Archbishop says every Christian has a vocation to follow Christ 2

Anniversary celebration for Fr. Chris Troxell – See Back Page Get ready for the celebration of Father Chris’ 25th anniversary of ordination next Saturday, June 17, at the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Reserve your place at the reception ($5) at the parish office or on the patio.

I ordained seven fine men to the priesthood on June 3, and this weekend, I ordained 19 fine men to be permanent deacons. I thank God every day that we continue to be blessed with vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and religious life. We have nearly 90 seminarians now studying at St. John’s Seminary and Juan Diego House. We are continuing the long and patient work of building a culture of vocations among the family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The real key to the priestly vocations question – and to every other question in the Church – is to inspire a renewal of Christian life. Everything in the Church becomes clear when we understand the beautiful demands of Christian living, when we know what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is one who has met Jesus Christ and has answered his call to go with him and to follow the path for life that he sets before us.

Every Christian, by definition, has a vocation – because every Christian has heard and answered that call of Jesus Christ, “Follow me.” Vocation, as we know, simply means “calling.” But, unfortunately, “vocation” has become one of those “Church words” like “holiness” and “saint” that has lost its force of meaning in our times. Nowadays, many think these words refer only to special people, to a chosen few. We think only special people can be holy or be saints. And we think of a vocation as something reserved only for “special people” – those select men and women whom God calls to the priesthood or consecrated life.

Every soul is called by God. You and I would not be here unless God called us into existence. “The Lord called me from the womb,” the prophet Isaiah said. God calls us into being from his very heart. He calls us into being because he has a part that he wants us to play in his plan to redeem the world. And he in-vites us to answer his call with our whole heart, our whole life.

We need to cultivate this vocational awareness in our young people. In our homes, parishes and schools, we need to teach our young people that the Christian life is an exciting adventure – that God has a path for every life that is per-sonal, that no one else can walk. We need to encourage young men and women to seek God and to pray to know his will for their lives. Pope Francis says that young people should be praying every day, just a simple prayer: “Lord, what do you want me to do? What path am I to follow?” [Let us] teach our young people to trust in God’s plan – not to be afraid to make commitments…. God needs every one of us! This is what we need to proclaim in the Church.

God calls men and women to the vocation of marriage and family life in order to show the world the beauty of love and the dignity of human life. He calls men and women to all the various vocations that serve to build up our hu-man society and culture – in business and education, government and community service. God wants good Christians in all walks of life. He calls men and women to consecrate themselves to poverty, chastity and obedience, to lives of prayer and service to those in need. He calls men to the ministry of service in the diaconate. And, finally, God calls and chooses men to be his priests – to conform their lives more closely to the image of Jesus and to share in a deeper, more intimate participation in Christ’s own priesthood and mission.

This is important. Jesus does not just call us to follow and then leave us alone. He goes with us and he will stay close to us and support us along every step of our journey. So we need to have that confidence – and we need to share that confidence with young people. We should never be afraid to give ourselves completely to Jesus. He will always give us the grace we need to follow him, to carry out whatever vocation he is calling us to.

Let us pray for our new priests! Again, I would like to recommend that we pray every day the simple prayer that I prayed in my youth: Lord, we ask you to grant us vocations. Grant us many vocations. Grant us many and holy voca-tions! And may our Blessed Mother Mary give us hope and guide us.

June 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. in church. It is presented by Dr. Terri Escalante, author of a guide to Fr. Praying to Mary before Mass “Pray for us…” Three powerful words among the 42 within the prayer we

know as the Hail Mary. We Catholics are invited to pray these words every day for ourselves and the needs of the world. And, I think we’d agree, that world is in need of a LOT of prayer! Wars, violence, anger, division, hunger, poverty, dis-trust, fear, all sorts of anxiety, hate, and confusion abound on this shrinking plan-et. We live in a world full of evil forces, but, we are not alone in our suffering.

Mary, Mother of God and Queen of the Heavens, stands with us ready to take our needs to her Son if only we ask. The Rosary is that ongoing prayer, of-fered around the world in every language, calling on her precious and powerful intercession.

