My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T S S O T “B L G ”

We are back to Ordinary Time. The Christmas Season is over now and we begin that period before Lent. Having prepared for the coming of the Savior in Advent and rejoiced in the great feast of the Incarna on at Christmas we now reflect upon what it means to be a follower of the Lord Jesus every day. All me is sacred me because it belongs to God and during this period before Lent we are challenged to understand how the mystery of God’s presence unfolds for us in the me that God gives to us. In today’s gospel we meet a person who was very central in Advent, Saint John the Bap st; the Bap st always points a en on away from himself and toward Christ. Standing with two of his disciples, John the Bap st sees Jesus pass by and immediately he points out Jesus and explains who he is to his disciples: “Behold the Lamb of God” (John 1:36). John has the privilege of leading others to the Christ and does not seek to hold the a en on of his own disciples for himself: “The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus” (1:37). Jesus sees these two disciples of John following him and invites them on a journey of faith and discovery, and he goes right to the heart of the ma er and asks the disciples: “What are you looking for?” (1:37). When the disciples ask where Jesus is staying he invites them to begin the path of walking with him: “Come, and you will see” (1:39). Andrew, one of John’s disciples who followed Jesus goes to find his own brother Simon and tells him, “We have found the Messiah” (1:41). It will be Simon who becomes Peter and the rock upon which Christ will build his Church. Our bap smal voca on calls us to announce Christ’s presence to others and to draw them to him. Each of us has a par cular voca on given to us by God and we grow in deeper understanding of that voca on through the me that we spend with Christ himself and the me we share as members of our community of faith, the Church. In speaking of this gospel passage, Benedict XVI reflected:

From the page of today's Gospel, we can take these two words and find a fundamental instruc on in them for the New Year: we would like it to be a me when we renew our spiritual journey with Jesus, in the joy of ceaselessly looking for and finding him. Indeed, the purest joy lies in the rela onship with him, encountered, followed, known and loved, thanks to a constant effort of mind and heart. To be a disciple of Christ: for a Chris an this suffices. Friendship with the Teacher guarantees profound peace and serenity to the soul even in the dark

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

moments and in the most arduous trials. When faith meets with dark nights, in which the presence of God is no longer ‘felt’ or ‘seen,’ friendship with Jesus guarantees that in reality nothing can ever separate us from his love (cf. Rom 8:39). At the beginning of this New Year we pray for the grace to keep our hearts and ears

open to the call of the Lord Jesus so that we can be his good and faithful disciples. The me that we spend with the Lord always leads to peace. The call of the Lord will not always promise that our journey is easy or our path smooth but it does assure that we are par cipa ng with the Lord Jesus by making his presence known in the world so that others find the salva on and the peace that he offers as his gi to us. As we enter the liturgical season of Ordinary Time we keep in mind that God is always offering the gi of friendship, communion with him, and that we grow in apprecia on for the mysteries of our faith each day.

T Thank you once again for your great generosity in our Christmas collec on which was almost exactly the same as last year’s Christmas collec on, and three thousand dollars over what had been budgeted. Thanks, too, for your great generosity in suppor ng our Christmas flower memorials and our Calendar Raffle, both of which almost met last year’s figures and also exceeded what we had budgeted. Thank you!

T Thank you for your warm farewell to Father Giovanni. I know that he was very moved by the experience and apprecia ve of your generosity and prayers. Please con nue to pray for Father Giovanni as he takes up his new responsibility as Administrator of Saint Clement, Pope and Martyr Parish, Rockaway Township.

Christmas Day 2019

This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Paterson will have Confession available every Monday evening from 7:00-8:30 PM. If you have been reluctant to come to the Sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon Confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with Christ and His Church. Don’t be afraid! Information will be provided. Ask the priest to help you. Experience the gracious mercy of God!

GIFT CARD SCAM Please be alert to these thieves. A number of priests throughout the country have found that their parishioners are receiving emails or text messages claiming to be from their pastor, and asking parishioners to purchase gift cards to help the poor. This is a fraud. Please do not respond to any appeal you receive which asks you to purchase gift cards to help the poor and uses the name of the parish or diocese.

Christmas Gifts of Hope Thank You Straight & Narrow (red candle tags)

Dear Our Lady of the Holy Angels,

On behalf of Straight & Narrow, I would like to thank you for your participation and your generous donation to our 2019 Christmas Angel Project.

The collective contributions from the parishioners of Holy Angels, and the individual thoughtfulness from each of your membership, have made it possible for us to continue to help the men and women currently participating in our residential programs.

Your participation in our gift giving project has supported our continued progress and has helped our organization meet some of the basic needs of our clients.

Thank you again for your participation, and we hope for your continued support in our future endeavors.

Sincerely and God bless, Robert E. Bozzomo Pastoral Care

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Santa hat tags)

Dear Holy Angels,

I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year has begun on a high note! On behalf of the children and families of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, I want to thank you for providing us with so many great toys! Because of your great generosity, we were able to distribute over 600 toys to the children of Paterson. And what a fantastic opportunity to evangelize, as our children brought along with them their friends from the neighborhood.

Fraternally in Christ, Msgr. Geno Sylva Rector
