Dear Parishioners,

More milestones… OK, fine, this one is mostly about me. It was nice celebrating my 25th (not that I’m feeling old or anything) at the same time we opened OLSH’s 100th (made me feel less old ). Now in the midst of the Parish 100th, which is going very well by the way—see you in January at “Bible Bingo”—I came to another milestone. I was ordained May 15, 1993, just a few days short of being 25 years, 7 months old. So by the time I would be 51 years and 2 months plus a little bit, I’d have been a priest for longer than I wasn’t. So by those calculations, as of today, December 16, 2019, I have now been a priest for most of my life. Kinda awesome. And while it’s a source of reflection and hopefully re-commitment for me, it’s also a time of gratitude, especially to you. I’ve spent over 10 years of that priesthood with you in some way; living here for so long while ministering at Lansdale Catholic, and now almost three years as your pastor. It hasn’t always been the funest—we’ve faced some difficult decisions together within the Parish and some difficult times in our Church and country—but it has been a rewarding time for me and I thank you for your support and welcome. You opened your arms to me back in 2008 as you’ve done for so many years of residents here at OLSH. It can be different being a resident and for me it was the first and only time I’ve been in that position. You’re a priest but you’re not directly responsible for what goes on where you live but you’re still drawn to the people and you want to be there for them but without stepping on any toes. You made it easy to make that transition and your welcome and kindness made things a lot easier for me in my ministry at LC and especially when things didn’t work out for me with the Navy as I’d hoped. Your support and enthusiasm made me want to be your pastor (so if you don’t like it, you only have your fantastic selves to blame ) So I guess this is about you too—how wonderful a community you are. Remember that when the crowds descend for the Christmas Eve vigil Masses, especially the early ones. Make them want to be more a part of this community, this family, like you did for me. God bless. Fr. Schiele

Parish 100th Fun Fact

After more than a half century of service, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus left the Parish at the end of the school year in 1979. The following year brought the consolidation of St. Agnes School with our School, and the arrival of four Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to supervise. The Sisters resided in the convent at St. Maria Goretti Parish in Hatfield.

THE CRÉCHE

Long ago, people did not celebrate Christmas as we do now. They had never seen a Christmas tree, had never sung a Christmas carol, and they probably did not give or receive presents. But Francis believed that Jesus’ birthday should be made special. He wanted everyone to sing songs at Christmas and to give extra food to their animals. He asked people to scatter grain along the roads so the birds he loved so much could join the Christmas feast. One winter night in the year 1223, Brother Francis and one of his followers were making their way to the tiny town of Greccio, to spend Christmas there. Francis was not an old man, but he had been very ill, and he walked slowly. As his feet followed the familiar road, Francis looked out over the fields and saw some shepherds sleeping in the moonlight. They reminded him of the shepherds long ago to whom the angel had appeared, telling them to go and greet the Christ Child, born that day in a stable in Bethlehem. Francis had seen the shepherds, and now he longed to see the rest of the Christmas story with his own eyes. More than that, he wanted to share it with others. So Francis planned a surprise for the people of the town. He needed a wooden feeding trough, a load of hay, a few animals, and some people to dress in costumes. As always, there were many who wanted to help Brother Francis. By Christmas Eve, word had spread that something wonderful was going to happen on a wooded hill outside the town, and people came from all around. The light from their torches flickered through the trees as they climbed the hillside paths. Their excited voices echoed through the woods. When they arrived at the spot Francis had chosen, a shout of joy went up from the crowd. Never had the poor farmers of Greccio imagined that they would look upon the holy scene they had heard about since childhood. There was the infant Jesus, lying in a manger, with Mary and Joseph watching over him, and a donkey and an ox standing near. In the voice they knew so well, Francis read to the people from the Bible. He told how Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger because there was no room at the inn. Lovingly, Francis lifted the baby in his arms. He urged the people to put aside their quarrels and treat each other with kindness, as Jesus wanted them to. Then he called the children forward and asked them to sing to the Christ Child. Their lullaby to Jesus may have been the world’s first Christmas carol. Not long after that Christmas Eve on the hillside, Brother Francis died. But the people never forgot the beautiful nativity scene he had made for them. Year after year, they recreated it in the same place.

Soon other towns took up the custom as well. In time, Brother Francis’ idea spread all over the world. Now, wherever you go at Christmas time, you may see the figures of Mary, Joseph, and the others watching over baby Jesus in the stable.

This was Saint Francis’ gift to us - the crèche, a symbol of hope, peace, and joy.