When we enter into Ordinary Time June 25, our OLA family will return to our practice of uniting our voices in a decade of the Rosary before each weekend Mass. It is not part of the liturgy – the Mass is full and complete without it. But it is an opportunity for each of us to join our voices with millions of our brothers and sisters around the world as we call upon Mary to take the concerns of our hearts to the ear of the Savior of the World.

In addition to calling on Mary’s intercession and protection, these moments can be time for uniting our hearts to the heart of Christ as we prepare to join with the Universal Church in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Will you please join me, right now, in calling on Mary to pray for us and for the whole world?

Hunger for Change study

This study module from JustFaith explores the realities of food insecurity in the United States and around the world. It was created in partnership with Bread for the World to inspire faith-filled action.

Parishioners are invited to sign-up on the patio after Masses Sunday, June 18. The module of eight sessions begins in July. For more information, contact Deacon Jim Allgaier at (909) 626-3596, ext. 216.

In this program , a prayerful process is created that includes the study of Scripture, dialogue, and an “immersion” experience with people who live in marginalized communities. The group will also engage in spiritual practices that illuminate the reality of food security. Finally, the group will vision action steps to ad-dress the root causes of hunger.

FAQ’s about upcoming parish survey... What is the purpose of this survey?

The Member Engagement Survey will give us a collective view of the spiritual health of our parish. The data will show us where we are doing well and help us see the areas that need our attention to make us a stronger parish.

What does the survey entail?

The survey features 25 items carefully chosen to measure engagement and spiritual commitment that are essential to spiritual health. The survey will only take approximately five minutes to complete.

Who should complete the survey?

We are asking all parish members aged 18 and older to complete the survey. In addition, any person who considers him or herself part of our par-ish, regardless of whether he or she is a member, is invited to respond to the survey.

Where do I complete the survey?

You can complete the survey online using the link found on our website or on paper in the parish beginning June 17-18.

What about confidentiality?

Are responses are confidential. We are working with Gallup to conduct this survey. Gallup is a member of the Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO) and, as such, abides by specific rules of conduct that include adherence to strict confidentiality in survey administration and report-ing of results. Gallup will not reveal any individual responses to anyone.

How will the survey results be used?

The leadership team will receive the compiled results from Gallup and use them to gain additional insight into how parishioners feel about our parish. We will use the results to identify specific actions we can take to further meet the spiritual needs at OLA. The results will be shared with you and incorporated into a new Parish Mission Statement and new Strategic Pastoral Plan.

Thank you, in advance, for your participation in the survey. If you have additional questions, please contact Deacon Jim Allgaier at (909) 626-3596, ext. 4216.

Fr. Chris: Story of a vocation The vocation of Fr. Chris Troxell grew out of an extraordi-

nary family that is well-known at OLA. Twin brother Cameron humorously says, “We have our pro’s and con’s – I am the pro-fessor and he’s the confessor.” Both his mother, Clare, and his sister, Keira, have worked in the rectory and parish office, while Cameron leads the music ensemble for the 11 a.m. Mass.

Fr. Chris celebrates his 25th anniversary of ordination at OLA on June 17 at the 5:30 p.m. Mass with a reception follow-ing. After ordination June 13, 1992, by Cardinal Roger Mahony, he celebrated his first Mass at OLA with Msgr. William J. Barry.

He has gravitated toward Spanish-speaking ministry, both here and at St. Hilary in Pico Rivera, St. Genevieve in Panorama City, All Souls in Alhambra, Our Lady of the Rosary in Para-mount, and Immaculate Conception in Monrovia (where he served with Fr. Charles). Fluent in Spanish, Fr. Chris was a Latin American Studies major in college and has made 20 trips to Mexico. He has been a guiding force at OLA for our Hispanic Community and Knights of Columbus, as well as the Marriage Preparation Ministry.

A gifted scholar, athlete, musician and thespian, Fr. Chris found his way into ministry through playing in a band for charis-matic groups and working at the St. Francis soup kitchen in San-ta Cruz as a young man serving the Spanish-speaking. He was inspired to enter the seminary in this Archdiocese by Cardinal Mahony’s commitment to the Hispanic Community.

Read more of his story in the program for the anniversary.
