Dear Parishioners, I recently saw a you tube video on gratitude that was very insightful. The premise is that often we fail to have appreciation for our blessings because of our attitude, rather than the

blessings themselves. We bring our perspectives and impose them on what is outside of ourselves. For example, if we do not like a certain food we might say, “that food tastes terrible,” when the truth is many people find the food quite delicious. We find the food unappetizing because of our particular attitudes. It is not the food itself. This can also be true about what we enjoy. I may value time with a good friend who I haven’t seen in a while quite differently than time with that same individual if we are in regular contact. All of this is true of our awareness of our blessings. I am blessed to have use of my arms but when I broke my wrist on a ski trip I developed a deeper respect for that which I had taken for granted. Perhaps during this time of limits we might reflect on the blessings we have so often taken for granted. For myself, I took for granted that my family would be physically close. I took for granted that I could go out for a good breakfast or dine with friends. I took my health for granted. What are the blessings and graces you more deeply appreciate because of this enforced isolation? It is my prayer that during this Eucharistic fast we will more deeply appreciate Christ’s presence in the Liturgy we pray and the Communion we share. Here in Chicago we are actually spoiled because of the proximity to parishes and the numbers of priests. In many parts of the world our brothers and sisters could only celebrate Mass a few times a year. Weekly Mass is a luxury and daily Mass is non-existent. This is not only true in other parts of the world. 15% of the Catholic parishes in the United States do not have a resident pastor. A priest classmate of mine is pastor of 4 parishes and he gets to each only once a week. All of us long to be together at Mass. This is our deepest hunger as Catholics. I pray daily that it is very soon. But during these days apart appreciate the reality that we will be together soon. That will not be the truth of many Catholics even as we reopen. The Family Ministry at Our Lady of the Woods has developed a video, with the assistance of Spirit Juice, in which our parishioners reflect on their blessings. This will be on the website this week. Please watch it. We will learn from each other. In Christ,

Father Mike
