Jesus Christ, the King

On December 11, 1925 Pope Pius XI issued an encyclical Quas primas by which he established the Solemnity of Christ the King and taught all concerning Christ’s kingship. Originally, this feast was celebrated on the last Sunday of October, what was known amongst the protestants as “Reformation Sunday”, in order to raise awareness that Christ is the king of both heaven and earth and that worldly rulers, such as Henry VIII and the Lutheran princes, did not have the authority to develop their own Churches, but are subject to Christ’s kingship. The reform of the liturgical calendar by Pope St. Paul VI’s motu proprio Mysterii Paschalis of February 14, 1969 saw the solemnity moved from the end of October to the last Sunday before Advent, thus taking on an eschatological character signifying that Jesus is the King who will usher in the end times and come to establish His kingdom in perfection at the Second Coming. Yet, how is it that Christ is king? A king of heaven and earth? By virtue of the hypostatic union of the divine and human natures present in the singular person of Jesus Christ, true God and true man, the Second Person of the Trinity, Christ obtains his power over all creatures, heavenly and human, angels and mankind. “Therefore, it follows not only that Christ is to be adored as God by angels and men, but also that angels and men obey and are subject to his power as man, namely, that Christ obtains his power over all creatures solely in the name of the hypostatic union. (Pope Pius XI, encyclical letter Quas primas 13: in Denzinger (D), 2194)” Furthermore, Christ is our king by an aquired right merited by our redemption. (See I Peter 1: 18) “Now we are not our own, since Christ has bought us ‘with a great price’ (I Cor. 5: 20); our very bodies ‘are members of Christ’ (I Cor. 6: 15). (op. cit. 13: D, 2194)” Jesus is the king of angels and all heavenly creatures as he is God and he is king of all mankind and all creatures in the universe created by him by virtue of his union with creation, i.e. by virtue of his human nature, and his self-sacrifice for our redemption. The kingship of Christ is expressed by the threefold powers of governance: legislative, judicial and executive. Jesus is the perfect legislator who gives a new and eternal law, perfecting the laws of Moses and the other prophets. “…According to the Catholic faith it must be believed that Jesus Christ was given to men as a Redeemer, in whom to trust; but at the same time as a legislator, to whom to give obedience. But the Gospels do not insist so much on the fact that He established laws, as they do of Him observing laws… (op. cit. 14: D, 2195)” Christ, as king, exercises judicial power: “…that by his own right he confers rewards and punishments upon men while still living. (op. cit.)” And, Christ exercises executive authority since he shepherds and guides us along the way of salvation in accord with his divine Law, directing us to his heavenly kingdom.

The kingdom is not of this world. “For, on more than one given occasion, when the Jews, or rather the apostles themselves were of the opinion through error that the Messiah would deliver the people into liberty and would restore the kingdom of Israel, he himself destroyed and dispelled their vain opinion and hope. . .he declared that his kingdom was not ‘of this world’ (John 18: 36). (op. cit. 15: D, 2195)” While it is certainly right that Jesus could claim power over civil affairs, “He abstained entirely from exercising such dominion; and just as He once belittled the possession and desire of human things, so He then permitted and today permits the possession of them. (op. cit. 17: D, 2195)” Lastly, Christ’s power is not over Catholics or even Christians alone, but over all humanity. “Clearly, his power is not only over Catholic peoples, or over those alone who, cleansed by holy baptism, surely belong to the Church. . .but it embraces. . . that in all truth all mankind is under the power of Jesus Christ. (Pope Leo XIII, encyclical letter Annum sacrum (May 25, 1899) 3: ASS 31 (1898-1899), 647)” Christ’s kingship is a real kingship over us all and teaches us that if we are under his sway, then we can live in the sure hope of receiving his salvation.
