With the help of our amazing Board Members, partners and staff, I'm proud of the way we delivered on our most important promises - safety, and fun with a purpose tied to Summer Brain Gain. 90% of parents surveyed said they would bring their child back or refer a friend, citing convenience of location and past experience with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. As we start the new Club year our Metro Board and Regional Presidents will focus on how BGCGW can build our momentum in serving the youth who need us most. With success comes the obligation to be prepared for a great future. Deepening impact, telling our story with metrics and results, positioning the Clubs to be first choice in a crowded market are each part of our plan. YOU are part of our plan. Our first Annual Giving Campaign is underway - a huge thanks to everyone who has contributed and to all those who will. Pepco and Discovery Education are teaming up with the Boys & Girls Clubs ofGreater Washington to launch the first-ever Pepco STEM Club, designed tosupport Club members in achieving success in the areas of science,technology, engineering and math. The Pepco STEM Club, exclusive locally to the Boys & Girls Clubs of GreaterWashington is part of a successful curriculum designed by DiscoveryEducation. Using a rich combination of hands-on labs, engineering challengesand digital investigations, students grades 5th through 8th will be engaged andexcited about science, technology, engineering and math. Discovery Education is thrilledto partner with Pepco Holdingsas we share their commitmentto supporting studentachievement in thecommunities they serve," saidLori McFarling, CMO ofDiscovery Education. "Withgrowing career opportunities inSTEM, it is important that weinspire the next generation ofinnovators, and provide them with engaging experiences that strengthen theireveryday critical-thinking and problem-solving skills." Since 2013, Pepco and Discovery Education leaders having been workingclosely with the Boys & Girls Clubs to launch the nearly $200,000 program. InAugust, executives and staff members from Pepco and the Boys & GirlsClubs of Greater Washington visited Discovery Headquarters in Silver Spring,Maryland for the inaugural STEM Summit. The day-long, hands-on training andinformation session introduced BGCGW staff to Discovery Education's cuttingedge curriculum and advanced digital learning modules. For example, onceimplemented, the energy and urban infrastructure modules are broken downinto 1-2 hour lessons that will provide afterschool groups with fun and excitingways to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. Pepco Executive and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington BoardChairperson Debbi Jarvis said, "We're excited as a company that we wereable to get this partnership off the ground. Here at Pepco, we're all aboutSTEM- this is something we do." The STEM Club will be a year-round opportunity for students. Jarvis noted,"We know when it comes to afterschool activities and programs, there are alot of choices for kids today but the partnership between Pepco and DiscoveryEducation is exclusive to the Boys & Girls Clubs. Jarvis noted, "We areconfident Pepco's initiative will provide relevant programs for today's students,deepening impact on those Club members who participate." MANASSAS EXPANDS "TECH GIRLS ROCK"

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington-Manassas and CA Technologieshosts Tech Girls Rock, a year-round program to inspire young girls towardsuccessful futures in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts andMathematics (STEAM) industries.

bike is a classic rite of passageand a skill that once learned, isnever forgotten. Whether you're 80or 18, you probably remember thatspecial someone who taught you topedal for the first time.

For the kids and teens at theDunbar-Olympic AlexandriaBranch, that special someone isMike Menchel, also known as "Mr.Mike." Three years ago, Menchelbegan volunteering at theAlexandria Clubhouse, following acareer in Public Relations at theNational Football League and theWashington Speakers Bureau. During his first days at the Club,Menchel noticed several bicycles inthe Club's basement that badlyneeded repairs. He enlisted thehelp of area bike shop owners tospruce up the bikes. ThenMenchel, also a cyclist started aLearn to Ride program that's asafe, easy and effective methodwhere children learn how tobalance, pedal, start, stop andsteer a bike as well as adjust ahelmet for proper fit. Menchel said it did not take long forthe first group of kids to follow hislead, "During the first group bikeride we hosted 17 kids, today wehave as many as 31 bikes."Menchel noted, "It's amazing tosee the children visit RonaldReagan National Airport for the firsttime or experience the journeyacross the Woodrow WilsonBridge."

More than 75 young women ages 9 to 15 participated in the August 7 rockin'summer tech fest. The Manassas Club reports the full-day workshopsconsisted of technology-focused challenges, hands-on projects, paneldiscussions with technology professionals, and introductions to careers ininformation technology.

"Closing the gender gap for theseyoung women is important in today'sever-changing technology world," saidManassas Club DirectorShavonyuette Dotson, "With studiesshowing only 25% of women intechnology-related roles, we mustwork better to educate, expose andencourage more girls to get interestedin information technology fields."

Annual Gala Dinner & Auction Supports ICON Arts Program The Women's Leadership Group (WLG) announced its annual gala dinner andauction, November 17, 2014 supporting BGCGW's ICON performing andvisual arts programs, as well as educational initiatives and scholarships.. 400

The Club's weekly bike ridesalways provide two adults. Oneserves as conductor, while theother is the designated caboose.This format Menchel said, "Allowsthe children to learn proper handsignals, obey traffic laws and howto ride safely in a single file line."In addition to weekly bike trips,members of Boys & Girls ClubAlexandria plan to participate in the2015 George Washington BirthdayParade in Old Town, Alexandria. As we shine the light on Mr. Mikewe honor him as a 2013 recipient ofBGCA's prestigious MaytagDependable Leader Award andthank him for all his support and forintroducing the world of bike ridingto these young kids. Bicyclesrepresent fun, fitness, freedom andfresh air- everything that's goodabout being a kid and a favoritepastime they will never outgrow.

Carr Properties isengaged in a multi-phase project atthe Club, starting from the groundup! Phase one was a new ArtsRoom located on the lower level,most recently Carr refurbished themain hallway leading to the ArtsRoom, gym and multi-purposespace. With new ceiling tiles,
