The Way of the Cross

A Franciscan Mystery Play

Sunday, March 8th 8:00 pm

On March 8th , at 8:00 PM, the Franciscan Mystery Players will present their moving version of “The Way of the Cross” in the church. Written by Franciscan Father Francis Pompei, the Mystery Play is not a “play” in the common sense, but is in fact a prayerful experience that uses special lighting, a stirring soundtrack, pantomime actions and inspirational narration to portray the Stations of the Cross in a manner that invites each viewer to contemplate the meaning of the Passion, and how it relates to their life today. The group is comprised of 12 teens and 8 adult advisors from several parishes in the Paterson Diocese.

Adults and teens are encouraged to attend this special Lenten experience.

We suggest you arrive 10 minutes early.

Stations Of The Cross

Every Friday in Lent

7:00 pm

Mary, Mother of the Church and Her Liturgy

Over the course of the five weeks, I have attempted to systematically present Mary, our Lady, to the parish, not because this parish suffers from any lack of love or devotion for Mary, but to serve as a refresher as to how Mary provides us with the peace and love of her Son through her maternal care for all of God’s people. If one point has been attempted to be made it is that Mary has a very important role in the life of the Church and that it is through the Church that we come to know and love her Son: Jesus Christ. Mary’s maternal care extends to all people of good will who seek to know love (caritas), which takes flesh in Jesus. From this point-of-view, we can say that since Mary is the Mother of the Church, the People of God, she is likewise the mother of the sacred liturgy. “The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the fount from which all her power flows.” (Vatican II, constitution on the sacred liturgy Sacrosanctum concilium 10) In the sacred liturgy, we receive a taste of the celestial banquet which would be incomplete without Mary. Afterall, is not the Eucharist that we receive at Mass the human nature that Mary gave to the Word made flesh? The liturgy is not about man giving praise to man. It is not an enclosed circle of anthropocentric, self-worship focused on making “me feel good about myself”. The sacred liturgy is about our relationship with God and strengthening that relationship by our self-offering, as a united mystical body, to the one God in an act of praise, honor, glory and worship. In offering God our worship, that is adoration, we are spiritually, emotionally, psychically and physically elevated from the fallen way of life caused by sin. Mary, the mother of the liturgy, offers us the perfect model of worship of her Son. Mary worships her own Son day and night with a grateful heart and with a love that only a mother can know. St. Leonard of Port Maurice stated that Mary is present at every Mass with the angels and saints from heaven. (See St. Leonard of Port Maurice, The Hidden Treasures of the Mass, Ch. 3, Part 1) And, even though Mary is our Queen, in her humility she kneels before the presence of her Son in the Eucharist. The sacred liturgy is our experience, par excellence, of heavenly glory. It should be triumphant since it celebrates Christ’s victory over sin and death. The sacred liturgy should be beautiful since it provides us a foretaste of life in heaven. Mary, who leads us to her Son and cares for the whole Church, is always present with us and the entire Communion of Saints at each liturgy. We should never forget this great blessing while at Mass and celebrating the other Sacraments and liturgies of the Church. Mary shows us her son through her Church and her sacred liturgies. Our liturgies always, therefore, have a maternal, Marian dimension.
