely expressed”. Dear brothers and sisters! “You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:34). Throughout the first years of my pontificate, I have repeatedly expressed my particular concern for the lamentable situation of many migrants and refugees fleeing from war, persecution, natural disasters and poverty. This situation is undoubtedly a “sign of the times” which I have tried to interpret, with the help of the Holy Spirit, ever since my visit to Lampedusa on 8 July 2013.

Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Mt. 25:35-43). The Lord entrusts to the Church’s motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future. This

solidarity must be concretely expressed at every stage of the migratory experience – from departure through journey to arrival and return. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will, who are called to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities. Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd

A great big thank you to Msgr. Dave for Blessing our Good Shepherd Atrium. Another big thank

you to Suzanne Charette for leading the young people in Liturgy of the Word, and to everyone who came out and pitched in to make our gathering a success. Epiphany is a wonderful time for us to gather and celebrate our faith traditions and families. Happy New Year!

Congratulations Gavin on the publication of your Easter drawing, ‘God is not dead!’ Gavin’s drawing was recently published in the annual CGSUSA Journal 2018, with the article titled; ABC’s of Christianity. The article refers to the Resurrection narrative as an essential Christian message in the life the child because it is received with joy. This picture is a wonderful expression of joy where the mystery of the child meets the mystery of God. This is why Gavin has stated; ‘God is not dead!’ Joy is at the heart of the relationship. The article also points out the use of the colour yellow in children’s drawings. Yellow represents Light and Joy. A Church Destroyed

Cairo (AsiaNews) - Despite the heavy police presence, the church of al Amir Tadros, in the small village of Kafr at the Wasline, south of Cairo, was attacked and profaned on December 22. After Friday prayers, about 5,000 Muslims came out of the village mosque to encircle the village's only church. In hundreds they invaded it, breaking everything they found on their path: benches, chairs, fans, microphone and speakers, liturgical clothes, crosses and icons, tents, sacred books. Some fundamentalists had circulated rumors that they were planning a bell tower. This unleashed the wrath of the Muslims, who gathered in front of the building to oppose the decision with force. They attacked the church and the benefactor who had offered the land of the house to the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate. He and three members of his family were injured and taken to the hospital. The Copts, as Christians in Egypt are called, are about 10-12% of the Egyptian people and constitute the largest Christian community in the country, and also the oldest in the Middle East. They celebrate the Nativity on two dates: Catholics celebrate December 25 according to the Gregorian calendar, while the Orthodox celebrate January 7, according to the older Julian calendar.
