My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T B ’ A A P C W

“H I , L ”

Saint Katharine Drexel is the founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Her dad was a mul -millionaire banker. Katharine could have had anything money can buy, but she understood that the most beau ful things in life can’t be purchased or sold. True treasure and wisdom is found in the person of Jesus Christ. She believed that her faith in the Lord Jesus called her to selfless service of others. Once he came in human flesh. Now he comes in the humble form of bread. Once Katharine received Jesus in Communion she knew she must give of what she had for the good of others. She a ained the fulfillment of her greatest gi – we might call it peace at the center. She started spending me in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and to care for the poor and suffering.

In her late teens, Katharine became a secular Franciscan, embracing voluntary poverty. When she was twenty-one, her adopted mother died and two years later her dad, leaving an inheritance es mated at twenty million dollars. That was 1881 - a dollar then was equivalent to about eighteen dollars today. Katharine, however, con nued to live her personal vow of poverty. With prudence and good Stewardship, she gave away the en re fortune. She had a special concern for Black and Na ve Americans, eventually founding a religious order dedicated to their spiritual and material needs.

Katharine Drexel teaches us an important lesson: all of us have gi s that can be used for the glory of God and to care for one another. In the midst of our daily struggles, Katharine Drexel helps us to realize that while the greatest gi s are not financial, we s ll need to use those assets well and that we must always depend on the providence of God for our needs. When we give of our means for the good of others we are always rewarded by the Lord somehow. This year we are once again called upon to support the important ministries supported by the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

The people of our parish are very generous and I thank you for your con nued generous support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We have been able to meet and surpass our Appeal goal because you give above and beyond the call of duty me and me again. One of the beau ful things about being a priest is that you see so many otherwise hidden acts of grace. So o en, I see your goodness and the care that you provide to those who need our love and compassion most. Your support of the Appeal helps to bring Christ’s love to those who need us to be his presence in the world. Your generosity is an act of grace that helps to hold our society together. God's grace - expressed in hidden acts of kindness is what holds everything together and helps us to do the Lord’s work on earth.

Last weekend was Pledge Commitment Weekend for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal which included a recorded homily from Bishop Serratelli. Thank you for your great generosity in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Three weeks ago we heard Mr. Chris Brancato of the Department of Persons with Disabili es speak and tell us of some of the good work that the Appeal supports through the work of Catholic Chari es. Mr. Brancato demonstrated for us that so many rely upon our support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal in order to have a home and to receive the care that they need. Without our love and support they would be alone.

Our local church has begun the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this year our challenge is to remember that all of us are called to respond to the Lord’s invita on to service with the response, “Here I am, Lord.” We are all challenged to reach out in Christ’s name to extend His love to all. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal serves the ministry of our Catholic Chari es Agencies, that includes transporta on for the disabled, family counseling, and emergency food bank, AIDS ministry, and substance abuse counseling, just to name a few. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal serves to educate seminarians – the priests of the future and helps to care for priests who are re red and infirm. Addi onally the Bishop’s Annual Appeal also serves to provide a rebate to parishes so that we are able to con nue our work here. You are called upon to respond to so many needs so very o en. As I ask for your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal that many of you have received informa on about in the mail, I ask you to please be open to helping our parish to meet our responsibility to fulfill our goal, to be open to the Appeal in the weeks ahead, and remember that it is through your goodness that so many come to know the saving power of God’s merciful love.

Last weekend we had an opportunity to make a pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and to support the many vital ministries of our local church. You can make this year’s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to help will be a great blessing. Thank you for helping our parish to fulfill our responsibili es to the Diocese of Paterson. Please consider making a contribu on to the Appeal if you have not done so already.

God challenges us all to be instruments of his mercy and compassion for others. Each day we have the gi of sharing in God’s life and sharing that life with others. As members of the Body of Christ we all have the gi of sharing God’s life with others.

I have always thought this appeal was misnamed “the Bishop’s Appeal” because it does not have much to do with the Bishop. No disrespect intended, the Bishop is our shepherd, but the idea of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal belongs to another era when all ministries were seen as concentrated in bishops, priests, and deacons. This Appeal gives all of us the grace of

par cipa ng in God’s work and in caring – directly – for the poor and the marginalized.

Addi onally, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal very directly assists our parish, the Catholic Church in miniature, and a living reality for all of us, through a rebate that is a great help to our work and ministry here.

God’s love makes us free to love others with generosity – and leaves us open to taking the risk of offering our compassion and love to others even when we are not certain that there will be a return. That is the real beauty of love – taking the chance that your love, your investment of your heart, can help someone else appreciate the beauty and the security of God’s love.

Amid so much bad news, turbulence and uncertainty in our world, we are given the precious gi of being a sign of hope to those facing the tempta on to despair. Perseverance in faith, hope and love requires the support and encouragement of one another. Bringing God's mercy to the suffering, perplexed, those in difficulty and in all sorts of troubles can be a heavy responsibility but cares are made lighter when many seek to carry them at once.

