We received some excellent feedback from parents on our Facebook Survey and look forward to holding a similar event at the same time next year. Just a reminder that this week is the last week we can offer refunds on our Durack dollars. We had a great start to the term with NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) celebrations happening on Thursday 24 th July. All students had the opportunity to rotate around a variety of activities which shared different aspects of Indigenous and Torres Strait Island culture and history. I would like to acknowledge the contribution from NORFORCE and NTSGAC (Northern Territory Stolen Generation and Aboriginal Corporation) for their time and assistance in making this day so relevant to our students. Please see pictures of this day in this newsletter. This afternoon we are holding a reporting parent forum, seeking feedback on our reports to ensure they are meeting our parentsneeds and expectations. If you are unable to attend this afternoon, then I encourage you to send feedback to me directly at [email protected], so that we can capture as many opinions (both good and bad), to inform our reports in Term 4. Another tool we use at Durack School to work with our parents on their childs learning is through 3 Way Conferences. This is where our students LEAD the conversation with both their parent/s and teacher. Through the use of goal setting and identifying what support the student will need from school and home to achieve their goal, we believe this is an authentic opportunity for students to become agents of changeand independent lifelong learners. We are holding 3 Way Conferences from Tuesday 13 th August to Friday 16 th August and using an online booking system. Details on how to book can be found in this newsletter and will also be sent home in a note later this week. During the same week as 3 Way Conferences (12 th August) we also have school photos happening and Science Week activities. School photos information has already gone home and requires online bookings and payments BEFORE the photos are taken, so I encourage you to do this as soon as possible. For Science Week and to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the moon landing, students will be participating in projects related to the moon landing e.g. building rockets, moon rovers and moon base stations. This is then followed by a Questacon show here at school the following week, which notes have already gone home for payment of $5. Our schools annual Perception Survey will be conducted this year from Monday 12 th August to Friday 30 th August 2019. This is an essential opportunity for us to collect as much feedback as possible on a range of areas across the school. We survey parents, students and staff, then use this feedback to plan our improvement journey the following year. special note will go home to all families, as well as on Facebook and Skoolbag when the survey is open. Last year we only had 57 parent responses out of a possible 1000 parents in our school. I am hoping this will increase in 2019. This term I will be focusing on school attendance and contacting families where student’s attendance is below 80% and inviting parents to a meeting to work out a plan of support to increase their child’s attendance. If there are any parents who are struggling to get their child to school every day, then I encourage you to make contact with me, so that we can work out a support plan to assist you. As part of our efforts to support students and ensure consistency for our students across the school, our Wellbeing Committee has been working on the current process for our On Track at Durack Awards. As a result, this term we are changing the expectation for our Early Childhood students and asking that they collect 10 keys to success ‘mini awards’ BEFORE they get an On Track at Durack Award at assembly. They will still need one of each colour, but now must have 10 altogether. This has always been the case for our students from Year 3 and above. Teachers will be working with students in class to ensure they understand the change. One of our current student Vice-Captains has unfortunately moved interstate, therefore we are holding elections for a new male Vice-Captain. This week at assembly we will be hearing our 3 nominee’s election speeches and then classes will vote using the voting cards provided. Good luck Rhys, Jackson and Deacon! Also at assembly this week we have Year 1/2 Way entertaining us. See you at assembly or at our Durack School Board meeting, Thursday 8th August at 5.30pm in the staffroom. Jo Jefferson Principal

Thank you to everyone that participated and

supported Durack School with our NAIDOC

Week activities. It was wonderful seeing

everyone celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander culture. Students enjoyed rock

painting, bark painting, tasting damper with

rosella jam and bush honey and were very

intrigued listening to a Stolen Generation

survivor, retelling her story. We were very

lucky to watch a Torres Strait Islander family

showcase their songs and dances with us and

students got to have a turn at some of their

own moves. Everyone is looking forward to

more NAIDOC week celebrations next year!