To thank God for his never failing love we are invited to treat others as He treats us: with compassion, mercy, and love. That is what it means to be an ac ve and wise member of the household of faith.

I thank all of you who have given to the Appeal in past years or who have responded to a recent mailing from Bishop Serratelli. Your support of the Appeal helps the lives of so many who depend upon our generosity. Already, our parish is doing very well in mee ng our goal because of your great and selfless generosity.

One of the main works that the Bishop’s Annual Appeal contributes to is Catholic Chari es which operates worthy and vital programs in the city of Paterson like the Father English Center that is so well known to our parish. But Catholic Chari es of the Diocese of Paterson does a lot of other good work as well: Day care and extended day care, transporta on services for the disabled, family counseling, and emergency food bank, Adult day care, AIDS ministry, Group homes for adults with disabili es, A er school and summer programs, Runaway shelter, Clothing pantries, Substance abuse counseling, and Home repairs for seniors. Our contribu ons to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal go directly to these important works of Chris an Charity.

The pledges made to the Appeal are needed to fund the day-to-day opera ons of our Catholic Chari es agencies and many other vital ministries of the Diocese of Paterson.

T B ’ A A :

• O C C The largest percentage of Appeal funds support our diocesan Catholic Chari es with dona ons to these programs and services:

•S S With the help of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal last year, much was done to support Catholic schools in the inner-city area, including capital improvements such as roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, interior ligh ng and exterior doors. The Appeal also helped fund financial aid to assist families to afford Catholic school educa on, technology upgrades to enhance the academic programs offered in the schools and support of school ac vi es such as music, art and sports that give a well-rounded educa onal experience.

• S E D P ’ R R The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to

96 cents of every dollar raised is applied to the Appeal needs as outlined above. The 4 cent balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.

T -N S O T “T I , ”

In the gospel proclaimed for this Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the apostles James and John speak in a way that we can readily iden fy with: “we want you to grant our request” (Mark 10:35). Jesus seems ready to seriously entertain this request but he asks them another ques on first: “What is it?” (10:36). The apostles have the opportunity for Jesus to grant their request but the apostles make a wrong turn: “See to it that we sit, one at your right and the other at your le , when you come into your glory” (10:37). Jesus tells the apostles that they really don’t know what they are asking; in order to be seated in a place of such high honor, the apostles must be first willing to accept the same suffering that the Lord himself bears. The Lord Jesus explains to the apostles that it is not important where one sits in the Kingdom of God. What is important is that all the followers of the Lord live in imita on of his selfless love and in faithfulness to the will of his Heavenly Father. When we come to the Lord in prayer we usually have long lists of things that we need and that is as it should be. The Lord encourages us always to come to him with our needs so that he can be our rock of refuge and source of peace. But in the midst of our prayer we should not lose sight of the importance for always praying for the strength to do what God asks us to do and that we have the grace of understanding what his will is for us. Like the first disciples of the Lord, our inten ons are usually good, but we get distracted and weighed down by other concerns; our vision becomes cloudy so that we don’t even know what to ask the Lord for at mes. When we pray for the grace to be his faithful disciples we will always end up at the place the Lord intends for us; whether that is at his right or le , who knows? As long as we are in the presence of the Lord Jesus all of the seats are good and especially reserved for us as individuals loved by him.

Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin soon that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter. November is the month of the faithful departed. Each year the names of our deceased loved ones are placed in a Book of Remembrance and kept in church during the month of November so that they are remembered in prayer. If you would like to remember your departed loved ones during the month of November please use the envelopes found at the doors of the church in order to do so. The envelopes may be returned to the collec on basket or the parish offices by October 28, 2018. Please make sure to clearly inscribe the names of your departed loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be entered in our Book of Remembrance. A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated for all of those who have died in the past year on November 2, 2018 at 7:30 in the evening.

Parishioners very o en seek for ways to memorialize departed loved ones. Memorial opportuni es are made very infrequently because I think it is important that whatever is dedicated to the sacred memory of a departed loved one will last for many, many years. The work on our parking lot is proceeding thanks to your generosity and what has been completed looks marvelous and contributes greatly to the safety and appearance of our project. Being at the corner of a busy highway, Route 23, there is not too much green around our parish. Since so much work has been done, we will con nue improvements by plan ng four dogwood trees in the island immediately adjacent to the church. If you would like to memorialize a loved one through one of these trees that will grow year a er year and be a sign of God’s life among us, this may be done for $1,500, and may be paid on three payments of $500.00. A small plaque will be installed near each tree in memory of your departed loved one.

In the monthly packet of envelopes you will find an envelope to help to defray the cost of our diocesan assessment. Our assessment is $100,000. On the third Sunday of each month we will take a special collec on to help to defray our support for our local church of Paterson.

The inten ons will be placed in a Book of Inten ons for Saint Jude’s Intercession and be placed at the shrine in his honor in the ves bule of our church where it will remain un l November 27th. Please place the inten on envelope in the collec on basket or return it to the parish office by October 26th. Saint Jude, Pray for us.
